I Was written up today for forgetting things I am so upset I can not stop crying:crying2: , I had cryed all day about it ! Long story short I have so med problems and had some problems with my last surgery I forgot how to read some words, have lots of problems writhing and remembering things l also forget what day it is all the time and who my co-workers are and I tend to just go blank and when I come out of it I do remember what I was doing and will do the same thing over and over again .
I was told that the wright up was to make me think about what I am doing ,But how ccan I do that what I truly have no idea what I have done ?? I really want to go back to school to be an RN and I think case mag. would be good for me but how am I going to that ? I went and looked into classes I would almost have to start all over ..
I called an tharpy place today "still sodding on the phone" and got nowhere I am just so upset , my boss is planing to come sit with me tomorrow what am I going to do when she sees me blank out and stair at the walls ??? she will flip out and then I will be fired !!!!
I would love to know what kind of ades they used at there job ?And as for the other question I work doing orders for the va and gov. / millary I was written up for for forgetting to put in the right dates ,and not checking the right boxes on orders I was doing when this happens I get very confused and will just relese stuff and have no memory of what I have done .
Wow.....I am so sorry you are going through this...... But there has to be an MD who can help you. Are you a veteran? Do you use VA bebefits? Try going to another hospital or another hospitals ER when you space out or just after. If your B/P is dropping out there are things that can be dome for that. I don't think that being a nurse is possible as long as your health is this poor. You need to get your health in check first before you consider anything else. SSDI doesn't mean you can't work. There are some allowances for working and recieving benefits. It can take up to 3 years to get approved (although I don't think that would be the case for you) and a 2 year wait after that for you to be eligible for medicare. Call a lawyer that specializes in disability. They charge you a flat percent of what you get from disability that is mandated by law. Your benefits are retroactive to when you became most disabled. You can apply for food stamps and other assistance. But you need to care for YOU first and spacing out for 20 minutes is a long time and sounds seizure like to me. Seek another MD.......whoever told you your MD is leaving and there is no one covering is crazy and if it is true and they didn't lie to you still need to find another MD because that is negligent!!
NO matter what specialty you want when you are done...you need to rotate through all specialties and work a couple of years at the bedside before most non bedside positions will hire you. How will your dog do clinicals? I know there can be no discrimination against disabilities but all it says places need to do is make "reasonable accomodations"that do not cause and "undue burden" on the employer. I will tell you form a newly disabled nurses prespective......."reasonable accomodation" is a very broad term and "undue burden" can mean they can't find an eraser to change your schedule. Depending on your state there are many resources to help you like in Illinois......VHMI http://www.chamberofcommerce.com/chicago-il/3246826-visually-handicapped-managers-of-illinois-inc/ Visually Handicapped Managers of Illinois...the state will set you up in business running vending machines and food venues within tha state of illinois no expense to you and will assist in the management and running of the business while you take the profit and share of the business (my dad used to teach visually handicapped people how to run the businesses after he retired....that was his job.....Miss you dad:crying2:)
Even with 32 years bedside, trauma, ICU, education, management, cardiac experience my last facility wouldn't even let me register patients:uhoh3: in the ED, sit and triage or teach the kitchen staff how to wash their hands...they wanted me out and they achieved their goal. Trying to change the reality that I cannot work right now, if ever again, has been heart breaking, financially draining, and emotionally catastrophic and devestating. So I feel your pain....directly, but you may not be able to fufill your dream.
I am so sorry but take it from me. If you are obviously disabled....there is no accomodation for us in healthcare. When is the last time anyone saw a nurse with a cane, a scooter, a rollator,a dog.....at the bedside.
You know what I mean? I have extensive experience and I am trying to reinvent myself which by the way I have not been very sucessful at so far:cool:.........so for now I haunt this board.
Now focus on what your can do! You CAN find another MD to help you. Keep looking and moving on to the next MD until you find someone to help you. (a process I am navigating myself) Get your health together and do better then figure out what you have to do. Go to HR and apply for an INTERMITTANT FLMA http://www.dol.gov/whd/fmla/ which allows you to take time off work excused when you need it......flma does not need to be taken at once.......it can be used throughout the year up to the twelve weeks.
I am so sorry you don't feel well and are having a hard time  good luck!
Wow. I really do understand what you are going through, trust me...i do.
My sister was born with disabilities and receives SS checks and its only like $800 a month. If she gets a job, then she gets less for SS checks. It's really awful because you CANNOT live on $800/month. She gets turned down from nearly everything because of her insurance. It's awful for her to go through, and my mother and i are the ones who are really doing everything for her.
I had to grow up fast because of it. I've always looked out for her, and raise Hell with anyone who turns her down because of her insurance and what not. So i REALLY do understand what you are going through. My mom and i are trying to make my sisters life as normal as possible.
However; she REALLY wants a job, but no one will hire her because of her disabilities. I pay her CASH to watch my puppy while i'm at work, and she sees this as her "job" so it really makes her feel good.
SO i understand you're want for a job. I am going to be honest, i don't forsee you being able to do nursing, or complete nursing school considering the disabilities you have. Being able to see adequatly, read, write, drive etc. are all very important when your nursing, especially case management.
That being said...have you considered doing some volunteer work at hospitals?? Some of our volunteers come in and play games with patients, sit down and talk with patients who have been there for a while and just want a visitor.
I know you have a guide dog, but are you able to do animal therapy with your guide dog? We have therapy dogs come to our hospital, more common in the pediatric unit but i see them quite often. My puppy is only 10 months old, and they need to be atleast 1 year old to be a therapy dog and go through rigorous training course. But possibly doing something like this would give you something to do that will make you feel good.
I wish you the best of luck dear!
As many others have said, I just don't think nursing is a viable option for you at this point. I would highly recommend that you connect with various disability organizations to seek out help determining what kinds of careers might be suitable for you.
Regarding your specific medical conditions, you need to see a specialist - and perhaps several of them in order to ascertain what's going on with you and how it might be treated.
What do you find "hard to believe" that someone with Disabilities would want to work as a nurse ? granted there are lots of people with Disabilities that just sit at home , that is not for me I love to work and just fyi most ssdi checks are between $600-1200 could you live on that ? I can't !
I don't find it hard to believe, I find it scary that you would consider doing this type of work while trying to hide the mental state that you are in. You admit that you have health issues and that you have low vision, that your not able to see enough to be able to drive, that you black out, cannot remember things etc...
I would NOT want you to be my nurse or any of my loved ones either. I have a daughter with low vision and know exactly what that is like. I don't understand how someone with this condition could be a nurse... I just don't. How are you going to start IV's? Read labels on medications, orders from physicians, charts, etc??? There is a lot more to being a nurse than what your making it out to be.
I have no problem with someone who has a disability trying to or being a nurse until it endangers others and in this case it clearly would!
How are you going to read doctors hand writing and get the right med, dose, patient, route etc when you admit in previous posts your unable to fill out YOUR OWN HEALTH HISTORY!!! How are you going to do I&O's? Vitals? Charting? Placing IV's, tubes, etc???? You would not be able to practice nursing if you cannot see well enough to perform these everyday tasks a nurse does.
Its not being mean, its not thinking that someone with a disability shouldn't work as a nurse, certain people with certain disabilities could. But a disability is a limitation that you have and in this case it would be irresponsible for you to even consider this type of work when you would be putting lives at risk!!!
Were not talking about office work, factory work, etc, we are talking about other people's lives! Doesn't that count for something to you? We all have hopes, dreams and limitations. It is WONDERFUL that you want to work, not to be on disability when you have that option. I think that says a lot, but I also think that it is just not an option for you unless your able to see well enough that you don't need assistance.
OP, I'll be blunt. I don't think nursing is the career for you. It can be physically and emotionally taxing for someone who is very healthy. Add the problems you have, and it won't be pretty.
I know it sounds harsh, but we all have limits and weaknesses. I know in today's overly PC world, it's not fashionable to tell someone that they may not be good at something, but life isn't fair. I always wanted to be a pilot. I have nearsightedness, and wear contacts and glasses. I also love to sing but don't have a great voice. Oh well.
In nursing it's not about you, it's about your patient. Their safety always should come first.
I wish you the best of luck in finding a career you will be good at- I just don't think nursing is it.
i don't find it hard to believe, i find it scary that you would consider doing this type of work while trying to hide the mental state that you are in. i am not hiding anything ? there is no way i could hide it my problems even if i wanted to ? i am tried to find out if there is someway to work with when .i have a daughter with low vision and know exactly what that is like. how are you going to start iv's? read labels on medications, orders from physicians, charts, etc??? i read the same way your daughter will learn to .by useing cctv , screen readers , screen enlargers , i wright with markers not pens ,they also make a cell phone that you can hold up take a photo of what you want read to to you and it will read it on the spot .
i am not saying i will be able to do everything no i cannot and would not do ivs thats way i was looking into other places i could work that would be non-bedside . as for i &o i have had to do that and just fyi they make ao basin that has small raised lines that mark the ccs . and as for charts /paperwork i make my own forms . and yes that day i was not able to fill out the paper work i do not like to carry my meg. or portable cctv and did not have it that day .
ok maybe it's a very long shot but whats wrong with trying ?? my god i am just asking questions about the diffent kinds of nursing to see if any thing will fit me . and some of you are making me out to be a monster ? at lest the school is willing to let me try to get into the program ? remind me never to vent on here again
i know there can be no discrimination against disabilities but all it says places need to do is make "reasonable accomodations"that do not cause and "undue burden" on the employer. i will tell you form a newly disabled nurses prespective......."reasonable accomodation" is a very broad term and "undue burden" can mean they can't find an eraser to change your schedule. i know whats thats like .

That will be a big problem, in nursing school and as a nurse. Get a better doctor, get on top of your health issues, then take a science class to see how you do at retaining information. I rely constantly on my memory as a nurse and do not often have the luxury to write notes down to remember things, and frequently I need to rapidly recall something without the benefit of looking in the patient chart.
