Just saw a thread from a fairly distressed RN who fears losing her first nursing job. The very first response was from someone who stated "while I am not a nurse, I think ...."
It made me stop and think - I wonder what draws non-nurse, non-medical people here? And to give advice? I can't imagine being interested enough in an engineering forum, for example, to hang out on it, let alone offer advice in an area in which I have no experience or training.
Don't get me wrong, I have no issue with anyone posting on any forum. I just find it curious. Perhaps my worldview is too limited and I need to expand my Internet browsing beyond AN.com?
Well I came here initially pondering a late in life career change. I have always been fascinated with the medical profession. Love documentaries, would rather watch Trauma in the ER then basketball. Decided against it but continued to follow. I have seen this thread referenced other places. People interact with healthcare providers like not other. They are expected to place trust in people they do not know like no where else. It seems only natural they would like a glimpse into who they really are. The vast majority of posts are clinical and non professionals have no clue or input. However when you talk about patient interaction or less clinical topics it would seem getting the patient/ non provider view might have value and interest for some. One last thought from an outsider, everyone needs to vent, everyone gets that. When you vent on the Internet as someone said you might as well be commenting with a bull horn other than the net reaches a lot more people. You can't expect to tell patients I am a professional you need to trust me, you need to compromise your modesty because I am a professional and then post all sorts of off color or inappropriate posts or berate and criticize patients on line and expect no reaction. For what it's worth.

My personal opinion is that overall the general public has lost a lot of trust in health care professionals.

Ehh...PEOPLE have become so distrustful of PEOPLE more than ever...makes it much worse when people talk logic and then people say "not true!!!" People are more rooted in their emotions...times are changing, an the economy being horrible, hurting a lot of individuals and families out here...sometimes the hopelessness and frustration is louder than the hope itself.
Just because someone isn't a nurse doesn't mean they don't have an opinion.
Well yes, but as my husband is constantly telling me, just because one has an opinion, it doesn't mean they MUST share it. I've read boards for other professions/vocations/jobs out of curiosity. But it doesn't mean I have to post my opinion there. Just because one CAN post in a thread, it doesn't mean they SHOULD.
What draws non-nurses to AN....hmmm....could it be...SATAN?!?
You just made the thread.
I'm an outsider I joined because I respect the nursing profession so much. Members of your profession have always been good to me. I wanted to show my appreciation by offering kind words to a profession who in my opinion doesn't get the credit they so deserve, maybe offer a pick me up after a bad shift, and to remind nurses they have some fans and admirers out there! You all rock!!

I am currently taking prerequisites to enter nursing school next year. Most of my posts are on the pre-nursing forum. I did reply to a couple of posts regarding workplace bullying and collegues/clients asking intrusive questions however I wasn't giving advice on something I know nothing about. I am not a nurse but a hopeful future nurse and thus it would be ridiculous for me to give advice on nursing when I am not one.
