8/22 What I learned this week....

Published

This week, I have learned...

1. I've decided to keep a tally of most critical labs in one admission, starting today (not including renal failure patients): hgb, glucose, potassium, chloride, PT and INR

2. Farawyn's what I learned thread was way cooler than mine are.

Adding an 80s song makes any thread way cooler.

3. Don't trust a 0600 portable chest X-ray to tell you if pulling a chest tube at 1600 is a good idea. It really sucks to tell someone they have a pneumo still.

4. If someone has q4h benzos and opiates, bring both when they ask for one because they'll just ask for the other after you've already run to the med room twice for them.

5. When someone's paracentesis site is still actively dripping rather steadily, it makes me want to squeeze that sucker and see how far I can shoot the fluid out.

6. This week, it actually was sarcoidosis.

7. I know what sarcoidosis is now.

Sarcoidosis sucks.

8. Doctors really need to stop saying, "we're going to go ahead and discharge you," without adding, "this afternoon", especially when they know full well they won't be putting in discharges anytime soon.

9. I think I've realized that the best docs we have actually enjoy my unit the best because they chart there.

My list is boring this week. :(

What have you learned?

Medically she's fine, which is good! Now I need to figure out the next step. I bought Cat Attract litter and have added a second litter box. Hopefully this will do the trick! Glad you found out about his bladder stones and that he's doing better

I guess bladder stones in cats is a common thing because my mom's cat has bladder stones/bladder issues as well.

Specializes in Cardiac and OR.
Lol....fat cats may not be the healthiest (or cleanest) but they are awfully huggable.

I agree. My sweet girl is the cat in my avatar pic. She's so fluffy, I'm gonna die! (long live Agnes from Despicable Me)

This week I've learned-

1) Being a single mom with a daughter in kindergarten is MUCH easier than being a single mom with a toddler or otherwise (remind me why I have baby fever, again?)

2) I really, really, REALLY hate pelvic exams. If your lady parts is that sick that you need to go to the hospital, I want NO part in it.

3) I actually really enjoy helping nursing students. Especially when they are eager to learn any and everything and they are so willing to do something as simple as empty a catheter or be an extra set of hands for me.

4) On a crazy day, having nursing students can be a GOD SEND. And sometimes the LPN students are more eager to learn than the RN students and from my experience tend to be more willing to help out than the RN students. (General observation, definitely not true for any and all situations)

5) to never underestimate the power of a simple genuine compliment from a patient and on the other side, never underestimate the power a simple compliment/a few encouraging words can have on a patient. :)

LOL. Story is too fresh. Don't want to go into details. LOL LOL LOL.

Now we're all dying to know though. You'll have to start a thread about it. When you're ready. ;)

That it frustrates me to no end when I don't get any prn hrs for the pay period. Ugh!

My friend put saran wrap around her phone so she could keep using it. The lengths people go to to salvage their phones... Replace that screen!

Thankfully I bought the warranty when I first got the phone, so I'll be able to get a new one tomorrow. Until then, it's in a plastic bag tucked inside my purse.

As long as it's not in your Uggs.

I have a funny story about our Pomeranian named Bunny. So we kept smelling something funny in the house but couldn't locate the smell. We would smell it in one room but then it the smell disappear. So my mom & I cleaned the house from top to bottom but the smell persisted. So then my mom decided to smell dog butts, she picks up Bunny & inches away from her face & matted into Bunny's butt is the most disgusting smelling dog poop. Lol. So my mom cleaned her up then shaved her butt.

These are the stories that make me wonder why on earth we let animals jump around our houses. But then they are pretty cute and snuggly.

My old little Bootsie-boo had them and did very well with the Purina Urinary Tract dry food.

In her & my mom's defense, my mom rescued her. When my mom took Bunny in, she was malnourished & couldn't walk on her back legs. My moms didn't think Bunny would ever walk on her back legs again. She does now but still has issues with her back legs, they will give out or just shake.

Amen. I'm the first one they call off if no one asks (policy can bite me). I have 6 hours this pay period. Lots of time to spend on AN, though.

Psh. I don't even own those :p But if I did, I would definitely wear them with shorts and a bikini.
