Unemployment during the summer

Published

I am employed by a school health department of a major hospital that does not have the perks of working for the school district. I am not paid during the summer. How many of you apply for unemployment and when do you have to do so to get it during the summer? Thanks in advance!

Non-credential school nurse here in CA, I'm considered classified staff. I don't get paid over the summer, I budget/save accordingly and enjoy my summer off. I think the credentialed nurses do get paid over the summer but not 100% sure. It's a classified staff vs certified staff thing. I am considered an hourly employee and they are a salaried employee.

If you're in a position that you know very well gives you 8-10 weeks off in the summer without pay wouldn't you just budget accordingly throughout the year? It's not like this is sprung on you short notice. The certified staff members that are paid over the summer just have a reduced check throughout the year, they aren't paid more. Their salary is spread out over 12 months. Essentially the district budgets for them. If you can't financially manage saving over the year for the summer then just find a summer job to fill in the gap.

I don't work in the summer; I don't get paid for the summer. It's as simple as that. If I wanted to work, I could. I don't. I don't expect the state to give me money, because if I wanted to work, I could. It's not like I'm being "laid off". I do get health insurance, even though I only work nine months out of the year.

I worked as a Camp Nurse during the summer I didn't work. That would be a great option. Wasn't much, but paid the bills.
