I Was written up today for forgetting things I am so upset I can not stop crying:crying2: , I had cryed all day about it ! Long story short I have so med problems and had some problems with my last surgery I forgot how to read some words, have lots of problems writhing and remembering things l also forget what day it is all the time and who my co-workers are and I tend to just go blank and when I come out of it I do remember what I was doing and will do the same thing over and over again .

I was told that the wright up was to make me think about what I am doing ,But how ccan I do that what I truly have no idea what I have done ?? I really want to go back to school to be an RN and I think case mag. would be good for me but how am I going to that ? I went and looked into classes I would almost have to start all over ..

I called an tharpy place today "still sodding on the phone" and got nowhere I am just so upset , my boss is planing to come sit with me tomorrow what am I going to do when she sees me blank out and stair at the walls ??? she will flip out and then I will be fired !!!!

i don't find it hard to believe, i find it scary that you would consider doing this type of work while trying to hide the mental state that you are in. i am not hiding anything ? there is no way i could hide it my problems even if i wanted to ? i am tried to find out if there is someway to work with when .

i have a daughter with low vision and know exactly what that is like. how are you going to start iv's? read labels on medications, orders from physicians, charts, etc??? i read the same way your daughter will learn to .by useing cctv , screen readers , screen enlargers , i wright with markers not pens ,they also make a cell phone that you can hold up take a photo of what you want read to to you and it will read it on the spot .

i am not saying i will be able to do everything no i cannot and would not do ivs thats way i was looking into other places i could work that would be non-bedside . as for i &o i have had to do that and just fyi they make ao basin that has small raised lines that mark the ccs . and as for charts /paperwork i make my own forms . and yes that day i was not able to fill out the paper work i do not like to carry my meg. or portable cctv and did not have it that day .

ok maybe it's a very long shot but whats wrong with trying ?? my god i am just asking questions about the diffent kinds of nursing to see if any thing will fit me . and some of you are making me out to be a monster ? at lest the school is willing to let me try to get into the program ? remind me never to vent on here again

ok, and what is your accommodation for not remembering things? for the times you blank out? those are serious issues that require much more than a text magnifier. even if you can find a job fresh out of school that is not in patient care directly (and if that is your goal there are other ways to it besides being an rn), you still have to get through nursing school. people without profound cognitive and neurological deficits struggle in nursing school.

you've gotten good advice in this thread to get another medical opinion and to get on top of your health before considering nursing school. until something changes in your health i think it is delusional to make plans to move forward on this goal. figure out the blanking out, figure out how to remember things under pressure, figure out how to manage details.

OK maybe it's a very long shot but whats wrong with trying ?? MY GOD I am just asking questions about the diffent kinds of nursing to see if any thing will fit me . and some of you are making me out to be a monster ? At lest the school is willing to let me try to get into the program ? remind me never to vent on here again

trek, i can sense how frustrated and upset you are.

from the beginning, people have been encouraging you to take care of your medical problems first...

and discouraging you from going to nursing school at this time.

overall, i have found this thread to be sensitively and sympathetically written.

the school is willing to let you try because they're likely feeling that you have nothing to lose...

or, that they want your darned money.

some are also discouraging you because they don't want to see your heart even more broken.

if you're this upset now, can you imagine how you'd feel if you failed out of school?

all i ask is for you to think about what has been written here.

it is crucial that you get yourself taken care of first.

it just would not be good judgment to try at this point. (did you know that a key part of nursing, is using our nursing judgment and critical thinking skills?)

i seriously wish you the very best.

prayers for healing.

i feel that you are going to find many of the remarks quite cruel but nurses are realists and sometimes they see things from a very direct perspective and that is because nursing often leaves little room for error so i can see their point. it doesn't make it easier to take unfortunately. first i would get all my meds sorted out. have you dyslexia? see a linguistics and numeracy professional. you don't give your age so i don't know if you are menopausal or have thyroid issues which can cause many problems. i think you are worn out because you are so anxious and it's almost like you're going over and over the same thing time and time again to no advantage. your health and well being is the most important thing for you immediately. then come the manageable goals, when when you achieve those then take the next step but be realistic. some of us will never set the world on fire and reach our dream destination and the hardest one to convince of that fact is ourselves. take care and be kind to yourself.:heartbeat

just a thought, social work is a degree that utilizes case managers. you can get a basic 4 yr, or a masters. i don't know much else about the requirements, but a thought. also there are certification programs at community colleges. there might be something related to health care out there. it sounds like you like people and like to help them. i don't think it's about the degree, but what you deep down like to do. to be honest, i took some time off nursing and worked in an art store. i liked it just as well as nursing (except for the lousy pay) because i like talking to and working with people. i know you will find your way. thoughts and prayers from me to you. take what advice has been offered here that fits and leave the rest behind. :)

Well, try to take a nursing pre-req science class and test yourself.

If you have these problems, you can't even get through pre-reqs. Get the medical problems sorted out and rethink about your future career plans.

In nursing, we aren't allowed to forget everything and release stuff. what if you accidently overdose someone? or what if you forget someone's critical treatment/med? if you forget to notify doctor of some critical value? this list goes on and on. Do you feel you can make a safe nurse? Please be realistic. We don't want you to set your hopes high and get disappointed after all. There are different ways of helping people too.

Hello :) I am not a nurse, I am a vocational rehabilitation counselor. I have low vision. I have been doing some labor market research on various career fields, because I am in a transition myself (long story, currenlty on a medical leave), but I was thinking about the field of nursing. I was thinking that if I did not have low vision I think nursing would be a wonderful field for me, but being I have low vision there is no way I would consider it... working in an ER and not having the ability to read monitors, blood pressure guages, etc. unless really close up. Not only would it be very stressful, it would put pateints in danger. I came across this web site when I was searching for a story I read a few years back, about a surgeon with low vision who apparently was excellent! I don't think I could pull that off nor would I recommend it, but I am curious and trying to find the article. So, that is how I found this site and your post. And being a vocational rehabilitation counselor who has worked with people with disabilities of every kind you can imagine, I feel for you, I really do. From all my experience, I can tell you for 100% sure that it is not safe for you to continue in the field of nursing unless it is clear your cognitive problems are no longer an issue. As a state vocational counselor, if you came to me for help, I would not fund education for you for nursing. The first step I would take is to assess what is really happening; why you are having black-outs, etc. My first step would be to gather as much medical records as possible regarding your situation, and refer you for a full neurospychological evaluation. Based on those results and other assessments if needed, I would help you with vocational planning. Some people are too disabled to work. Some are not medically ready. Some are ready, but need help redirecting to a more suitable field. You need this kind of help. If you have not done so, and you live in the US or Canada, I highly recommend that you apply to your state's vocational rehabilitation agency for help. You are not hopeless. There is hope.
