What kind of holiday bonus do you get?

Just curious what different hospitals, clinics, organizations etc are giving their staff over the holidays this year. As a nurse I've never gotten more than a couple hundred bucks as a Christmas bonus but it's always appreciated when employers give a little extra. What are you getting this year? Cash? Coffee mug? Please share!

I get to be the primary on call nurse for ~200 home health pts. Oh, and since Tuesday is my normal call night, I get to be primary on call for New Years Day as well. I must've been extra good this year for Santa to bring that shining nugget of coal right there!

My school gets a winter break - so i guess that paid break is my reward. i'll take it!:up: i think the staff looks forward to the break more than the kids do!!

My hospital job gives us $25 gift cards to a local super market and a very short window to pick them up so i usually miss out. I wonder what they do with the left over cards??

When I worked at the hospital, a free meal in the cafeteria if you were working the actual holiday. No time and a half, just straight time like it was any other day. No gift cards, no extra check. We did get reminded all the time about how grateful we should be to work there. The doctors always did something nice for us, like a catered meal for EACH shift, or cookies or fruit (and each shift was remembered).

This year my manager gave us really nice jackets (I work for a non-profit as a public health nurse). I also get Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day off with pay. Oh, and Thanksgiving and the day after, also. And because I volunteered at our fall fundraiser (all the nurses did) I get a day off with pay. We got a lovely Christmas lunch at the nicest hotel in town, complete with door prizes. At Thanksgiving we had a potluck. At Halloween we had a catered party. Most days when I come to work I pinch myself to convince myself that it's not a dream. I've never worked anywhere like this, and I thank God for it every day. Especially since the evil hospital is right across the street, and a constant reminder of my years of misery.

The hospital offers a free special lunch/dinner to all employees in the large atrium with the chance to win prizes. Depending on your unit manager, a small gift or nothing. Last few years though was a nice bottle of wine to take home

Holida bonus?? What the heck is that? I've never heard of one...have you?

Oh wait...yes, i HAVE heard of a holiday bonus. The doctors/surgeons and other providers got one of those. I think they call it an "ipad"

bitter, nope! the movie the way we were (1973) :redbeathe released as i started health care career as nurses aide in snf. just like katie in the movie, i'm passionate about my interest: nursing and possitive effect i have on patient care and raising staus of profession.

reality of working in nursing side rather than business end is we staff 24/7, 365 days year through all kinds of conditions: 4hrs sleep, no br breaks, missed meals, snow, hurricanes, no phone service, electrical power outages,floods, holidays. :eek: we do not get the luxury of closing down even for a few minutes.

no bonuses or profit sharing, stock options for saving company money or increasing profits via catching medication error, noticing downward patient spiral and getting prompt intervetion preventing code or lawsuit; increasing patient satisfaction scores due to great team work so people come to your facility, rather than competitor down the street.... things other businesses might reward employees.. some give out holiday ham or turkey, gift cards: dh received several over the years.

it's just the reality we live with every day and those considering joining the ranks need to understand and see if it's truly career they want and can fit in with their lifestyle.... welcoming anyone who wants to work with me though 2027 when i celebrate my 50th yr.

I think most people who go into health care realize that it's a nights, weekends, holidays kind of job. And we understand that hurricanes, floods, power outages are a part of life.

Where I part company from your post is that it does not follow that missed lunches, BR breaks, no recognition etc are necessary parts of nursing.

Do we, as a profession, really think we're going to advance the profession by simply expecting to be treated as doormats? If we're really saving money, and lives, by catching that downward spiral shouldn't that be praised rather than just ignored?

Simple fact is that top-rate people will not enter or stay in nursing in any numbers if, as you post "it's just the reality we live with every day."
