Is this ACLS tool good for a newbie?
I am currently a nursing student, and am starting a new job as a nurse tech in the ICU soon. I am committed to learning as much as I can as well as I can. I hope to be an asset to the department some day, and I want my co-workers to see that I strive for improvement. I have been reading everything I can about critical care on AllNurses for months to help me prepare mentally as much as possible. I have been reviewing BLS for healthcare providers, and also pharm drugs that are used in the ICU. I came across this site today, and I'm wondering if it's worth the $16.95 membership fee for 3 months. http://acls-algorithms.com/non-member-page?wlfrom=%2Facls-megacode-simulator%2Facls-simulator%2Facls-training-scenario-2 I don't want to spend money on something that is worthless, so if you have any input I would appreciate it. I have purchased the pocket ICU Book that was mentioned on this site, and it will be arriving next week from Amazon. Thanks so much!

Nursing School and K-12
I homeschooled my kids for 7 years. They went to public school when I started nursing school. From my personal experience, I don't think it's possible to even do both at the same time POORLY, let alone well.

Good hand lotion?
I've tried most of these. What seems to be the cheapest GOOD lotion is A&D ointment from the dollar store. :)

Question for Mom's in Nursing School
I'm in my second semester of nursing school. I am married with 4 kids. It's hard to do everything. I don't feel like I am doing anything very well, but we are hanging in there. My kids have had to take over the house work. I have missed parent teacher conferences because of clinical. However, my family is very supportive. My husband does everything he can to help me. I'm making B's in all my classes because sometimes my family has to come first - even if I have a test the next day. You just make it work. Good luck to you! :)

Questioning the nurse during clinical
A couple of weeks ago in clinical, I actually made a discovery during an assessment that saved my patient's life. Don't feel stupid. I felt like a moron too for questioning the nurse, but my patient got well and went home instead of to the morgue.

Air bubble in pre-filled syringes
I don't know why, but my skills teacher told us last week that it was manufactured with the intention of leaving the bubble in and it won't hurt the patient.

This is a weird question I guess
I totally agree. However, where I live, many people cannot afford to see a specialist, even with insurance. We were in that situation ourselves for several years after the economy crashed in Michigan. In my case, I'm old enough that we just didn't go to the doctor except maybe once every few years.

And you don't really know how bad a girl's cramps really are. When I was a teenager, I used to pass out from my cramps. Little did I know it was only the beginning of my reproductive problems. I was on bedrest with every pregnancy, and I ended up getting a hysterectomy in my early 30's because I would hemorrhage every month. I loved being pregnant because bedrest and childbirth was easier than having periods. I couldn't take Midol because it would make me pass out faster. I wish everyone could just take a Midol and go back to class. Unfortunately, I missed a day of school almost every month for my problem. I never missed for anything else because I never wanted to do makeup work.

What is the proper way to address a resident who was a titled health professional?
Thank you for the replies. I want to show respect to the people I care for. I feel that your pointers will help me do that!

What is the proper way to address a resident who was a titled health professional?
I was surprised to find that a resident of the nursing home where I was at a clinical rotation was being addressed by his/her first name. He/she was a prominent health care provider in the area when I was a child. What is typically done in this situation? I plan to ask my clinical instructor in private, but I won't see her for a few days. Thanks!

Heads up to all new nursing students:
I start success seminar this week - all week. Then a week off before starting classes. I am pretty nervous - can't sleep at night. I appreciate your words of encouragement. I'm also glad my school is having a week long success seminar for us. I hope it helps.

How many hours a week did you REALLY have to study for pharmacology?
Our syllabus says we will have to realistically plan on studying 20-30 hours a week - just for pharm. I thought it was a stretch until I started working on my first chapters due when school starts. 11 chapters in the first 3 weeks, the other 100 or so in the other 12 weeks. I think 20-30 hours a week might be right after all. Not to mention that the material is difficult, which I'm sure you all know. Thoughts? Should I really just schedule 25 hours a week for pharm?

Paying for Course syllabus?
And the instructor has the copyright to it. You are not allowed to make copies. They must spend weeks writing them - and yes, it's like having another text book.

Paying for Course syllabus?
I had to purchase about 6 syllabi for my nursing classes this semester alone. They are expensive - the most expensive was almost $40. It just depends on the school. I am just thankful to get into this school, though. It's highly competitive and the students here are very employable after graduation.
