Too many know it "allnurses"

Published

Who are these "know it all" nurses that frequent this forum? Are you here just to drive me crazy? I hate that we are no longer allowed to vent about our bad day or complain about annoying patients. Heaven forbid we say something negative or we will be labeled as "heartless" and "unprofessional." Are these people who know everything really nurses? Do they really deal with the public day in and day out like I do?

Sometimes patients need to be put in their place. That doesn't make me a bad nurse for telling them so. Yes I do have negative thoughts about my non compliant patient who doesn't have insurance and frequents my hospital 4 times a week for the same thing. Yes, getting your prescription filled and taking your medicine would save everyone a lot of time and headache... Whoops maybe I shouldn't have said that... that makes me a "complainer" and "uncaring." I guess I AM "what is wrong with nursing today."

And heaven forbid I wear my Tom and Jerry scrub top to work.. That makes me "brainless."

I bet now I will be labeled "cruel" or "harsh" for starting this "hateful" thread.

Oh and I better not use too many smileys!! :uhoh3:

I wish I could say I see what you see. Maybe the degrading and attacks are more selective. I rarely post here anymore because of some of the viciousness displayed, together with selective moderation.

Yea it really makes it hard for you to post about your day or a problem you have without getting personally attacked. It is frustrating. I quit posting for a while, then I came back and it is still the same ole same ole.

However, that being said, there are some people on here that are very encouraging and supportive. I appreciate you guys more than you know. I hope you know who you are. Unfortunately sometimes it only takes one bad apple to spoil your thread.

I've been here about three years and it is pretty much the same. There are threads that heat up and I honestly think that is a good thing. As many know, I love a good...discussion even if I'm on the loosing end. I know some take my posts as being harsh; however, candid conversation without the passive aggressiveness of the working environment we all know and love is a good thing IMHO. We do not help our selves by avoiding discussion.

Regarding students, the ability to do your own work and to find information will make or break you in nursing school. Asking for a spoon feeding without doing any leg work is a recipe for failure. Of course, we use our peers when we have questions at work; however, your ability to find quality, evidenced based information will make or break you as a student and will make or break you as a provider. Much information thrown out is false or not based on good evidence based practice. A good student should take most everything said on public forums as suspect and verify that information by use of good resources. Sorry if you get your feelings hurt, but the lessons you learn by finding information will be worth their weight in the souls of people whose lives depend on you providing good care based on the best information available.

With that I do not advocate personal attacks. Yeah, things can get heated and even aggressive, but I try to stay away from attacking somebody on a personal level.

I'm a student. I find this sight very helpful to see what kind of issues I will be dealing with in the future. I will never respond to anything directly nursing related, since I don't have the experience. I think that students have no place responding to a seasoned nurse vent based on the minimal clinical experience they have. Students tend to lose perspective and think that they are already nurses because they have worked in a clinical setting...but they haven't. They are not on their own.

From what I've seen, it looks like some people on here just want to pick a fight. Just an observation.

Regarding students who post for help with their homework, they will not get far in their studies. I do not buy that they have tried looking something up and have found nothing. On several occasions, I have just typed what they were looking for into a search engine and found a plethora of information. The more complicated topics can be found via whatever school's online library. Students trying to get off easy with homework is a pet peeve of mine...

Sorry to get off topic. That is another pet peeve - when posts get off topic :o

I joined this website in 2000. I loved it from the start, but the last year or so I've taken breaks from even visiting because of some people's attitudes. I too am sick of the monotony of some of the posts. I'm an LPN, some of the others on here are RN's. I swear if I see one more post about this debate, "I WILL SCREAM!" I'm not impressed that you have one less initial after your name, I'd be impressed if I worked with you and saw you being a wonderful, caring, and skilled nurse. As long as this is a ranting thread, I think I will. The seasoned nurses on here are not here to do your homework for you. The other day the person had copied and pasted directly from some kind of handout or assignment, because right next to it was a point value for answering the question correctly. I am also sick to death of the "PLEASE HELP", posts that when you open them it's some kind of crazy homework question that you should think about on your own. Many of us did not have the internet when we were students, we had to think, research, and figure it out on our own at the kitchen table. Input from others is fine, but come on, think for yourself. Some of the posts are just bragging, and I'm glad you are going to further your education, but lordyyyyyyyy, give it a rest. Also questions about a procedure or medication a doctor ordered. If you think it is not a correct dosage you need to question it before you give it, or ask someone at your hospital, listing it on here and asking what others think isn't going to protect your patient or change anything. We as nurses cannot prescribe medications,or perform surgery, only drs can. WOW. Next topic, chastising others. I am sure some of you think you are the most perfect nurse to ever walk down the hall in a hospital. You know what? #%IT happens, to proclaim in answer to a person who is hurting in their heart because of some crazy mistake that was made, you say, (in my head I see your nose up in the air typing), I would never do that! It makes the person feel even worse. NEWSFLASH! None of us are perfect, not one of you will get through all of your years being a nurse without making a mistake. We are all human. A few years ago when a topic was done to death, a thousand times the moderators would step in and refer the poster to a previous thread on the same topic. I wonder why they stopped doing this?

Now I will shut up and get back in my internet corner. Have a great sunday, and God Bless you all.:smokin:

For real!! I have a very hard time believing people when they say they have been able to find NOTHING on the internet about type I diabetes. Really??

I've been here since day 1 1/2. And believe me this is about the best this place has ever been, safe, secure and confidential. You went to CU I know and I know you are a good nurse (in spite of my gamecock leanings in other areas.! :) What's wrong? Brian is providing a safe site for nurses to interact and network. I have to say I disagree.

I rarely post here anymore because of some of the viciousness displayed, together with selective moderation.

i've noticed your absence, and i'm sorry you're feeling this way.

but i do get you, about the selective moderation...i've been disappointed in 1-2 mods, but overall, it has improved tremendously.:twocents:

Students tend to lose perspective and think that they are already nurses because they have worked in a clinical setting...but they haven't.

what bothers me most about students and new nurses, is the (gen'l) perspective that we are supposed to be compassionate, angelic, merciful beings at all times.

i sooo resent that image.

it'd be much easier to be a nurse if we weren't held to these unrealistic standards...

that we are intelligent, competent, assertive professionals that feel compassion, frustration, sorrow, anger and every other conceivable, human emotion.

we are as individual as our pts and the people we work and deal with.

our only commonality should be that we aspire to the highest standards of care for our pt population.:twocents:

great post, btw.

I agree with Tigergaile. I think there are 6-8 regulars who act as neo nazi's which led me for a time not to bother with this site. I think certain people (& some moderators) position need to take a chill pill from time to time- otherwise this site will loose more of its fans.

Is anyone here from the old AOL nursing boards? Now that was arough place if you were not in the clique....

As more people come to allnurses there's more trollers and just maladjusted people out there. More people hoping to get their homework done quickly, or too lazy to search for topics. I recommend using the "favorites" option to weed out some of the riffraff.

great post tiger! keep in mind, though, these are not "know it all nurses". they just think they know it all! and of course they don't. most of them are just insecure and need to show the rest of us how much they think they know. ignore them and post what you want, wear want you want, use all the smilies that you want, and give your patients what they need. like another poster said, it's your forum also. :yeah:

I've been here since I started applying to LPN school - somewhere around early 2004ish. I don't know what I would have done without the support and "teaching" I received. I have learned alot from others and have also learned I am not alone in the day to day problems I encounter.

Everyone has an opinion and that's ok. I just get a little irked when someone that hasn't walked in our shoes seems to think they have it all figured out. You have no idea what it is like to be a nurse/CNA until you have been one. Its not being harsh or nasty - it is reality.

I ve began reading these threads back in 2004 and it wasn't this bad(aggressive like) until about 2 years ago. Anybody agree with me it seems to have gotten worse?

Could it be the "Endless September" finally hit allnurses?
