This week, I have learned...
1. I've decided to keep a tally of most critical labs in one admission, starting today (not including renal failure patients): hgb, glucose, potassium, chloride, PT and INR
2. Farawyn's what I learned thread was way cooler than mine are.
Adding an 80s song makes any thread way cooler.
3. Don't trust a 0600 portable chest X-ray to tell you if pulling a chest tube at 1600 is a good idea. It really sucks to tell someone they have a pneumo still.
4. If someone has q4h benzos and opiates, bring both when they ask for one because they'll just ask for the other after you've already run to the med room twice for them.
5. When someone's paracentesis site is still actively dripping rather steadily, it makes me want to squeeze that sucker and see how far I can shoot the fluid out.
6. This week, it actually was sarcoidosis.
7. I know what sarcoidosis is now.
Sarcoidosis sucks.
8. Doctors really need to stop saying, "we're going to go ahead and discharge you," without adding, "this afternoon", especially when they know full well they won't be putting in discharges anytime soon.
9. I think I've realized that the best docs we have actually enjoy my unit the best because they chart there.
My list is boring this week.
What have you learned?
I learned that fuzzy cats are even better than sleeping pills.
I was just sitting on the couch minding my own business, my very cute cat jumped up next to me and turned on the warm fuzzy love factor, I stretched out to cuddle up with him some... and woke up seven hours later with his warm furry self still pressed against me. I did NOT intend to fall asleep on the couch in my clothes without brushing my teeth tonight. If I have cavities next time I go to the dentist, I am blaming my cat. This is the third time this has happened this week!
I got tired of reading labels for high fructose corn syrup and gluten, so I cook most stuff from scratch. I also can't stand to touch raw meat, so I don't cook it often, & I rarely eat out. I think my diet of fruits, veggies, eggs, tofu, and beans is too low in calories and my body has decided to hold on to my fat to prevent starvation. Gluten free isn't for weight loss, but that was a side effect I was looking forward to.
When you see the "Responses have been edited and/or removed" message from the Admin team on a thread you've responded to, do you scroll from the beginning of said thread and see if any of YOUR comments "made the cut" so to speak??
There was one a while ago that wasn't removed, but edited, and I did not appreciate that. I would rather have it completely removed. My post ended up sounding like a sappy unicorn wrote it.

This week I have learned:
1. That my "easy" 3 online classes are going to be way more work than I bargained for at the same time I'm orienting to my new job.
2. That I am still just as confused by the last 2 aspects of my BSN portfolio as I was before classes started.
3. That when you fall asleep at 7 with a migraine, you wake up at 1.
4. Make friends with everyone. Or at least be friendly. It makes day long orientations go by so much faster.
