Video Taping Nursing Students ?

I was talking to one of our on campus skills instructors and she told me that they are going to try to pilot something at our CC starting this fall.

She says that instead of nursing students doing their skills in front of the instructors evaluating us we will be in a room where there will be one way windows ( instructors will be able to look through the window and see us but we can't see them), a video recording us, and an intercom.

This is how the whole thing will work:

Student (s) come in the room alone, student performs skill on Simm manniken, instructors are looking in and if student makes a mistake the instructor will let them know via intercom. Also, if the student makes a mistake they will have to follow a clinical pathway. For example if Susie forgets to do a step or something else that is critical the client will be placed in " ICU" and she will have to come up with the remainder of his plan of care based on his condition as a result of Susie missing something critical. Normally, if we make a mistake during skills we can stop and tell the instructor about the mistake and start over, we won't be penalize if we recognize the mistake.

After the whole skill set is done students will be able to watch themselves on video with the instructor to evaluate how the student did as a whole.

My question is : Do other nursing schools do this? She did tell me that medical students do this though.

I have mix feelings about this.... I'll be so nervous about them watching me through a window where I can't see them. The only time I see this is when they are interrogating criminals and let alone video taping. :icon_rollThe pros is that It simulate the real world doing beside nursing. When I get out into the real world I won't have my instructor standing there watching my every move and I'll have to either continue, modify, or terminate patients plan of care depending on my nursing interventions that will reflect my clinical skills.

I don't know ? What do you all think ?

I think that this will be great for the school. They will have a recorded tape of your performance as evidence should you dispute your grade or pass/fail decision.

Although I'm not in NS yet, I can see the pros and cons to this as well. I think some students get nervous in front of the instructors and mess up just because of that, and it may make it easier for them. They may be setting the tone for the way it is later, you are on your own, and they help you get used to it.

I think I would like to see myself and see how I could improve. We don't get a chance to see ourselves in action very often (except if you rob a convenience store, lol) I would however, like to know what they do with the videos once the evaluation is done. I wonder if a student could keep their video and maybe post it on youtube... just a thought.

I also really like the idea of following through if they make a mistake. I think its a great learning opportunity, although it may also be a PITA for the student.

Please let us know how it works for you, I'm really curious how it works out.

I'll will definitely let you all know. I won't be attending NS in the fall due to me completing my LPN in the summer and starting the bridge ( hopefully) next fall, but I have lots of nursing school buddies who will be there so I'll keep you all updated ! I joked with the instructor and said " What are they gonna do next have us line up aside one another holding ID numbers while instructors point us out from a line up ? " :lol2: IDK this whole thing is just so new to me ! I do see your logic and I agree with everything. Well we shall see, I'm always up for new things.

They just started video taping our check off at my CC this semester. Everyone was freaking out...but in actuality it was EASIER because the professor was not in the room so it took a lot of the stress away.

good grief, you and i think so much alike......and look out for altering of the tape to back up the instructors, i would want a copy immediately......perhaps mailing the tape, to the school, and it must remain sealed until the end of the term.....

My school videotapes us when we do sim labs.. however the instructor is still in the room and there isn't a creepy one way window...

We've had to taping of ourselves. We taped ourselves doing the skill that they told us to do in the lab, watched it ourselves and critiqued it, and then handed in the dvd to the instructor for them to watch and grade.

There is a faculty member at Texas Tech who is very big on enhancing the way simulations in nursing school are done as a means of evaluating the competency of nursing students in performing skills. It's pretty cool, actually. Video taping seems a bit scary to me, but that's because I'm camera shy and would perform badly, haha, but it's just a new way of evaluating skills. With another person there evaluating you, you can kind of gauge when you are doing things wrong based on how they react or their facial expressions - but like you said, that safety net won't be there in the real world.

Hello.

I attend a CC and we do this as well. Actually, we did this just yesterday! It was a great experience. We are working on the cardio system, and our SimmMan had an MI. It was really interesting. Our instructor gave us a "write up" of our patient to research the night before, so we are familiar with all his meds, etc. We then met for "shift report" and we started. We were all mic'd and we were videotaped. We then watched our performance, she gave us some guidance, and we did it again. I was really nervous, but it was a great learning experience.

You can read, and read, and take pages of notes, but nothing compared to that.

Keep your mind open to it and good luck!!

My college has this. We teamed up with our partner to do simple skills like moving a patient from bed to chair, or checking vital signs, or feeding. (It was first year). It was video taped and the intructors watched but didnt mark. We were then given a DVD of our performance and the assignment was to critically reflect on the experience. It wasn't nerve wrecking doing it it was just creepy knowing you were being taped! The facility is there if we wanted to practise a skill on our own but we dont have access to it.
