8/22 What I learned this week....

Published

This week, I have learned...

1. I've decided to keep a tally of most critical labs in one admission, starting today (not including renal failure patients): hgb, glucose, potassium, chloride, PT and INR

2. Farawyn's what I learned thread was way cooler than mine are.

Adding an 80s song makes any thread way cooler.

3. Don't trust a 0600 portable chest X-ray to tell you if pulling a chest tube at 1600 is a good idea. It really sucks to tell someone they have a pneumo still.

4. If someone has q4h benzos and opiates, bring both when they ask for one because they'll just ask for the other after you've already run to the med room twice for them.

5. When someone's paracentesis site is still actively dripping rather steadily, it makes me want to squeeze that sucker and see how far I can shoot the fluid out.

6. This week, it actually was sarcoidosis.

7. I know what sarcoidosis is now.

Sarcoidosis sucks.

8. Doctors really need to stop saying, "we're going to go ahead and discharge you," without adding, "this afternoon", especially when they know full well they won't be putting in discharges anytime soon.

9. I think I've realized that the best docs we have actually enjoy my unit the best because they chart there.

My list is boring this week. :(

What have you learned?

I've learned someone is slow coding our DNR that is the sexless nurse thread...

Someone pull the plug already!!!

Someone pull the plug already!!!

But there's only 448 comments!

I thought the "What are my options?" thread was going to get interesting. I kind of miss the silly member who always posts dramatic threads about reprimanding heartless high school students on trips in Europe and witnessing the most bizarre situations.

Where is this jewel?

Here you go! It's an OLD thread but skip to the last page:)

Edit: ok, maybe it's not as old as I thought. But still...

The person who didn't take the first six times seriously....oh I laughed out loud.

Guys. For real. If it takes me seven times to pass NCLEX, someone steal my license and make me go back to school.

I think I might steal it after the first 3 times. I would be extremely worried if you couldn't pass on the 3rd attempt, let alone the 7th attempt. Don't you have to approach the BON after failing it a certain number of times and explain why you failed? I can't imagine doing that more than once.

I feel like I can't have too much of an opinion, seeing as I've never taken this test. But I would be very worried about my abilities if I struggled to pass it.

That's horrifying. I wish it was mandatory that you could only take the NCLEX 3 times then you had to remediate. This taking the NCLEX 5,6,7 times is just too much.

I learned that the family member who is hovering and touching and interfering in my work is the mentally ill sister of my sweet, worried patient. Instead of cursing the mentally ill sis I imagined what it would be like to be in that bed watching your sister being her aggravating self, worrying if she will be able to function if I don't make it out of this bed. This straightened my head right out.

I learned that providers have their fair share of blown calls too....like, some really really badly blown ones.

I learned that my trigs are borderline, up from totally normal at my last physical. Bye-bye to bread and sugar, all for a good cause.

I am learning so much. I learned that I unfortunately missed out on the whole sexless nurse thread. Started reading and then there was a huge derailment, and I didn't have the heart to continue reading. The comments had me bursting out in laughter though.

I've learned...

1. I need to stop being a lurker here and start posting. I've seen some amazing advice and guidance throughout this past year.

2. The internet is a strange place with some of the threads I've seen (especially today for whatever reason). On the contrary though, it is a great place.

3. I am not ready to start school back up again after this break.

4. I really need to get to bed sooner. I can already envision tomorrow's under eye circles.
