To the girl who was texting all through chemistry class....

Published

...and you're wondering why you're not doing well????? What could possibly be sooo important that it can't wait until break? Maybe the fascinating conversation went like this:

Girl A: Hey, what r u doing?

Girl B: I'm in chemistry. I hate this class. It's sooooo hard.

Girl A: I'm in such-and-such class. Just got test back. Got a C-.

Girl B: You're doing better than I am! Lol!

Girl A: (hugs)

Girl B: I can't wait until break. The girl next to me keeps giving me dirty looks.

Girl A: Tell me about it. My teacher just glared at me. *****

Girl B: Time for break. Gotta go.

Girl A: TTYL

I feel better...just needed to vent a little. I just wish the instructor had better control of the class...is it just me, or is rudeness the norm these days?

I don't know if you could get away with that rule, or not. Mom thought that she might want to someday teach nursing in college, but she's having serious second thoughts after seeing how some students act.

I haven't read the entire thread, so maybe something like this has been mentioned.

When I took biology, about 20 years ago, I had a classmate who chewed tobacco and would spit into the sink every few minutes, all through class.

:barf01: and that's what the sink looked like, too.

Yes, he got talked to about that, and it stopped.

It's not nearly as bad as that, but about a month ago, a guy in my speech class got up to give his speech... and spit in the trash can in front of the room before doing so!

 say it isn't so.

"I wonder if you could mark someone absent if they're obviously not paying attention?"

As long as you make your policies clear at the beginning of the class, you have a pretty wide license. My psychology teacher drops students for excessive absences and if you sleep in class she can count that as an absence. My college's official attendance policy is that it is up to the teacher to set for their class.

I think nursing students in nursing school are more attentive than the slackers who are just taking these courses to fill GE requriements. And those of them who are pre-nursing, will (hopefully) never make it to nursing school.

If I teach I'm gonna be a bad a**. I mean, as long as students pay attention, I don't mind, but I'd deffinately throw someone out of class if I caught them texting in class. I can't wait to be the person who GRADES the tests instead of the one who takes them. I'll have my revenge.... muah ha ha... :lol2:

By the way, I love this thread, its been here for like 24hrs and its already like 6 pages or whatever. I love everyone's comments, they're so funny.

And oh yeah, that tobbacco thing... ew. thats just nasty

Let's hope the guy was just nervous and forgot where he was! :uhoh3:

In our school, the nursing instructors are very tough. If you don't make it to a class on time, there's a good chance you'll be locked out. I told this to some people who are always late and they didn't believe me.

Maybe the instructors in the prenursing science classes at least need to lock the doors on late people so that they get an understanding of what it is going to be like in nursing school.

I haven't read the entire thread but I'm seeing a lot of uneccessarily judgmental comments. I've seen people "present in body only" in class or routinely absent all together who when it came down to it managed better grades than people who sat in the front row scribbling down notes. I had one course where I met people at the final and had no idea they were in the class and they did fine on the exam. I'm not advising that this is the way to get through school, but my point is - no need to assume things about other people's performance in class - just focus on your own performance.

It is frustrating for teachers to lead a class when no one is prepared. As a matter of fact if there are too many fails in the class this could cost a teacher a job. Still in this situation people have to remember who's responsible for engaging the class (the teacher) and who's the customer (the student).

If the student in the original post is being irresponsible then that's on her and one day she may be sorry but it is her money and as long as she wasn't interfering with my work ... I wouldn't make it my business.

The point is...I'm fine if someone isn't paying attention...that's their loss or their learning style or whatever. Where I DO have a problem with it is when their inattentiveness (through texting or whatever) distracts other students who ARE present in both mind and body. The constant texting of the girl next to me was HIGHLY distracting and, in my opinion, showed a blatant lack of respect for the professor. If school is meant to prepare students for the "real world," then I can only guess how this student would behave in a professional setting.

So did you get up and move to a different seat, or ask her to stop texting?

What I love is the students who walk in 10 minutes late on a regular basis... carrying an obviously fresh drink from some establishment that takes a while to make drinks (Starbucks, etc.).

The main culprit for this in my class is also a chronic texter.

(I admit to sending the occasional SMS myself, though)

AHH drives me nuts, and the people who always leave early too...

There is a girl who texts in both lecture and lab with me...and she complains about having a bad grade in the class. Well maybe if you would pay attention in class...

Then there is another person in my lab who shows up late EVERY day and has even been at least 30-40minutes late for exams!! We only have an hour for the exams...

I don't know, I guess because I take my APHY class so seriously I expect others to as well, but I can't really do that. Those people will weed themselves out I guess.
