Weird Question: Are All Hospital Nurses Wearing Scrub Caps Now?

I know this is a weird question, as you'd think I'd know the answer but are all floor nurses wearing scrubs caps now during the pandemic?

I graduated just before the pandemic hit, and took a break from nursing for a myriad of reasons (none having to do with covid), so I didn't see any scrub caps during my clinical rotations except in the OR.

With covid, are the majority (or even all) RNs in the hospital setting wearing scrub caps now? I see even the MAs in my PCPs office are.

When my unit was a COVID unit, everyone wore one, even the guys, but a lot fewer are wearing them now.  I find them much more comfortable when putting on and taking off N95s--I hate pulling my hair out.

I started wearing them! Even if Covid wasn't a thing anymore, I'd continue wearing them. Think of all of the splashback that you've felt while emptying bedpans. Just one more protective layer to keep it off of my hair since washing it after work every shift messes with my color. I can also keep my hair in a low bun and curler so my hair is instant glam when the cap comes off.

Yes I noticed that too everyone is wearing one now , doesn’t make much sense when their hair is out in the back

I even wore them for a while as a school nurse!. I had never used one before COVID, and I was surprised at how practical it was to have all my hair tucked in. No breakage from n95 elastic straps ripping out hair, no hair falling in my eyes, and no headaches from tight ponytails or buns.

I wear them. I just feel a bit more protected from whatever may come my way. It’s completely irrational though.

I wear mine because my hair takes time and I don't always want to give up sleep to work on her. Black hair ain't no joke.

Speaking of- Can anyone recommend good scrub caps for folks with larger heads? I need one with buttons and one that comes in hunter green. I have short hair but need to cover it completely. I prefer the skull cap style, but sometimes those run small. Thank you for any recommendations!

I don't know about where to get a specific color, but when I looked on Amazon, I found some that said "Gourd" shaped, and those are like bigger skull caps. I got caps from 2 different vendors (maybe one Etsy, one Amazon) and they both fit me large (cover my ears, etc). Luckily, when I make a mistake and don't get buttons, my coworker can do them for me quickly ?

I don't wear one and I don't think it's the majority of people where I work.  Maybe 20 to 30% are now wearing head scarves.  It might be different on units with covid patients.  I don't think covid is transmitted via the hair for the most part so I don't worry about it as I don't work with covid patients.  When I floated to covid I work a paper one.

This is very helpful, Thank you!! I didn't know about the gourd shape!

Thanks again, everyone. I feel like a scrub cap makes a world of sense.

I don’t want to wash my hair every single day, and yet I know it really is more hygienic to cover it. Also saves time on styling since you can just throw it in a ponytail scrub cap and walk out the door.

I don’t think I’ll buy any until I start on the unit in a couple weeks and assess what others are doing tho.

Resurrecting this post to ask another question:

I am moving to my permanent unit placement in acute rehabilitation & wondered if it would be weird to wear a scrub cap here?

I am loving scrub caps (been training on med-surg wearing them for 4 weeks), just don’t want to be the only one wearing them in rehab if it’s considered really bizarre in that setting.
