Well, actually i'm not into nursing school yet 'coz i was born in '88. I'm a straight male.
Well, before i decide which course/major i would take, i need some help/opinion.
Nursing is one of the option in for my future.
Well, let me ask you straightly,
"WHAT DO YOU GIRLS THINK ABOUT MALE NURSES ???"
I like having someone strong to help me with a transfer or moving a patient up in bed. At 5'4, 110 lb, I don't have much strength and even if I get another female to help me, we sometimes still have trouble depending on the size of the patient. PLUS, it's nice to talk with some testosterone every now and then, instead of having to deal with estrogen chit chat and monthly moods all the time! In my class of 60, we have 54 females so you can bet I like the variety!
A nurse is a nurse.
End of story. It makes no difference as to what gender, color, age, etc.........but that you know what you are doing and are very compassionate doing it.
If you are worried about what others think, then perhaps this is not a field for you.
You have to want to do it because it is something that you really want to do.
Hi HM,
I'm guessing you asked this question because of the old joke about all male Nurses being gay - am I right? My older brother went to Nursing School back in the late 70's when there were very few males in the profession and got ribbed quite a bit from all his "guy friends" about what they saw as a very "feminine" choice of careers. Today, there are tons of male Nurses and most of the ones I've worked with seem to choose the Trauma or OR type positions rather than working on the floors, although I'm sure there are plenty that do that. My brother and his wife have been Trauma Nurses for years now - he loves the adrenaline rush and challenge of that particular part of Nursing - it's also the type of job all of the guys in my class plan on doing.
If you're worried about people thinking your gay just because you're a Nurse - who cares, it's their problem, not yours. It's an incredibly demanding, high stress job and as other posters have said - gay, straight -whatever - if you're a compassionate, caring person and can give your all to your patients, it's a wonderful profession to belong to.
Not to bash my own gender, but when 15 females are working in the same small area - there seems to always be a lot of catty stuff going on and I hate that. I've never encountered that sort of stuff with the guys and it's one of the reasons I prefer working with them... Just my opinion...

Isn't that funky? How apparently we choose our professions based on sexual orientation?I don't understand why you bring your sexual orientation into the equation at all.
Guys in nursing? Yep, gotta be gay. The assumption ofcourse continues along the lines of the females of the profession being heterosexual - naturally! How else can we have them Mediaos?
Female cop? Must have issues, perhaps even - gasp! - a tomboy.
The list is endless.
I love it when people get all bent out of shape about stuff that never really affects them anyhow.

I think having guys in the profession is great. The only area I think it becomes problematic is OB for some reason--mostly because of the patients response (although many patients have no probs with a male OBGYN "birthing" their baby so I dont get it). PERSONALLY, I think women should be part of that whole deal (I am a big proponent of midwifery so I have my views--but I think EVERY man needs to see the process of childbirth at least once to see how amazing it is). That said, why not do it?? You will be in the minority, yes. I have some great guys in my class--we only have a handful (and a couple that arent doing so hot but its 'cuz they dont study). Are you empathetic, caring, compassionate, intelligent, and a critical thinker who is willing to work very, very hard? Yes? Then you got what it takes! GL! :) :) :)
I think having a male nurse is great, as long as you have the compassion for your job and you're competent, then why not? I have had the same male ob-gyn doctor for both my kids. At first I was kind of nervous to have a male ob doctor, but I heard a lot of good things about him and recommendations, as well as he has A LOT of experience delivering babies, he cares for his patients, and loves his job. So I think if you have those traits when working in this field, then you would make a great candidate in nursing. you go boy! lol...matter of fact they should have male nurses on the smilie list as well as female nurses:nurse: !!!!

Well, I don't start out thinking that each male nurse is gay and then expect them to prove otherwise. Sounds like you're kind of hung up on the gay thing. I've lived a long time, kiddo. I have two cousins that live a gay lifestyle. They are both very nice guys. One is not in the least bit effeminate. Believe me, someone's sexual orientation has nothing to do with how they do their job. You are very much mistaken if you think you can look at a man, watch them for a bit and determine if they are gay or straight. I'll just chalk that up to your being only 17 or 18 years old. If this is what is holding you back from a very wonderful career you could have helping people, then you are not ready for the adult world.
