Too many know it "allnurses"

Nurses General Nursing

Who are these "know it all" nurses that frequent this forum? Are you here just to drive me crazy? I hate that we are no longer allowed to vent about our bad day or complain about annoying patients. Heaven forbid we say something negative or we will be labeled as "heartless" and "unprofessional." Are these people who know everything really nurses? Do they really deal with the public day in and day out like I do?

Sometimes patients need to be put in their place. That doesn't make me a bad nurse for telling them so. Yes I do have negative thoughts about my non compliant patient who doesn't have insurance and frequents my hospital 4 times a week for the same thing. Yes, getting your prescription filled and taking your medicine would save everyone a lot of time and headache... Whoops maybe I shouldn't have said that... that makes me a "complainer" and "uncaring." I guess I AM "what is wrong with nursing today."

And heaven forbid I wear my Tom and Jerry scrub top to work.. That makes me "brainless."

I bet now I will be labeled "cruel" or "harsh" for starting this "hateful" thread.

Oh and I better not use too many smileys!! :uhoh3:

I agree with the OP, some of these patients are the devil out of hell!! I was hit by a wash rag once and the patient's daughter told me that the patient thought it was her maid. *****:madface::madface::madface::madface: I was so damn mad but I could not show it for fearing I would fail my clinical.

I used to have an AAO x3 lady that always said "Oh, are you my personal servant again today? I hope you do better than you did yesterday."

It's better that we get out our feelings and frustrations here than to blow up at patients, residents, and their families (or even OUR own families).

Nurses are people, too, and we have feelings. Just because we get angry or annoyed with our patients doesn't make us bad -- it makes us human.

I ve began reading these threads back in 2004 and it wasn't this bad(aggressive like) until about 2 years ago. Anybody agree with me it seems to have gotten worse?

sorry no, i don't agree.

i joined here in 2000 and recall having some incredibly 'passionate' debates.

same topics, different posters throughout the yrs.

when 'we' seasoned nurses suggest for 'you' to get a thicker skin, it's probably the best advice you'll ever receive.

because not only can you either smile or roll your eyes the next time someone insults you, a thicker skin truly allows you to embrace yourself...flaws and all.:)

a thicker skin is so very liberating.

my bp is stable, and i can politely tell someone to 'bite me' w/o batting an eye.

iow, you can't let it get to you.

simple as that.

and it will be simple, once your self-esteem and confidence grow into full bloom.

I work in LTC. One of the residents asked me on Friday, "Where is the gil who usually waits on me?" Now, this is a nice person who isn't very demanding, but yeah, that perception is a buster.

I think its too many know-it-"allnurse"ing students. Not all of them, but enough to make me crazy!

I agree with Leslie. i joined in '01 and I can remember posting a simple question about patient ratios and getting my head bitten off. There were several posters who would gang up on others if you weren't part of the clique. Once one of the moderators actually asked me to drop out of a debate and I started to question myself even though I was sure I had been attacked first. It turned out that she was part of the clique and she was protecting her friends after I started handing them their butts. A lot of that has been cleaned up believe it or not.

One of the risks of posting in an open forum is that someone is going to have a different perspective than yourself and they may not share in your preferred manner. It's frustrating but that's how it is.

Oh and Leslie is right. It's very liberating to not give a darn if someone agrees with you or not.

"my bp is stable, and i can politely tell someone to 'bite me' w/o batting an eye". -Leslie

:lol2: I can also politely tell someone to 'bite me' (uh, well to be honest there can be some serious evil-eye in the delivery) my BP still goes up though, but I am working on it Leslie!

I'm new here, so I have no clue if the edge has worsened in responses. However, I think it's useful for people to vent. Not only does it give the posters a chance to blow off steam, sometimes it gives us all a chance to learn from one another. Nurses do lots of different types of jobs and here, people are exposed to all different types of perspectives. Sometimes it's easy to be irritated or angry with someone when you don't understand where he or she is coming from; on here, people can learn more about different types of nursing roles and the expectations, daily duties, and pressures associated with them. Some people have the same type of job but go through very different experiences and have to face different expectations from management or colleagues. That's actually why I signed up here, even though I'm destined for more of the "paperwork" side of health care - I want to have a feel for what people in the field really experience.

We all need a place to vent where people understand. Bringing stuff home all the time isn't a great answer, even when people care enough to listen.

I could sing "Kumbaya" - would that help? ;) (kidding, kidding, I swear!)

...And @CoffeemateCNA: Seriously? "Are you my personal servant again today? I hope you do better than you did yesterday." Wow. I'd have turned on my heel and run for the nearest closet or bathroom to let loose the profanity-laced rant o' fury bubbling up within my head.

I think you said it all right there. Most of the posts on here do way more good than bad. Like someone else mentioned, we are all still human and it's nice to get our emotions out to people who understand.

When I joined I noticed that I got a lot of responses (good and bad) from other nurses. Now I have to look to see where it is coming from because it may be a student or non-nurse. I ignore it because I realize where it is coming from. It wasn't like that when I first joined at all. The posters who had "nurse" in the name were nurses.

I find that most responses are helpful. When the posts start to turn to bullying or negativity I just don't participate and zone those out. I find some people look for a fight or an arguement over the most mundane things. Just their personality I suppose and there is no point to arguing back and spewing more negativity.

I've been here about three years and it is pretty much the same. There are threads that heat up and I honestly think that is a good thing. As many know, I love a good...discussion even if I'm on the loosing end. I know some take my posts as being harsh; however, candid conversation without the passive aggressiveness of the working environment we all know and love is a good thing IMHO. We do not help our selves by avoiding discussion.

Regarding students, the ability to do your own work and to find information will make or break you in nursing school. Asking for a spoon feeding without doing any leg work is a recipe for failure. Of course, we use our peers when we have questions at work; however, your ability to find quality, evidenced based information will make or break you as a student and will make or break you as a provider. Much information thrown out is false or not based on good evidence based practice. A good student should take most everything said on public forums as suspect and verify that information by use of good resources. Sorry if you get your feelings hurt, but the lessons you learn by finding information will be worth their weight in the souls of people whose lives depend on you providing good care based on the best information available.

With that I do not advocate personal attacks. Yeah, things can get heated and even aggressive, but I try to stay away from attacking somebody on a personal level.

I wish I could say I see what you see. Maybe the degrading and attacks are more selective. I rarely post here anymore because of some of the viciousness displayed, together with selective moderation.

I really hate having to say this and truly miss the friends I have made here. It just isn't the same anymore, IMHO.
