What would you be in another life?

Nurses General Nursing

Hey all,

So I'm sure there are probably some old threads about this, but what would you do if you hadn't gotten into nursing school, passed NCLEX, or not gotten that first job in the nursing field? What would your backup plan have been? Or what did you do before nursing? If you left nursing, why and what do you do now?

I'm just being curious, but I suppose I can start. If I hadn't gotten into nursing school, I would have become either a math teacher or gone into law and done family type stuff.

Can't wait to read what all you have to say!

I've had 4 careers in my lifetime, and honestly given how much nursing has changed in the past decade I think instead of nursing as my last(hopefully!) job I'd have opened my own business. Not sure what type of business LOL, but it'd be my own.

Great question. E-commerce. :) The only thing is I am doing both part time now and not in another life. I believe the value that anything is possible when your heart is in it. :)

Attorney, Singer, the list is long... LOL

Specializes in OB, Medical-Legal, Public Health.

I considered the military, but an older brother talked me out of it. I'm pretty much a pacifist, so my career probably wouldn't have lasted long. A wise friend says we need to spend our days doing something we enjoy so much we lose track of time. Another recommended doing something that makes more of you. I like offering hospitality to guests and feeding them. Owning my own business is too much headache, so I'll say managing a tea room or coffee shop. Customers cold eat healthy or splurge, but everything would be fresh and delicious. Our health department sanitation score would be excellent. Thanks for asking. This was fun.

Specializes in Hematology-oncology.

My original career goal was to be a concert pianist. I was in quite a few state competitions in high school, and practiced for hours a day.

Luckily, my mother guessed that this career goal wasn't the most secure, so she signed me up for the candy striper program at my local hospital. I fell in love with nursing, but still play the piano now and then :)

Specializes in Gerontology, Education.

My first career was in accounting/finance because math is beautiful to me. Nursing as a career came to me after my boys were in the NICU for 8 weeks - those nurses always looked exhausted but fulfilled. But as a teenager I was sure I'd be a translator at the UN, the US ambassador to Peru, or an NFL owner (Buffalo Bills, please).

Specializes in Pediatric Critical Care.

In some parallel universe, I am a trophy wife with a fabulous wardrobe.

Your teenage self had such high aspirations! I love it.

I would be born wealthy. Absent that I would have followed in my fathers' footsteps as he wanted me to do and been a police officer. I would be retired now :-)

I would've been born in Ireland & married Bono ! (He's the lead singer of U2, for you youngsters.) :)

I'd be a private detective and maybe write a little poetry on the side.

I am in nursing school and I love it and also love being at clinical and interact with patients but I ultimately have dreams of owning my own business and I want to go into poultry farming. In 20 years or so would love to have an organic chicken farm and also make chicken feed as well as sell eggs and have a hatching. I want to be big in the industry and dominate it. Eat more chicken, please.
