Trump’s assault on Postal Service and voting is a plot against American democracy | Editorial

Quote

On Thursday morning, after months of attacks on the United States Postal Service and vote-by-mail, President Donald Trump admitted that the two efforts are connected as a part of one voter disenfranchisement effort. In a Fox Business Network interview, Trump said that the sticking point for him in the negotiations over a new coronavirus economic relief package is Post Office funding: “If we don’t make a deal, that means they don’t get the money. That means they can’t have universal mail-in voting. They just can’t have it.”

This should not be a partisan issue. I don’t understand why you have a problem with an organization studying voter fraud. What do you have against democracy?

All the points in the article are true, confirmed by Postmaster General in Fridays Senate hearing. slowdown "unintended consequence". along with Trumps Twitter statement's.

According to Heritage, of the 1100 convictions for voter fraud only 143 involved mail-in voting, the rest were in-person voting, that's about one case of mail-in voter fraud about every 7 years in each state.

According to the Trump administration's Department of Homeland Security, a mail-in-voting-only system is the most secure way to hold elections, which is why DHS specifically recognized Colorado in 2018 as being the most secure system specifically due to the safeguards inherent in a mail-in-only voting system.

Trump's campaign is currently in court arguing that fraud is common in Pennsylvania's mail-in system, although when the Judge asked for examples the Campaign's legal team admitted they didn't know of a single example. Not a one.

I'm all for a fair election by ensuring that the results aren't manipulated, although between mail-in voting and interfering with people's access to voting it doesn't appear it's mail-in voting that's the most likely cause of a rigged election.

Again with using potential, not proven. I do not think this word means what you think it means

I know what it means. Here is a non exhaustive list of proven voter fraud.

A Sampling of Recent Election Fraud Cases from Across the United States

The Heritage Foundation’s Election Fraud Database presents a sampling of recent proven instances of election fraud from across the country. This database is not an exhaustive or comprehensive list. It does not capture all cases and certainly does not capture reported instances that are not investigated or prosecuted. It is intended to demonstrate the vulnerabilities in the election system and the many ways in which fraud is committed. In addition to diluting the votes of legitimate voters, fraud can have an impact in close elections, and we have many close elections in this country. Preventing, deterring, and prosecuting election fraud is essential to protecting the integrity of our voting process. Reforms intended to ensure such integrity do not disenfranchise voters and, in fact, protect their right to vote. Winning elections leads to political power and the incentives to take advantage of security vulnerabilities are great, so it is important that we take reasonable steps to make it hard to cheat, while making it easy for legitimate voters to vote.

I wouldn't normally use the Heritage Foundation as a news source since they are so Tea Party influenced, but I'm not going to dispute the facts on this particular study because it only indicates that fraud is so rare. How are people supposed to avoid having to wait in long lines to vote since there are so few people willing to be poll workers that polling locations have to be pared down to a minimum? Only because of the pandemic did my town have so much voting by mail this year, despite the fact that we have a lot of old timers who miss voting in person. My assigned room for ballot counting was VERY busy this year but only because of the pandemic.

The USPS is an essential American service which is supported in the constitution. Trump has a personal agenda which involves maintaining power, he's already indicated that hampering mailed ballots is part of his plan to cheat in this election.

Voting and public health emergencies are only partisan issues in Trumplandia. I heard that's a real *** country where millions of people can't afford health care, don't have work and are getting evicted during a pandemic while the despot leadership fills their pockets. What a shame.

In Los Angeles we had a radio Talk Show host who nicknamed a caller, Mister Non-sequitur. Once the man said, "I got into a car accident in the rain. We need to outlaw driving on rainy days."

Everyone agrees that the PO is essential, the point is that taxpayers should not continue to bail out their incompetence! Ditto for the covid money that Dem leaders want in order to bailout their cities and states bc of their own incompetence and/or corruption long before covid and now also bc they have allowed/encouraged the rioting, looting, and vandalism (which has also led to many innocent people being injured and killed). The do nothing Dems have been the ones holding up covid funds bc they want all that money for those non covid related issues. You know where people couldn't get the right treatment/health care, New York, bc Cuomo and DeBlaso mismanaged the whole situation (but of course being true to form blame Trump). Despot leaders indeed!

I guess that it's going to have to be OK, during a pandemic, to allow the USPS the same latitude and oversight of funds as the Pentagon and the military interests of the country. Suggesting some austerity in that department at this moment in time is ridiculous.

How does letting cities and states lose enough tax revenue to be unable to fund police, public health, education, etc make any kind of sense at this moment in history? What corruption and incompetence is more obvious right now than Trump's? Just consider his judgement alone in things very publicly known...how many of his very fine people are liars, conmen, corrupt and criminal?

Sure, the leaders in NY didn't get it 100% right. Comparatively, Trump can't even seem to get it 50% right. That affects the entire nation. Funny how the Republican state and city leadership didn't seem to learn a thing from watching NY. Correction, some of the governors clearly learned a thing or two by listening to Trump. DeSantis took extra efforts to make the states numbers look rosy.

Yes, Trump is a despot, a tyrannt, an authoritarian. The evidence is pretty clear.

The U.S. Postal Service is the only delivery service that reaches every address in the nation: 160 million residences, businesses and Post Office Boxes. The Postal Service receives no tax dollars for operating expenses and relies on the sale of postage, products and services to fund its operations.

My mail is sorted out of Philadelphia to my local post office. Listening to Senate postal hearings, Postmaster Louis DeJoy said Philadelphia has over 725+ routes; 200 routes without mail carrier accounting for Philly's delay. That is unacceptable. Thankfully, I've not been affected. Try doing that in a hospital during a pandemic, not providing staff for 200 beds and saying staff must start and end their day on time, no approval for overtime, leave your patients/mail piled up alone until the next day -- that came out during hearings.

Pa. officially sues USPS over mail delays as postmaster general blames coronavirus

Quote

A Pennsylvania-led coalition of six states and Washington, D.C., on Friday sued the U.S. Postal Service and its top two political appointees, saying they have delayed and disrupted mail delivery in an effort to interfere with mail voting in the November election.

The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Philadelphia three days after Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro first announced the plan to sue, says new Postal Service policies were implemented without going through the Postal Regulatory Commission as required by federal law; those policies violate the law setting Postal Service standards; the resulting mail delivery delays disrupt mail voting in a way that interferes with states’ right to determine how votes can be cast; and obstructing the vote-by-mail process violates the Constitution by disproportionately disenfranchising older voters who face health risks from voting in person during the pandemic.

Pennsylvania was joined in the suit by California, Delaware, Maine, Massachusetts, and North Carolina, as well as the District of Columbia. In addition to the Postal Service, they are suing Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, a top Republican donor whom President Donald Trump appointed in May, and Robert M. Duncan, the chair of the Postal Service Board of Governors, whom Trump appointed in 2017.

New York Times and Washington Post - 196 Pulitzer between them. Fox News - 0. NYC got slammed first. To expect that everything was going to happen as planned couldn't happen because this administration IGNORED the plan that was written during Bush-Obama years. And I agree with DeBlasio is a hack and that the Times editorializes in their headlines which is a strict no-no. But the administration behaved as if they were trying to make things worst. We had a written outline which even addressed economic issues but just because Obama followed Bush. Trump didn't even look at it because it was associated with Obama and I'm sure he's jealous of the Bush family because they have class and he never will. But, you gotta turn that Fox off and just be an observer of what it happening in front of your eyes. Fox is not the news! Fox News does have a few people that qualify as real journalists but it was created to be a horn tooter for the far right, not an organization to be involved in serious inquiry. Is a female even allowed to read the news without spike heels, cleavage, long coiffured hair, sprayed on make-up and tons of lip gloss? (The answer is no:) way. There are plenty of serious journalists on both sides of the aisle so you don't have to stoop to document from them. NYC had to learn with no script and they suffered terribly but they haven't had a second surge. Now the Sand States had plenty of data by the time their numbers started going up and they vehemently resisted using any of that data to respond to their rise in numbers because it didn't dovetail with the tea leaves that they read in Trump's colon. None of the pain these states are experiencing (not even to mention the medical personnel) had to happen when even a junior high science student could think "WOW!, that seems like a really stupid thing to do." And what does this have to do with the post office? If we had handled this pandemic differently, we wouldn't be posting on this thread because people would feel safe volunteering to run the polls on election day. Actually, I think it probably would follow the same events that happened at the hairdressers' place in Missouri. When both parties wear masks and have brief contact, it's safe. But I will continue to count only the mail-in votes because I do not want to be at a table with a mask denier who also needs to express his "freedom" to open carry. Nope, someone displaying those two symptoms together spending time with me just isn't going to happen. So you go stand in line and I will mail my ballot in.

I live in liberal California. We are home to an estimated 12 million illegal aliens. It's probably more but that is another issue. By LAW, illegal aliens can not vote in Presidential Elections. When you mail ballots to residence of last known address you really don't know who is going to receive them. At my particular address in the past election I received 3 ballots for people who no longer live at the address. I'm just once example but I'm sure this is repeated across the state. My next door neighbor also received ballots for someone who no longer lived there. It would of been very easy for me to fill out, sign and mail those ballots in for the candidates I chose. That would of been fraud.

When you mail EVERYBODY a ballot to the last known address in a state where migration in and out is common you have the HUGE potential for fraud. How difficult would it be for anybody to complete and mail in a ballot when we have zero checks and balances to confirm identity.

EVERYBODY is not getting a ballot - only registered voters. And another uninformed person said in this thread that Trump has 45 years of political experience. Being President is his FIRST elected position and the only position for which he has run for office; and that would make it NO previous experience.
