What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

I think that is because the republican party is best at communicating grievance. Their priorities have shifted and the shift has accelerated since the Tea Party extremism was embraced by the party leadership.

Yes the rise of hope in America by electing a Black President and the immediate rise of the anti-Obama Tea Party was a moment that wound up being a seismic shift that lead us here to where we are today.

Update on U.S. training Ukrainian army.  Son told me drones capable of dropping grenades.

I've been drawn to You Tube channel podcast "Speak The Truth"" --  Robert Terkla retired US Special forces  podcast focusing on War in Ukraine. He's had on retired US soldiers who volunteered in Ukraine,  he outlines maps showing Ukrainian troop movements, and today Life under Russian War Crimes -including Bucha.

Social Security’s Cost-of-Living Increase Will Be Largest in Four Decades, an Estimate Says https://nyti.ms/3Dj81dM

Government inflation figures for August, released on Tuesday, point to a Social Security cost-of-living adjustment, known as the COLA, of 8.7 percent, according to an estimate by a nonpartisan group that lobbies for seniors. The Social Security Administration will announce the final figure on Oct. 13, after the release of September inflation data.

This is welcome news.

What a High-Risk Pregnancy Looks Like After Dobbs https://nyti.ms/3BAtbmm

Quote

Everything changed on the day of the Dobbs decision, June 24. By the end of that Friday, a three-year-old law had been triggered into effect, a so-called “heartbeat bill” that made it a felony to terminate a pregnancy after a fetal heartbeat has been detected. A heartbeat can generally be detected at around six gestational weeks, before many women know they are pregnant; previously abortions were permitted, with restrictions, until 22 gestational weeks. All of a sudden, most of the termination procedures scheduled a week earlier by the Cleveland Clinic were now crimes. Only three exceptions allowed for abortions after the new cutoff: to prevent the mother’s death; to forestall a “serious risk of the substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function of the pregnant woman”; and to respond to ectopic pregnancies, in which a fertilized egg implants itself outside the uterus.

It's difficult to understand the forced pregnancy thinking.

Durham Inquiry Appears to Wind Down as Grand Jury Expires https://nyti.ms/3DoD6ws

No further legal action? Wait... wasn't the Russia hoax scandal supposed to be obvious? This inability to find wrong doing reminds me of the Benghazi investigations that were conducted on a political candidate for the presidency. It appears that republicans aren't very good at finding and reporting criminal behavior in politicians and politics.

Maybe Durhams was all for show... or maybe the expectation from Trump was that Durham would fabricate evidence and lock them up just to please him.

Recently in these threads, some have expressed concern over "wasting" tax payer dollars to have what in their opinion is irrelevant witnesses, travel to testify at the Jan 6 hearings.   Or, to have debates set up for US Senate candidates who in their view are unqualified.

Those members, who seemingly have a small and particular diet of news sources they consume, may have missed this story on about a waste of tax payer dollars (and disregard for the climate change crisis):

"Biden and first lady Jill Biden departed Washington for Delaware at roughly 6 p.m. Tuesday. They voted, hopped back on Air Force One and were flying back to Washington by 8 p.m."

Were you referencing me or is that language more like Trump's reference to "many people"?

Speaking of narrow media consumption... Meanwhile, we (the previously mentioned members) could speculate that he was traveling to play golf rather than to vote just to throw shade at the priorities in reporting at that media outlet.  Because we all know that it's fine to spend tax dollars traveling to pay golf... based upon the previous reporting from this outlet.

Ho hum

Meanwhile more of that affidavit was unredacted... it reflects very poorly on Trump and his damage to our national security.

Perhaps the Bidens were worried about rumors of election fraud concerning mail-in ballots. I thought it was traditional for politicians, including Presidents,  to travel to their home states to vote.

Yes it is most obvious (and has been for quite some time) that the elite class does not practice what they preach! Biden could have simply mailed a ballot but instead decided to waste all that tax payer money and increase his carbon footprint.
Hmm, makes one wonder doesn’t it.

I wonder how many women are forced to get pregnant, statistics please!

The data is available to you on rape and pregnancy.  No need to wonder... at least in terms of reported rape.

What's perhaps more interesting is the number of women (and girls apparently) who are going to be forced, by conservative government, to carry pregnancies to term. Imagine that.

Well since you have no number I would think that the number of pregnancies that result from rape are minuscule. And those women are able to get abortions if they choose.

What is interesting is the number of abortions performed every year (~600,000-700,000, and probably more) in the US because they are unwanted pregnancies. Seems to me with all the contraceptives so easily available and the fact that a girl/woman can simply drop off a newborn with no questions asked there would be less. I am not judging anyone but I find it sad that so many choose to put to death their own child when there are other options readily available even after  the pregnancy occurs (adoption or safe haven). The mother will have to live with the consequences of the decision (some are minors who as we know do not have fully developed brains yet) and of course the baby in these instances has no voice/choice in the matter. And for that matter neither does the father.
