Is it "Lets Make A Deal," "Jokers Wild", or something more like "Gilligan's Island" or "Beverly Hillbillies?" We all know some units are run better than others. Some operate smoothly and everyone lives in happyville. Others, well lets just say, more closely resemble "Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo." Whats your gameshow/unit?

A day at my workplace is similar to playing a game of Monopoly: coworkers are trying to amass brownie points, promotions and 'things,' and they'll walk all over others to get to the top.

"Hell's Kitchen". We run our butts off all day, performing seemingly impossible tasks in record-breaking time. We rely on our creativity to get the job done with limited supplies and staff while management stands back and watches without breaking a sweat. And just when we finally might have a chance to sit down and document, have a drink of water, or go to the bathroom, in comes management to tell us about everything we are doing wrong, inform us that we're getting an admission, or that they're sending a CNA home because they believe we are "overstaffed".

A cross between the 'Amazing Race' and that old kid's game-show that used to air on Nickelodeon called, 'Double Dare'.
Every shift is a 16-hour 'physical/mental challenge'. I don't have problems with my coworkers. Everyone's always great. You want good coworkers? Be one.
It's just the nature of the job and you know how everyone has to pick up the slack when you're understaffed? Well, we can't keep med aides and we routinely have 3 aides on the floor - and management STILL wants both to take hour-long lunches.
Not that they have been. I tell the aides to take 30 minute lunches with no 'damns' given.
One of the ADONs came strolling in to 'check up on us' and began inquiring about the lunches. "Did you ask --"
Every single exchange with this 'dizzy' broad begins with a stupid question. Of course, I didn't 'ask'.
I mean, it's easy for some in management - someone like HER - to say, 'Yeah, one med aide can pass the whole facility' or 'Ok, you guys can handle it with 3 CNA'. They aren't the ones having to 'make do'. Hell, half of 'em aren't even nurses and don't have healthcare experience. They just stand about 'supervising' and looking for things to complain about. Good old teamwork!
But, anyway, here's the bottomline: One aide goes for their hour break leaving us with 2 aides on the floor trying to care for 90 eloping/wandering/incontinent 'psych' residents for three hours on day shift. Of course, I cut their breaks. A 'command decision' was appropriate and necessary. If these people want the facility to run efficiently and the residents to be taken care of, they need to give our shift some wiggle room.
Does it scare anyone that we're a 5-star rated facility?
Anyway, these days after my shifts, I wake up sore. Monday, I couldn't even go to class because my butt and quads were just raw. Like I'd spent the previous day leaping hurdles or something.

Lately it's been the Real Housewives of (insert city of choice). Between families manipulating staff and staff manipulating other staff....it's just a hot mess.
