UC Davis MEPN 2020

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hello everyone!

I did not see a thread for UC Davis MEPN 2020 start so I thought I would start this since applications open up next week ? has anyone written a personal statement? I can't find any specific guidelines for what to include

Hi guys! I plan on applying by the deadline but I have two more pre-requisites I need to take (Psychology and Interpersonal communication) and both courses are scheduled to end around 7/26. I know this is cutting it close to the deadline, do you think it is worth applying for the cycle??

Hi Lulu! I'd e-mail the professors of these classes ahead of time to explain your situation. Grades aren't always released by the time a class ends, so it might be cutting it close. Though, if your professors are aware of your situation beforehand, maybe they'd be able to help make it work!

Hey all,

I was accepted for the 2019 cohort, just thought I'd answer some questions. There are 48 spots in the cohort (they may expand to 60 in the future but for 2019 this is what they have) I believe most MEPN programs receive ~600 applicants but keep in mind most people apply to multiple programs. For the pre-reqs in English email the school of nursing and ask if your courses meet their requirements. They are extremely prompt and helpful over phone or email. You will most likely need 3 different courses in order for it to count (mine were public speaking, intercultural communication, and a normal english comp class). For classes close to the deadline try to pre-order your transcript to be sent online right after grades are posted. You can still put the classes on nursing cas as planned without the grade then change it later once your grades are in. Let me know if you have any other questions and good luck!

Hi hdavis2200, Thank you for your response. It was recommended that I take another communication class. However, they said that I may select Public Speaking to satisfy both verbal and group communication and some other writing class to satisfy the written communication course.

I was told that it was not necessary to complete another communications class, as I have satisfied the communications requirement of 6 semester units since I took two 3 units communication classes.

However, by taking another communication class, they believe that this will better prepare me for their graduate degree program. So I am wondering how much this recommendation would way on my chances of getting in.

Good point. I was recommended to take an additional chemistry class as well for the same reason you listed, and I am going to do it. I don't really know how much this would affect the chances of getting in.

@hdavis2200,

Hi! I wanted to find out if you knew how the GPA stats were for your class? I am really hesitant to apply because my undergrad GPA is below a 3.0, but my pre-reqs GPA is good. I don't want to waste my time and energy applying (writing my PS, asking for LOR) if they are a hard" NO" and stickler on GPA. Any advice or guidance would be helpful, thank you in advance!

@ASara44 I don't think it will make or break your application if they approved it. If you have time I would just take something this summer online to satisfy it, then you can at least put it's in progress. If the rest of your app is really strong then don't worry about it!

@kle They don't give out that information to us but I asked a few students and one had a 3.8, one had a 3.55. They most likely look at pre-req GPA first and then overall, if you are applying to more than one program you will have to get letters and write a statement for them too. It does depend on experience, letters and the statement as a whole and probably don't eliminate off GPA right away. They look at everything as a whole. This is based off what I have heard from advisors but they don't actually release their admissions process. Hope that helps, sorry it can't be more black and white!

A few more students got back to me and a few had 3.0's with a lot of clinical experience and research, seems like they really look at everyone case by case, hope that helps!

When you say pre-reqs, are you referring to just the science courses or all pre-reqs (including stats, comm, etc). for GPA

@hdavis2200,

Thank you! That was really helpful! I really appreciate your guidance and advice! Just going to apply and pray! Good luck to all ?

Hi everyone! I am thinking about applying for this program. I took a "chemistry for nurses" course. It was 4 credit hours with a lab. Does anyone know if this satisfies the chem prerequisite? Or does it need to be general chem?
