...and you're wondering why you're not doing well????? What could possibly be sooo important that it can't wait until break? Maybe the fascinating conversation went like this:
Girl A: Hey, what r u doing?
Girl B: I'm in chemistry. I hate this class. It's sooooo hard.
Girl A: I'm in such-and-such class. Just got test back. Got a C-.
Girl B: You're doing better than I am! Lol!
Girl A: (hugs)
Girl B: I can't wait until break. The girl next to me keeps giving me dirty looks.
Girl A: Tell me about it. My teacher just glared at me. *****
Girl B: Time for break. Gotta go.
Girl A: TTYL
I feel better...just needed to vent a little. I just wish the instructor had better control of the class...is it just me, or is rudeness the norm these days?
Different people have different learning styles. Some of us get distracted easily, and doing something with our hands keeps the internal monologue (or SMS distractions) from taking over and allows us to participate more fully.
I get distracted easily, and what I do to keep my hands busy is to take notes. This sounds an awful lot like helping yourself pay attention by not paying attention.

I concur, I get distracted so I make copious notes, even if I know the topic inside out! If nothing else, it helps me to know EXACTLY what was covered in class!
I have had this problem in classes. My psych class is the worst. Two weeks ago one of the problems walked in 35 minutes late, and announced I need to charge my phone, she proceeded to unplug the tv unit and start charging her phone, all while talking to the other problems. I thought my teacher was going to blow. last week we got a lecture on respect and responsibility. so far it has Not worked she had to stop class tuesday to remind them to shut up. Between them talking and texting you can hardly hear the teacher lecture.
In my Sociology class last semester, the girl next to me was texting during a test!! I thought she was cheating; however, when the tests came back, I got a glimpse at her score and she failed the test!!
If this happened in any of my classes, the professor would either fail them for suspected cheating, or would make a big show out of making them put their phone away during the test.
Sheesh. Some people...
Texting in class is rude. Period.
To the teacher it says: You are uninteresting and unimportant and so is whatever subject you are talking about. I'd rather talk with my friends than be here right now. Ho hum.
To the other students it says: You are unimportant and if the click-clicking bothers you, too bad. I am the center of the universe, after all.
I do not understand teachers who permit this to happen. In every prerequisite I have taken, if someone texted during class, the professor stopped lecturing and told them to put it away. That's all there was to it. And texting during a test? Man, that would get you a zero on the test.
I am a former college professor who had zero tolerance for rude students. I would not have rude people making other students who are there to LISTEN, LEARN and PARTICIPATE miserable.

That is horrible..... where is the respect? My instructor knows about my occasional texts with my husband because I explained to her before term even started that I need to have my phone available, but I promised to keep it on silent to not bother anyone. I take care of my mother (she lives with me) and she is disabled... and on top of that my husband has Crohn's disease and lately he has been doing kinda bad. So she knows I will have it out on my desk so I can see it light up... but I will leave the class room if a call comes in... He knows to only text me if he really needs me.... but mostly its a note to ask me to call him when I am on break or leaving school....
So far no one has complained and the instructor has been fine with it, as its not distracting her either.
Now, granted, this isn't nursing school.... this is a VO-tech type of school with 30 people in my class... for Medical Assisting... I know I wouldn't be able to do this when I start nursing school... but that is 2 years off and hopefully my family's health will have improved somewhat by then so I wont be such a worry-wort... :)

*Shrug* it worked for me. I was definitely paying attention, and I got excellent grades in those classes (and managed to take copious notes in addition to the sewing!).

That's good for you. I wonder how it worked for your classmates. The sewing would have been incredibly distracting for me, and I definitely wouldn't have felt comfortable asking you to stop.
Did you miss the fact that I said I stopped partially out of concern for other students, or are you ignoring it?
The classes in question were in a large lecture hall where I sat on the side or in the back, so it was presumably not particularly conspicuous, especially to the students sitting front and center. I also had the support of the teacher.

I did miss it- and I guess I also didn't think about the possibility of classes being large lecture-hall types. At my current school, even the intro classes that many people have to take are kept pretty small. I apologize for suggesting that you weren't considering your classmates.
WOW! I thought my school was the only one with this problem. Here are a few of my pet peeves: cell phones ringing in class (they were told to keep them on vibrate 10 months ago), the ones who keep their bluetooth in their ear under their long hair and have a conversation while class is going on, the ones who constantly come in late (I mean an hour or more) how do they still have hours left?. the ones who come in late and with their breakfast from McD's and then proceed to open food bags...spread their food all over my side of the table and then chew with mouth open, the ones who always come in late and then ask for your notes that they missed, the ones who don't do their homewrok and then ask to copy yours, the ones who when the instructor corrects them for inappropriate behavior tells them that they paid a lot of money for this class and they can more or less do whatever they want, the ones who like to act like the teacher and answer your questions because they already know IT ALL!
Can you tell I am close to graduating? I could go on and on and also have a pet peeve section about the staff but I feel a little better now

In my MA class, I have quite a few girls who talk talk talk talk talk talk. It is quite annoying and bothersome to those who try and listen and can't hear... and sometimes they end up missing valuable information.
I do text sometimes but not even close to those who are in my class. Usually its to my husband if he needs something important. (health related) But my phone is always on silent, and you can't hear anything because it's a touch screen. I even turned off the vibration so it doesn't distract anyone.
I am carrying a 4.0 in my classes so studying, listening isn't a problem... only when the other girls talk does it become irritating. I have complained before and the teacher does say something - but they don't respect her, which is sad.
I hope to God that they do not pass, because I sure as heck do not want these people working in the field, with access to drugs and needles, and sick/dying people. I definitely don't want them anywhere near myself or my family.
God Bless you all.
