Thanks everyone! I appreciate all the good advice. Emergent, this is a new school in the district so I'm not replacing someone who left. I think I'll go ahead and try it. There are a lot of schools in the district so she probably won't be able to spend too much time with me.

I've been offered a school nurse job starting next school year. I met the head nurse over the whole district recently at an event and boy-oh-boy is she a crabby lady. She was so unhappy about everything going on that day. Little things like she was going to complain to the people in charge because we had to wait a few minutes for something. She was just so put out by everything. Now I'm wondering if I want the job or not if I'll have to work with this lady a lot. How much contact do you have with your head nurse over the district? I didn't interview with her for this job - that was with the principal. Anyone else have to deal with someone who seems to go looking for problems and things to complain about? She really seems to enjoy complaining! ??
  3. I guess I'm the oddball. My school is not like that at all. I was expecting it to be, though. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that we are all treated with a very high level of respect. Sure, there is a lot of work, a lot of stuff to do, a lot of studying, but we all expect that. I was surprised after our first exam and many people didn't pass, the instructor said that she'd have to do something differently to prepare us better for the next test. She knows we all are very smart, have very high gpa's (or we wouldn't be there) and want to do well, know how to study, work hard. I was thinking that it's almost like they are acting towards us as nurses towards their patients, in a way. Not at all spoon feeding us but like we all have this goal and it is their job to to help us achieve that goal in a respectful, caring manner. One of my instructors told our clinical group the other day that he and the other instructors have the privilege of teaching us and helping us to succeed. Don't get me wrong, it has been crazy with all the reading and studying I've been doing! And my school is in the top 5 in my state for NCLEX pass rate. It's just that the instructors have a great amount of respect for us at all times. Anyway, I've been pleasantly surprised. Hope your experience gets better!
  4. It all depends on where you live. I'm in the S. East and if you are an RN here you can pretty much choose where and when you work. The "nursing shortage" is alive and well here which makes it easy to choose your shift!
  5. I've had that schedule too! Crazy! What is perplexing me this semester (first semester of nursing school) is that I'm in lab from 8-2 one day per week and get one (1!) credit for it!? And I am in another class called "nursing applications" for well over two hours per week and it is a one hour credit. I just don't get it...

In my area, an ADN RN will be easily hired and is qualified for management positions. In my town, we have one CC and one university. The graduates from the CC are in demand over the university students for some reason....? The hospitals don't care about whether you have a BSN or an ADN, but they do care about where you went to school... in this case CC takes priority over university. Students are lining up to get into the ADN program and the university is looking for applicants. I'm glad I'm in the CC program!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :)
  7. I agree with MN-Nurse. You may hear that 75 or whatever is passing and will get you out of the class, but you need to work for all A's to have a good shot at getting accepted into a nursing program. Seriously..."Do whatever you have to do to get A's in every course"
  8. I'm 44 and got accepted to start in January. I'm nervous too, but I did well in prereqs so I'm confident!! You'll do great!! :)
  9. No one, nurses included, likes cleaning up poop. But fortunately lots of people, you included, can get used to it so it doesn't seem so bad. We all (even nurses) are opposed to things like poop because that is how we naturally keep ourselves safe. If you didn't think that poop was gross, something would be wrong. I think you would be a great nurse. Don't be afraid...go for it!
  10. I took College Algebra in an online 8-week course last year. That thing was hard! I worked by tail off and ended up with a B. I know I would have done better had I been in a classroom with a teacher explaining everything and moving slower. That calculator was very hard to learn how to use without a teacher right there face to face. I had to use all kinds of other resources (google, school math lab, my brother who teaches math, etc) to get through it. I don't want to discourage you, and like I said, I made a B, but I don't struggle in math and it was tough. But I also always shoot for A's and just couldn't do it in that class and I know it is because it was online. Just my 2 cents.
  11. I was a stay at home mom for 16 years (still am) and went back to school one year ago. I was scared! But I have totally rocked! My GPA is 3.85. Just decide to succeed and you will!
  12. A&P 2 Final tomorrow. Start Micro in a few weeks (fall). That's it for me. Nothing left to take.
  13. The original post is almost 4 years old, but I just have to post. Don't put your hope in karma. There is no such thing as karma, so why would you "believe" in it? Put your hope in Jesus and he will bless you! Jesus is real. He will bless you beyond your wildest dreams if you ask Him to. I know this because I'm living proof.
  14. Firework. Katy Perry. "Cause baby you're a firework Come on show 'em what you're worth Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!" As you shoot across the sky-y-y Baby you're a firework Come on let your colors burst Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh!" You're gonna leave 'em all in awe-awe-awe" Boom, boom, boom Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon It's always been inside of you, you, you And now it's time to let it through This motivates me :)
  15. I think everyone has the right to major in anything they want for ANY reason they want. If she wants a nursing degree but never plans on using it, she has that right. She's using it for a stepping stone, not an endpoint. I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
