Vent: Husband lost job today with no warning

So about 2 hours ago my husband and I sat down to lunch and were watching the noon news cast. Suddenly they announce lay off/ job closings for Harley Davidson. My husband looks over and tells me everything is ok because he has not heard anything. Well after commercials they announce which sites are closing and one is the one he works at. So he is scheduled for 2nd shift today, I assume they'll be telling him and the other employees the news. I just wish we had known before being blindsided by the news. It really has not sunk in yet.:stone At least I know we will be ok but I feel so bad for those who won't be ok. :(

So sorry to hear of this. I can relate....after being on my job for 18 yrs, I was laid off too (was not in the healthcare field). I sat down to try to figure out what I wanted to do next. I've decided to become an LPN, so that is my journey right now.

We are living in critical times. You and your family are to hang in there. Stay positive, you all will be alright.

These are rough times. We all have to help our neighbors and tighten our belts. I'm so sorry this is affecting your family like this!

I've been laid off three times in my life, and I"m only 27 years old.

Job 1: Worked at a factory putting a blade in a machine for 8 hours a day. Orders started to drop for over a year. This was back in 2002/2003. I started the job one day and 6 months later I no longer had a job.

Job 2: I made boxes for 8 hours a day. Holiday orders were down from the previous season (in 2002). So they hoped things would improve for 2003. I started the job during the fall and was laid off before Christmas because they didn't need me. So I was about of a job AGAIN.

Job 3: I worked at a university being a shuttle driver. I started in the fall and last my job before the first semester was even done. They didn't have enough riders for my route. So they were losing money. So I was aout of a job again (this was in 2007).

From the year I graduated in high school, 2000, to today, I"ve spent over a year as an unemployed loser. Now I'm a college graduate trying to make in the real world again.

You have two options when getting laid off:

1: Cry about bad you got screwed and cry about how much the world hates you and become depressed.

2: Say, "the &*$@ with you" and move on with your life. The moment you get laid off you need to be hitting the "apply" buttons on those job applications and not be afraid to take a "loser" job.

That's pretty cold that they would notify the media before the employees. I would be pretty angry right now I think, although I guess that won't get you anywhere.

It seems like everyone knows someone who is having a hard time right now. I just don't know where it will all end. My thoughts are with you.

My dad went into work at his auto manufacturing job last week and was given his pink slip. After nine years with the company, my 60 year old father will be out of work at the end of the month. His plant is eliminating the entire second shift. He has absolutely no retirement or savings, and my mother is disabled. I have never seen my dad so down as he was when he was told he was getting laid off. :(

Unfortunately this is happening all over our great country. I think things are going to get worse before they get better. We can all be thankful that we are nurses and can always get a job. Maybe not one we particularly like but we can always get a job and have insurance coverage. Praise God I'm a nurse!!!!

You are in my prayers for a better tomorrow. In fact, I pray daily for the millions who are suffering now. Just do the best you can and trust in Him for the rest. Blessings.

Update: He came home last night with some good news. He is definately being laid off but his plant does not close till October. He also has decided to go back to college and pursue a sports fitness degree. ( which he has been thinking and talking about for several months ) :) Thank you all for your words of support, it means alot to me.

Like mentioned though, it would have at least been better to have a warning of some kind before hearing it on the news. They could have said something on Monday at the very least that there were plans to close or consolidate some sites and it was unknown which ones. But hey, it's all good. At least I have a great job, he has till October, and he gets to pursue his dream in sports fitness.

Glad things are gonna work out in the end! Everything always seems to happen for a reason!

Oh, man, that bites.

I sweated it all weekend wondering if I'd still have my job Monday - layoffs were announced. I made it.

*sigh*

Hang in there.

Me, too. Our first round of layoffs was announced yesterday. I wasn't one of them ... but I have friends who have worked at that hospital for many years who were laid off.

I'm happy to read you updated "better" news, Mel. At least your husband has time to make plans for the future. Good luck!

I'm glad he has a job until October. That will give you time to prepare and will lighten the stress some. It sounds like this might end up being a blessing in disguise if he will return to school and follow his dreams. I'm glad things are looking a little brighter today. Hugs

to both!! :)
