What are the essential items that you carry in your scrub pockets? How many pockets do you like and where do you keep everything so you can always find what you need?

I have two pockets on my top & a side cargo pocket on my pants.

I always have my scissors, tape, alcohol swabs, chlorhexidine, pens, highlighter, and iphone. Could be more, but I can't think of anything else right now.

Specializes in Nephrology, Oncology.

The scrub tops my school has us order has two main pockets, with an axillary in each - so four on the top. Our scrub pants have two hand pockets.

I never put anything in my pants pockets for fear of stuff falling out when bending, squatting, running, etc.

As for my top, I'm kind of OCD with it. My ink pen has to be in my right axillary pocket along with my bandage scissors and penlight. My client list and vitals sheet must be folded neatly in my right main pocket. I have a pocket notebook that must be in the left main pocket; my iPhone must be in the pocket as well. Alcohol swabs, tape, and anything else is stuffed into my left main pocket.

If something manages to find it's way into another pocket, trying to find what I need is an event. My instructor told me at the end of clinicals that I was the most entertaining student she'd ever had because of this. :icon_roll

I also only use my two shirt pockets... using the pants is just asking for trouble.

I have two bottom pockets:

1. Penlight, red and blue pen, yellow highlighter, small notebook and a A-Z pocket book that I jot down drugs that I come across that I should remember.

2. stethascope, alcohol wipes and an extra pair of gloves

my phone stays in my bag... it's too much of a distraction.

I always carry my wallet, keys, phone, and pocket knife everywhere. On rotations I have the same stuff with an ink pen, a random, folded up piece of paper to write on, stethoscope, a LED penlight.

Specializes in Cardiology.

Pen, paper, alcohol preps in my bottom left shirt pocket. I hate the darn stethoscope; it is supposed to be in my pocket but I throw it over my shoulder. That's usually all I carry- our clinical instructors don't like us to carry a bunch of stuff from room to room- we open new sterile scissors when we need to do dressing changes, so even though we were forced to buy them, they were a waste of money.
