Who are these "know it all" nurses that frequent this forum? Are you here just to drive me crazy? I hate that we are no longer allowed to vent about our bad day or complain about annoying patients. Heaven forbid we say something negative or we will be labeled as "heartless" and "unprofessional." Are these people who know everything really nurses? Do they really deal with the public day in and day out like I do?
Sometimes patients need to be put in their place. That doesn't make me a bad nurse for telling them so. Yes I do have negative thoughts about my non compliant patient who doesn't have insurance and frequents my hospital 4 times a week for the same thing. Yes, getting your prescription filled and taking your medicine would save everyone a lot of time and headache... Whoops maybe I shouldn't have said that... that makes me a "complainer" and "uncaring." I guess I AM "what is wrong with nursing today."
And heaven forbid I wear my Tom and Jerry scrub top to work.. That makes me "brainless."
I bet now I will be labeled "cruel" or "harsh" for starting this "hateful" thread.
Oh and I better not use too many smileys!!

So, if you want to rant, let it rip. And to those who object, well I've got 2 words and they aren't "happy birthday".

One of my fav responses thus far.
A lot of very good ones, from freedom of speech to one of the many underlying purposes this forum was initially created for.
And some people just love to argue &/or be know-it-alls. I say drown out the ones who try to get under your skin.
I know it's a lot easier said than done sometimes.
You be you & don't worry too much about the rest.
:nurse:I have said it b4 on here and I will say it again... We r all adults on here and a little debate:igtsyt: aint gonna kill anybody:devil:!! Actually speeds the :redbeatheheart rate and metabolism!!!!!! :yeah:And yes we can even learn from it as long as we avoid the silly name calling!!!!!! :flwrhrts:
I will disagree somewhat. If I am wrong about something and you have the evidence to back it up, I believe it is your duty to point things out. Regardless of your status as a student and my status as a nurse with lots of cool initials after my name, you should point out incorrect information.
If there is evidence to back it up, ok. I rarely see that happen though. I was mainly referring to the posts where I have seen students berate nurses regarding how they handled a situation with a patient or a family, and I have seen quite a few.
i've noticed your absence, and i'm sorry you're feeling this way.but i do get you, about the selective moderation...i've been disappointed in 1-2 mods, but overall, it has improved tremendously.
what bothers me most about students and new nurses, is the (gen'l) perspective that we are supposed to be compassionate, angelic, merciful beings at all times.
i sooo resent that image.
it'd be much easier to be a nurse if we weren't held to these unrealistic standards...
that we are intelligent, competent, assertive professionals that feel compassion, frustration, sorrow, anger and every other conceivable, human emotion.
we are as individual as our pts and the people we work and deal with.
our only commonality should be that we aspire to the highest standards of care for our pt population.
great post, btw.

Personally, Leslie, I think you are an awesome nurse just from your posts alone and I've never even met you.
I think you are probably a great human being, just from what you say here. Quite often, I am in agreement with you--very often, in fact. So yeah, if people misunderstand you and "pedestalize" you...I can see how it happens.
As for the unrealistic standards, I find that as soon as "these" whatever they are (students, new nurses, etc.,) come into contact with the real world. Things change and change fast.
I think you said it all right there. Most of the posts on here do way more good than bad. Like someone else mentioned, we are all still human and it's nice to get our emotions out to people who understand.
There isn't a time that I check this site, that someone isn't offering words of encouragement, condolence-to those who I assume are total strangers...this is a good thing...:redbeathe
It's really not so bad here. If I say something someone else has to make a negative comment about I tend to ignore them because its just that their opinion and not something I care to be upset about. It is pretty tame here. You want to see some mean people check out the legal advise forums. There are some out there that make you feel like you were physically assaulted. This is tame in comparison.

thanks, jo.
that was really sweet.
all i'm saying, is i detest that ubiquitous phrase of (contextually), 'you're a nurse- where's your compassion?'
that this type of label is slapped on us, and stigmatizing us to ALL behave in a stepford-nurse-type manner, is just soooo frustrating and unrealistic.
i'd much rather we were known for other endearing qualities...anything!...except for the proverbial martyred, mindless handmaiden who is eternally mopping brows and remains unphased by the myriad of hostile, back-stabbing attacks from families, pts, coworkers, etc.
that's all.:)

From reading the original post , I have seen what she is talking about. When I teach a non compliant patient how to take better care of themselves, I can really be a pain in the butt, assertive oh yes! But I have worked along side of nurses who would not think to go the extra mile to help change a patients life for the better. Printing health material, showing studies, obtaining opinions from their physicians. Good nurses, but they really don't give a crap if the person does not listen to them, nor will they go the extra mile or invest the extra time. So if you have done all that you can, and still the patient continues to destroy themselves, it is frustrating.
