Unemployment during the summer

Published

I am employed by a school health department of a major hospital that does not have the perks of working for the school district. I am not paid during the summer. How many of you apply for unemployment and when do you have to do so to get it during the summer? Thanks in advance!

I don't know what state you are in but in Texas, if your employment agreement is to work those hours you would not be eligible to receive unemployment.

I have never heard of taking unemployment during summer breaks. Don't you have to be actively looking for work to get benefits?

Thanks guys! I am unsure, due to one of my nurse managers mentioning it. I will check into it.

As long as I have a valid contract and have not been laid off, then no. No unemployment.

Some districts have the option to spread out pay over 12 months to make the summer a little easier to swallow.

No, it is not applicable in this case.

Or, it shouldn't be.

If you are through a major hospital maybe you could speak to them about something PRN over the summer?

I am paid through the school system so it is split up over 12 months, you could also talk to them to see if this is an option.

This is something I've wondered about too. I am told I cannot get unemployment during the Summer, since I'm always told in May that my job will still be there in September. I am also told I cannot spread out my pay over 12 months like teachers do. Just burns my britches. I would love to hear from nurses who ARE able to get unemployment during the Summer months and which state you are in.

I don't think it is since we are still employed and it is a planned break. If you are let go for reduction in force, then maybe? But not if they plan to retain you for the next school year.

If you need extra $$ in the summer maybe sign on with an agency or keep a PRN job year round.

I have my paycheck spread out over 12 months but really it just means I get a big check at the beginning of June and I have to make it last all summer.

I currently pick up a weekend a month at my old hospital job and will just pick up more often this summer. I'm debating about whether or not to sign a 12 week contract but that would mean having to locate (and pay) for child care which I don't really want to do. So I might just do 2 weekends a month or evening shifts or something instead.

My pay is spread over 12 months. I also have a much shorter Summer- 6 weeks instead of the standard 8-10 b/c I am in a charter school with a longer school year. The nurses I know who work more typical school calendars and do not get paid in the Summer either work at camps, sub as the school nurse when Summer Schools are in session, or if they are lucky, just enjoy the time off. Are there any day camps in your area where you could work? Would you consider an overnight camp where in exchange your own kids get free tuition (assuming you have kids)? Summer school?

We have about 8 weeks off and have to be back for some August training and sessions at the hospital. I can choose to not work, but camps are not an option unless it is day camp. I have family to take care of although they are older. Thanks for the input!
