This week, I have learned...
1. I've decided to keep a tally of most critical labs in one admission, starting today (not including renal failure patients): hgb, glucose, potassium, chloride, PT and INR
2. Farawyn's what I learned thread was way cooler than mine are.
Adding an 80s song makes any thread way cooler.
3. Don't trust a 0600 portable chest X-ray to tell you if pulling a chest tube at 1600 is a good idea. It really sucks to tell someone they have a pneumo still.
4. If someone has q4h benzos and opiates, bring both when they ask for one because they'll just ask for the other after you've already run to the med room twice for them.
5. When someone's paracentesis site is still actively dripping rather steadily, it makes me want to squeeze that sucker and see how far I can shoot the fluid out.
6. This week, it actually was sarcoidosis.
7. I know what sarcoidosis is now.
Sarcoidosis sucks.
8. Doctors really need to stop saying, "we're going to go ahead and discharge you," without adding, "this afternoon", especially when they know full well they won't be putting in discharges anytime soon.
9. I think I've realized that the best docs we have actually enjoy my unit the best because they chart there.
My list is boring this week.
What have you learned?
1) I learned lurking on AN is awsome - I feel like such a good stalker.
2) I learned that not all textbooks are available on Amazon.
3) I learned I have several awesome professors this fall.
4) I learned that I'm not scared of new things anymore. Instead, I just spend an enourmous amount of time overpreparing for that new thing.
5) I learned that I really love my kitty, and would miss her if she doesn't survive this latest disease.
6) I learned that I really admire many of the regular posters here on AN! Among other things, you all have given me a sense of what nursing will actually be like.
Pt's who are inclined to elope can manage to get quite a ways away from the hospital at night, even in a pt gown. And when the local police department calls and asks if you are missing a patient, don't assume it's your elopement precautions patient. It could be that sweet man who flipped at midnight.
Heh. When I worked in psych, we had a pt. who eloped, made it to peds., ran into the playroom and started yelling, "Kids, kids...you've got to help me!"
We also got a phone call from someone who lived directly across the street from the side of hospital where the psych unit was located. "Um, are you people missing a pt.?" Pt had quietly slipped out of the unit, and using bed linens, tied them together like a rope and scaled down the side of the hospital. Yep, we got him back.
This week I learned....
1) I have to start limiting my school and work activities to preserve my sanity well in advance of the madness creeping up on me.
2) I am able to do a lot of things if I just keep trying (though it is inviting a threat to my wellness).
3) I miss writing and I need to do more of it.
4) Hummingbirds truly detest ants (perhaps more than I do).
5) Japanese beetles will ride in your car with you whether you invited them in or not.
6) I cannot wait any longer for school to start up again!!!
â–ª I learned Botox has even more uses than I'd thought before.
â–ª I learned my fat furry cat doesn't look as bad as I'd feared after she had her booty shaved dye to her inability to clean that area well enough.
â–ª Amazon has some good deals on photography equipment. (If only I had a better understanding of how to use it all properly) I need to take a class but for now, here's to winging it and hopefully gleaning some ideas from ebooks and blogs.
