What draws non-nurses to AN.com?

Published

Just saw a thread from a fairly distressed RN who fears losing her first nursing job. The very first response was from someone who stated "while I am not a nurse, I think ...."

It made me stop and think - I wonder what draws non-nurse, non-medical people here? And to give advice? I can't imagine being interested enough in an engineering forum, for example, to hang out on it, let alone offer advice in an area in which I have no experience or training.

Don't get me wrong, I have no issue with anyone posting on any forum. I just find it curious. Perhaps my worldview is too limited and I need to expand my Internet browsing beyond AN.com?

I sincerely wish you could point to the posts who have been "bossy, demeaning and critical" or that have "attacked" anyone because I just can't find them.

Snobbish is NOT a strong word, it conveys exactly some of the opinions on here. It's ridiculous. I hope I am never that jaded, bossy, demeaning, and critical of ANYONE else in this profession, be it patients, my cohorts, or other nurses once I am nursing. I stand up for the underdog and many of you are attacking someone who doesn't deserve it at all, so you should check yourselves and look in the mirror and ask what in the world is so special about you that you snub your nose at any other person in the medical community. You have the same bodily functions as everyone else, and that CNA or nursing student you are putting down today may be wiping your :poop: up in the future. Think about your words. Good grief.

I can't find them either...and I'm not counting rants.

If anything, I see intense posts from people outside of the profession. Not that there's anything wrong with that.... :whistling:

Well, I'm not a nurse.

I was not a nurse when I first visited this site. I am certainly glad no one made me feel as if I was not welcome, or I might have never come back. AS a nurse, I've tried to be as helpful to those in my specialty, as I can be. I hope that I've been successful at that. I might just as easily have left, knickers in a wad, and taken my (eventual) helpfulness with me.

Same scenario could apply to EVERY visitor to this site.

Well I didn't read the middle of this thread but I don't know why. I agree it's strange to me. From reading the first page and then reading the last I'm curious how about the middle and may have to go back. Anyhow I have no idea I would never be interested to go on a similar board of a different profession. I don't mind it but I do think there are certain issues that people that aren't nurses don't really understand so advice from non-nurses may not be as useful. I will also say since I was a recent student and have not been an RN long I never could have imagined how different things are as a nurse. Going to school was more like window shopping but really does not give you much insight which I never would have thought things could/would be so different performing the nurses role. I guess my point is even students may not have as much insight as they think, I know I didn't. I'm sure as my experience expands this will become even more apparent.

Honestly, I think most of the time, when people claim to be "attacked" they are just naive, and don't have a lot of experience posting outside the moderated, protective bubble that is AN.com. Go post for a while at 4chan, then come back here and talk about how you've been "attacked" here.

This is what I have to say

"No one can make you feel inferior without your consent"

Eleanor Roosevelt

"Let me never fall into the vulgar mistake of dreaming that I am persecuted whenever I am contradicted".......Ralph Waldo Emerson

I have heard that one before and couldn't stop laughing. I once had an administer tell me (in the interview phase) that he could be a nurse because he knows everything that we do! I responded by telling him that he really did not want to go there with me.

Nah, not for a long time. I only have 2-3 boards I hang out at regularly nowadays.

ill agree with that. personally I didn't see anything offensive about ops initial post. if I post about certain things I wouldn't mind nonnurses chiming in...so long as they have perspective. for instance, I dont have to b a nurse to talk about employee burnout bc I have been (in my past profession.). burnout is burnout. the only variance is the circumstance (unique to the profession) that led to it.

I dont have to b a nurse to talk about training newbs and students and how poorly nursing students tend to b treated at clinical sites (and i have by the way) bc I used to do this in a prior profession. yes...most of the time it was sprung on me. yes...I usually had to precept more than one. hell no -I don't like to precept. still...I did it with a smile. i never disrespected the students. i never treated my students with disdain, no matter how busy I was.

anyway... I can understand the person in question getting a little hot under yhe collar though. they're defending and when you've been 'called out', I suppose you have a right to do that.

lastly, I won't say that all pre/nursing students on here r unfairly unattacked. lol some have it coming...and when they're shown to 'the kiddie table', I never feel sorry for them.
