There's been a lot of rants and vents about nursing, but let's focus on the odd tasks that make you happy. Maybe you love post-OP patients or CRRT or giving bed baths...what's something that makes you happy?
Personally, I love enteral feedings. I love placing NGs and Dobhoffs. I love Kangaroo pumps, I love crushing meds, and flushing the line with 30 ccs. I love hearing the whoosh when I check placement q 4 h. It's my favorite thing!

I like to titrate drips. I like trying to find that sweet spot.

Not exactly a RN task but I love making beds. My mom was a WW2 nurse and we had to have our corners perfect but it brings me joy to have a moments peace and remember my mom ❤️

I love doing shaves and shampoos. There is something morale boosting about clean hair. I use real shampoo, not those ineffective shampoo caps.

I like the vicarious sense of relief I get when dropping an NG in a patient who's belly is so distended it seems like they need to be rolled down to the juicing room, when as soon as you open the esophageal sphincter with the tube they spray stomach contents exorcist-style. I don't think patients find the same sense of relief I assume they do though, but I like to assume it feels way better after stomach is longer about to pop.
I also like titrating drips to a point that is likely far beyond any clinically significant benefit. It does tend to annoy the next nurse though; "why is the insulin at 3 point 3 units/hr" : 3 was too little, 3.5 was too much. I give myself credit for at least avoiding hundredths of a unit per hour.

I love converting people in SVT to NSR with adenosine. I also relish warming up hypothermic patients.

I love drawing labs and butterfly needles. I also love labeling lines/gtts and putting all the Green curos caps on. Almost all of the gtts I used at my old job came with 3 color coated stickers-one sticker for the bag and 2 for the most distal port of the tubing and the most proximal.

I love starting IVs, so happy when it was a hard stick and I see the flash and it flushes well. I love when people ask me to do their IVs because it makes me feel cool... and because I need favors from people whenever I have to do a foley on a larger female. I always seem to get it in the wrong spot. That one is not my favorite task! But some people get satisfaction from difficult foleys... we all have our fave stuff to do! I like this thread ?

I liked setting up PCA pumps. When patients arrived so painful they could hardly move and then to see them smiling and taking fluids. I also liked repositioning to alleviate gas pain, especially the right shoulder referred pain. Medication didn't help it much but repositioning and placing a warmed blanket on the abdomen could make a world of difference.
I always breathed easier when I could get the pain under control.

Oh, yes I forgot foleys. Because we were a urology floor, we often got called to other units to place a foley someone was having trouble with. It felt good to be able to pop it right in. And rack up the Brownie points for when I needed help with chest tubes.

Starting ivs and doing a code, love it.
I'm awfully intrigued by some of these responses! I loved my CNA days, so giving baths is fun for me. I love Foley's, but hate IVs. And labeling lines? Ugh, yes please! I feel so good when everything is labeled and I have time to get bags/drips on deck for the next shift.
Just a reminder that you all rock! I'm glad we have nurses like you out there who relish in helping patients, whether by using real shampoo or sending that heart back into NSR. Way to go!!
