4 Weeks Of Freedom

(Another excited student post; carry-on veterans!)

I can't believe summer is almost over...

Only 4 weeks of summer left and then it's back to the grind!

Who else is starting the RN program on August 24th?

Which classes do you have?

What's your schedule like?

What are you looking forward to the most?

What are you expecting the first semester to be like?

I start the 24th. I am so excited, nervous, all sorts of things.

I am starting an ADN program. We only have one class the first semester, which is fundamentals of nursing. Thankfully, I don't have any other classes to take except my nursing classes.

My schedule outline is crazy and not consistent. But, I think it is going to work out pretty well. We report no earlier than 08:30 for the first 8 weeks. Some days we go in later. After the first 8 weeks we will start clinical in a LTC facility. For clinical we start at 07:00.

I am honestly looking forward to finding my groove. I have marked everything on my calendar in hopes to be able to map out my days. I am fearful of falling behind, but hoping I can find my groove of studying, time management, life, and everything else.

I think the first semester is going to be overwhelming. After all of the reading I have done here on AN, whoa! But, I think it is going to be better than I think. I hope to transition well into my new role as a student nurse. I also hope to keep an open mind that is ready to learn!

Congrats, and good luck to you and everyone else starting this journey.

StudentNurse47,

I'm starting the ASN program as well! That's crazy you only have one class the first semester though; we have 4 altogether (5 if you count clinical) for a total of 14 credit hours so it's going to be pretty busy for us.

Today has been the chaos of finding cheaper places to buy books online. I did the math and it was going to be around $320 more to buy all the same books at my campus bookstore (it's basically robbery!!).

I'm looking forward to starting, but I'm also trying to enjoy the remainder of my summer!

School bookstores are very expensive. I bought all of mine on Amazon for right around $600. I think the bookstore price was between $800 and $900.

My class is 8 credit hours, so not too bad. Our program is Mon-Fri daytime.

I just ordered a new stethoscope too. Those are pricey also.

Bookstore cost was going to be $1200 and Amazon/other sites was around $850ish. Which is still expensive. I'm just glad we'll be using several of the books for more than just one semester so the other three shouldn't be as expensive.

I think my schedule is M: 12-2:45, T: 8-1:45, W: 8-2:45, Th. 6-6 (when clinical starts). We're off Fridays and the weekend.

I found a stethoscope I really want but my mom wants to get one for me. She's a nurse so I trust her advice!

I'm in a similar boat. I'm starting a DNP program at the start of September. I'm very nervous since I'm going to be working full time for the first 1/2 to 2/3 of the semester. These 1st semester classes are fortunately mainly online, so it gives me the flexibility of working full time, plus I only need to be on campus a handful of times this semester. I'm excited but mainly nervous of working and school full time, even if its only a couple months. I'm getting married in November so the extra income is necessary.

Someone else mentioned books. DO NOT buy them at the bookstore. Buy them on Amazon, maybe even used if they are the same edition and there isn't an online section of the book you'll need. When done, sell them on Amazon or a similar site, the bookstore will give you a tiny fraction of what you paid for it..

Good luck with everything.

Also. For stethoscope, I HIGHLY recommend the littmam cardiolgy 3. I've had it for 5 years now and its still in perfect condition. I've had physician colleagues use it and say its the best they've used. A little pricy but worth the investment

I too, will be going back to school on August 24th, going into my second year of nursing school.

I am going for my BSN.

Last spring I took Introduction to Professional Nursing (Lecture class with a 3 hour clinical component) (this was the only nursing class I took)

This fall I will be take 3 nursing classes:

-Foundations of Nursing (50minute Lecture meets 3 times a week at 7:45am-8:35am MWF/6 hour (1 day) clinical component at 2:45 pm-8:45pm T)

-Client Assessment for Health Promotion (50 minute Lecture meets 2 times a week at 8:45am-9:35am MW /3 hour (1 day) clinical component at 1pm-4pm F)

-Pharmacology (1 hour 15 minutes Lecture meets 2 times a week at 4pm-5:15pm MW)

-Psychology of Personality (for my psych minor) (1 hour 15 minute Lecture meets 2 times a week at 9:30am-10:45am TR)

I am very nervous to have a busy schedule this this while also working weekends in retail. But I'm excited to get some more hands-on clinical experience.

That is a busy schedule. Our program is never more than 2 nursing classes in a semester..

I purchased a Littman Classic ii yesterday. I have heard good things about them as well. I kind of wish I would have gotten the cardiology 3, especially since it was only about $30 more on Amazon. DNP program, ah how awesome! I hope I make it that far one day.

I start my ADN program on August 31st! I'll be taking "Nursing I" which is a 9 credit class including lecture, lab and clinical, Mon-Th. I just finished buying all of my supplies and books and completing all of the health, etc. requirements...now I'm just trying to enjoy the rest of summer and spend time with my daughter before the craziness begins! I'm expecting it to be stressful and time consuming, I think I'm prepared in that way...I also work and have a family so it's gonna be a lot but I think I'm as ready as I'll ever be. Good luck to all of you!

I start the ADN program August 17th, I only have fundamentals for the first 2 months and then pharmacology starts in October. Clinical start in October as well. I'm so nervous, my father in law purchased a littman Classic II s.e. for me... I received a book scholarship to help with the horrendous price of nursing books, still have to pay a little out of pocket. Good look to all
