Hello all!!!
This is my first Thread! I really want to know where do all my fellow nursing students can really focus and study at? I am having a hard time finding somewhere to study to where i can really focus. So far the school library seems to do it, but i can't always go as much as i need to study, nor do i have the gas to make extra trips during the week. Soo Where do you study????
:stdnrsrck:
I study just about anywhere. It is just WHAT i study varies based on where I am and the nature of my surroundings. Study in school cafeteria/student lounge/library, at home either at the dining room table or in my room, in the lobby of the boys and girls club while son is activities, in the parents/observation room at sons taekwando school, sitting in the bleachers at sons baseball practice.
Really most of my studying gets done in little bits in pieces during sons activities. May be caotic, but an MP3 player is my best friend. Earbud headphones that come with different size rubber pieces are the best. They work like earplugs and block out a lot of external noise, even without music on. Sometimes ill put them in and not even put on music....the blocking out a good portion of noise and the fact that if someone sees you doing something with headphones in they arent too likely to bother you is sometimes all i need....I know all too often if i dont put headphones in, and am studying somewhere I end up having people asking about what I'm studying/reading and want to carry a convo, which is nice, but kills my studying time. If noise is too distracting or i feel like listening to music then I will usually put on classical music.
In depth reading is one thing I do need quiet with no distractions for, so usually do that at home when no one is home, or when I can hide in my room for long enough to get a good chunk of material covered. I prioritize full readings as first thing to be done when I have quiet time at home, because that is the only thing that I have to have quite for.
I always come to school about 3hrs early to school to study. We have a little lunch/break room that I love to study in because nobody is in there at 6:30 in the morning. I do most of my hw there. At home I just can't get focused. I also go to a classmate's house to study when we can. We each make the other study because if we didn't meet up we wouldn't even open our books. I also do a lot of reading in my car. On long car trips I get my boyfriend to read me my text book. It's really funny hearing him try to pronounce the med terms. LOL.
For me I get the best study time early in the morning before everyone gets up. My brain is rested and coffee is available. No it isn't easy to crawl out of bed on a cold dark morning but I have four children and it's a circus when everyone is awake. I also have something with me at all times...notecards, study notes, practice questions, or a textbook and I snatch every possible minute. When I'm waiting at the doctors office, in the school pickup line, while waiting for the school concert to start....whenever and wherever.
I so identify with you all on the issues with studying at home. I always feel like there's something at home that needs my attention. I don't like to be separated from everything but i can most effectively studying on my bed. lol wierd but it works, but my back doesn't always agree. But i like the idea of going to the library and studying on saturday for 7hrs. That would seem so productive and i could manage to do that once a week and studying when i can at school, work an home. In the coffee shops and bookstore (barnes and nobles, etc) does the people coming and going and talking distract you? Or do you pop in earplugs and slip into the world of Nursing?
like i said, i really do get distracted sometimes. but if i go earlier in the day, its a lot more quiet. in the late afternoon, the b&n and borders i go to is FULL of teens because both stores are in the mall area.
borders is a little better for me, i can usually find a nice quiet spot. the parking is awful though lol.
an ipod might help but in some cases distracts me more. ear plugs are the way to go!!!!!!
In my room or the campus library.
I really get in the zone in the library though. I especially love hooking up with friends and renting out one of the study rooms our library offers for a few hours.
I really have no idea how people are able to study at coffee shops or places like Barnes and Noble! Too much hustle and bustle for my liking.

I have two small children so I go to my bedroom in the evenings when my husband is home. I also leave early for class so that I can get an hour of two of quiet study time in the library. I am really lucky, my husband rearranged our bedroom and put a desk in there so that I could concentrate. When my husband isn't home to help me with the kids, I study in the kitchen and take lots of breaks to play with my kids. I also make millions of flash cards to study on the go... like in the car (when someone else is driving lol) or when I am waiting for class to start. I have all of the main points from my lecture notes written on flashcards in an outline format and just look at those when I am not actively studying.
