What would you be in another life?

Hey all,

So I'm sure there are probably some old threads about this, but what would you do if you hadn't gotten into nursing school, passed NCLEX, or not gotten that first job in the nursing field? What would your backup plan have been? Or what did you do before nursing? If you left nursing, why and what do you do now?

I'm just being curious, but I suppose I can start. If I hadn't gotten into nursing school, I would have become either a math teacher or gone into law and done family type stuff.

My original degree was in theater, for stage management and scenic design. I ended up working as a legal secretary before I went back to school for nursing.

I would much rather have a business degree than a nursing degree. If I could go and do it all over again that's what I would do!

A professional singer but it would have never worked out, because I can't sing except for in the shower.

Yeah, it's been a topic before a time or two, but it's an interesting one.

I was a programmer or programmer/analyst for a long time. Then a nurse for the past 5 years.

Other tihngs I coulda or woulda or maybe coulda been: artist, writer, chef, English professor, drummer, National Park ranger, travel guide, ??? Since I'm not exactly 20 (or 30, or...) any more, I'm going to try to concentrate on art (especially) and writing, and hopefully some volunteer (or paid) disaster relief nursing this decade.

If I didn't pursue nursing, I guess I would be a chemistry researcher working in a laboratory doing experiments. Chemistry is my first bachelor, and I always love doing chemistry experiment, especially organic chemistry. I planned to get a Ph.D in chemistry at first, but finally I changed my mind after falling in love with nursing. I do enjoy the interactions between nurses and patients. It is one of the reason I chose nursing as a career.

A fiction author/writer. Would've liked the gift of being able to put a story on page good enough for people to get lost in.

A stripper who does cake sculpting/decorating on the side.

The only other career I considered in high school instead of Nursing was a marine biologist.

I would have been a band director. I played clarinet, French horn, piano, alto sax, and piano. I never would have been able to play professionally - I was never that good - but I have always loved music.

I'm pretty sure I would have had to leave teaching early. Crowd control was never my forte, and the lack of discipline that I see in the kids now-a-days would probably have done me in.

Daaaang. All I ever learned was a little piano and a little guitar. I could do the very basics. I did two years of choir in high school and sang at church. I imagined being a math teacher who subbed as the choir teacher during certain periods. I worked in a daycare for a few years with school aged kids and could never imagine teaching older kids, or being surrounded by elementary kids 9 months a year, 5 days a week, 8-9 hours a day.

My first thought when I read the secretary part was "OMG! It's Anna Beth from Hart of Dixie!" Lol I just finished that up on Netflix and now I'm trying to move forward from it, but I grew attached.

1) teaching English abroad (if I were young and carefree)

2) neuroscience, working in a lab somewhere

Biology and foreign language were my back up majors so who knows
