8/22 What I learned this week....

Published

This week, I have learned...

1. I've decided to keep a tally of most critical labs in one admission, starting today (not including renal failure patients): hgb, glucose, potassium, chloride, PT and INR

2. Farawyn's what I learned thread was way cooler than mine are.

Adding an 80s song makes any thread way cooler.

3. Don't trust a 0600 portable chest X-ray to tell you if pulling a chest tube at 1600 is a good idea. It really sucks to tell someone they have a pneumo still.

4. If someone has q4h benzos and opiates, bring both when they ask for one because they'll just ask for the other after you've already run to the med room twice for them.

5. When someone's paracentesis site is still actively dripping rather steadily, it makes me want to squeeze that sucker and see how far I can shoot the fluid out.

6. This week, it actually was sarcoidosis.

7. I know what sarcoidosis is now.

Sarcoidosis sucks.

8. Doctors really need to stop saying, "we're going to go ahead and discharge you," without adding, "this afternoon", especially when they know full well they won't be putting in discharges anytime soon.

9. I think I've realized that the best docs we have actually enjoy my unit the best because they chart there.

My list is boring this week. :(

What have you learned?

I've learned I'm addicted.

My text went off late last night and after looking at it I checked my AN app IN MY SLEEP- what popped up was a thread about "deers" and deer stampedes. I thought I was dreaming, until I looked at my phone this morning and saw I actually posted in said thread.

bahahahahahahhahaah! That's awesome! :D

This week I learned that even though I am 5 years out of nursing school, at least two former professors both remember me and think well enough of me and agreed to write letters of recommendation as I apply for graduate school (MPH if you were curious).

I also learned that I would like to take more part in the AN community. I've lurked for years but have only just started posting.

OMG I HAVE DONE THAT BEFORE!!!! Even worse when you talk to someone like a week later and they reference something you don't remember ever texting/posting.

I know its another week but oh well.

I learned my playing around in Undergrad and not being serious might have serious consequences as I apply to Nursing school next year. I am so disappointed in myself even though I know I am capable of being an A student.

And NO, I would not want to be young again and get B's and C's.

Call me naive but I think my stubbornness and determination will get me accepted :nailbiting:. Off to write a GREAT personal statement.

I guess bladder stones in cats is a common thing because my mom's cat has bladder stones/bladder issues as well.

My bigger cat had bladder infections all the time and ended up peeing blood everywhere. Took her to the vet, they put her on the Science Diet food and problem solved!

This week I learned how depressing my old floor has become. I don't recognize anybody anymore. A lot of the nurses I worked with have left (at least 3 of them joined me in PACU) to other jobs, and the majority of nurses now are horrible travel nurses and scared new grads. The few that are left from the people I worked with seem frazzled. Once the new grads become less scared and get their year of experience, many of them will leave to be replaced by more scared new grads.

This week I also learned that even the ICU staff are leaving in droves. I've always felt that the ICU at my hospital kind of sucks, mainly because of the people working there. But it's sad to know that if even ICU has such crappy turnover, then there might be something wrong with the hospital.

This week I've come to the conclusion that I'm getting nowhere in trying to get into informatics. I can't become a super user, I can't get an entry level informatics job and I'm starting a degree program in informatics with no informatics experience to back me up. I hope it's not a waste of time and a $50,000+ loan that I won't be able to pay off.

I learned that I am waay too obsessed with animals.

I am not getting one boxer but two.

Ooh I love my old over weight boxer. I don't think I could have handled 2 boxers with all the spazy energy they have. Boxers are such awesome dogs, I'm sure you will enjoy raising those 2 beautiful fur babies.

They think the problem with my mom's cat is stress related. We had to separate him from my cats & my mom is feeding him the expensive brand cat food. He's the spoiled, expensive fat cat now. Lol.

And I have a 14 month old son. I'm sure it will be tough between all three but so worth it!!!

What have I learned? No coffee after 3pm. I went on a major like spree!

Hmm. Last week. What did I learn last week?

1. It's been a long time since I've worked 14+ hours. Boy was that a rough day.

2. Everything that can go wrong will go wrong.

3. To quote one of the physicians I work with? "No good deed goes unpunished."

4. It's best not to say what you REALLY feel about something when your boss's boss and their boss are sitting behind you in a meeting. It probably wouldn't be received well. Despite that what you wanted to say is the truth...sometimes you have to be extra PC. I was smart enough not to say how I really felt, but I came close.

5. Learning new stuff can be fun. Especially when most of the people who you were working with had no clue it was the first time you did something.

6. Despite my denial, I think I might have a discolored cloud that follows me around at work (a sad moody cloud - ie that I have a black cloud).
