What to you like about being a nurse?

Published

I have been very negative about nursing lately and I'm sick of it! Tell me all the positives you have for being a nurse. :D

Thank you!

Fascinating how there are no replies for this question.

Speaks volumes.

After 30 years, the only thing I can say is...

Many patients realize my efforts in this difficult situation.

When I introduce myself... "Hi, I am your nurse now".. and they simply say

"Thank you".

Specializes in LTC currently.

Im not a nurse yet, but from my mother, her three sisters, my two older cousins, and few nurses that are friends of the family love the flexibility that nurses entails. My oldest aunt and one of my cousin loves working 3-12hr shift at week at the hospital and working home health. My mother on the other hand is the night supervisor at a LTC facility and likes being able to interact with her patients and oversee and assist the other nurses when they are in need of help like with starting IV's and such. She also sees 3 clients working home health. Home health is her favorite aspect of nursing because she gets talk with her clients and get to watch them go from dependent to independent over time. She get to use her teaching skills and able to create a professional bond. I hope you find the things in nursing that are positive to you, even though nursing can sometimes be stressful.:)

Specializes in Med surg, LTC, Administration.

As a people person, I loved the patient interaction. Once divorced, loved the pay.

Specializes in family practice.

I work in homehealth and the part i love is talking with my patient and taking the days i want off. Even if its for two weeks. The pay tho crappy

I'm not a nurse yet. I'm a caregiver right now.

What do I love about it? It gives me purpose. I'd like to continue that purpose...with more education and a higher paycheck!

Specializes in Home health was tops, 2nd was L&D.

Been a nurse for 23 yrs and have been off since about 1 yr with family. I liked the patient interaction in homehealth, the miracles everyday in L&D, the older patients who really needed my care in LTC and solving an infection outbreak in Infection Control.. And those are basically the things I find myself missing right now.

But people who saw me recently and not for the last year are amazed at how relaxed, peaceful, younger I look now..so maybe stress was not so good for my looks? LOL! Did not feel stressed constantly or anything just the good day/bad day type thing.

Actually I kinda of feel stressed now as I weigh options of what direction I would like my life to take.

Yeah I agree it gave me purpose and I am lacking that at present.. but I am trying to decide what is best for me.. Fortunately I have the time and resources to do that right now. I do realize how lucky i am and I have never had this before in my life.

Specializes in Emergency Dept. Trauma. Pediatrics.

All the hot doctors of course. :|

(kidding!)

I have notice they are not nearly as hot as they used to be,, maybe just me:)

Specializes in Med/Surg, DSU, Ortho, Onc, Psych.

Sorry nursing has become a very hard job and is a politically hot potatoe and is very negative right now, with little positives (if any) and very little rewards.

I cannot think of any positives right at this minute. I've said it before and I'll say it again - I would not encourage anyone to go into nursing as a first career, especially if they're young.

I understand but still think that is sad.. Must be awful to go to work with not one positive thing. I hope things change in your life so you can experience at least a few positives every day. Please try to take care of yourself first. I do not know if I could actually make myself go to a job with not one positive thing. Isn't that depressing? It would be for me.. I know you go to get your paycheck and if it is not big enough tat part would not really even be positive.. but maybe just being employed.. could that be positive? Best of luck

I work LTC and I am very new. Still struggling with daily tasks. HOWEVER...today I had a moment. A resident that does not spreak english and therfore cant communicate with me received a call from her family in Iraq. As I held the phone to her ear for 20 minutes...I cried with happiness with her. Its these little things that are keeping me going.
