To the girl who was texting all through chemistry class....

Published

...and you're wondering why you're not doing well????? What could possibly be sooo important that it can't wait until break? Maybe the fascinating conversation went like this:

Girl A: Hey, what r u doing?

Girl B: I'm in chemistry. I hate this class. It's sooooo hard.

Girl A: I'm in such-and-such class. Just got test back. Got a C-.

Girl B: You're doing better than I am! Lol!

Girl A: (hugs)

Girl B: I can't wait until break. The girl next to me keeps giving me dirty looks.

Girl A: Tell me about it. My teacher just glared at me. *****

Girl B: Time for break. Gotta go.

Girl A: TTYL

I feel better...just needed to vent a little. I just wish the instructor had better control of the class...is it just me, or is rudeness the norm these days?

That sounds awful! McDo in your "space-bubble"???? ewwwww....

I do not understand teachers who permit this to happen. In every prerequisite I have taken, if someone texted during class, the professor stopped lecturing and told them to put it away. That's all there was to it. And texting during a test? Man, that would get you a zero on the test.

I agree with you. I can not fathom a student in any of my classes to act like any of the people described on here. My prof would not stand for it. I just can't believe how rude some people are.

I wont mind if you text as long as it does not make any noise! due to the fact that it will take your concentration away , not mine!!!

but then again, if you think as a group it is harming not only the person who is texting but all of us! once she is going to be stopping class to ask stuff that was said when she was NOT paing attention

so...

dont text!

You can purchase cell phone 'blockers' on the net.

let's say a person just carries one around in their pocket.

I don't condone this - I believe it's against fcc regulation actually.

But i'm sure it happens and nobody even notices... aside from those avid texting types whom are forced to resort to listening to the lecture ;)

I am too afraid to text in class because any of my teachers would throw me out of class. I'm too busy paying attention anyways..

But those who are "problems" are just hurting them selves, and if you think about it, helping us. They're decreasing the competetion for nursing school! We win!!

I think if I ever end up geting my masters and teaching (which i plan on) I'm gonna have a rule that every single person has to put their cell phone on their desk in front of them so I'll be able to see if they text, or if it rings, or anything. If it rings in class I'll take away points (haha, i don't know if that is allowed), because you're obviously supposed to put it on silent at least, and thats what every instructor tells you to do in the beginning of the course. Plus they'll all be nursing students anyways and be determined not too lose any points if they can help it.

It bugs me as a person trying to pay attention, but as a competetive student, I say go for it, I'll gladly take your spot in the nursing program.

If this girl is behind you and you can't see her, and you KNOW she is texting all through class, then it wouldn't bother me one bit.

However, if you hear the "click click click" all through class, here is what i would do, and it wouldn't bother me one bit.

Right in the middle of lecture, say very loudly, "Dr. Smith, I am so sorry to interupt (then turn to the girl), would you please stop texting on your cell...it's very distracting when I hear clicking all through the lecture."

Your instructor will take it from there.

I guarantee it will stop.

It isn't the texting I care about, it is the people who sit there and talk and talk and talk the whole time--so that it prevents me from hearing the instructor.

Read my post about texting...you can take care of this problem the same way.

I'm taking Psych right now and there are two fresh-out-of-high-school girls that just carry on a conversation during class as if they aren't in class.

Wednesday night, I had enough of it, because they were getting louder.

In my Sociology class last semester, the girl next to me was texting during a test!! I thought she was cheating; however, when the tests came back, I got a glimpse at her score and she failed the test!!

how the hell do you fail a sociology test...even chem isn't too hard. can't see why someone would fail at least.

This Sociology class was full of people who obviously were not serious about school. The day before the test, the professor went through each chapter and asked us questions, which ended up on the test. Half of the class didn't even take notes. On top of that, there were probably three or four questions on each test that she asked more than once. The average for that first test was a 74%. And it didn't really get much better than that the rest of the class.

I get distracted if the student next to me texts a lot. I don't mind as much if they just text a couple of things really quickly. It's when it happens really repeatedly that it bothers me. I've also been in a classroom with students who say inappropriate things out loud (like cuss words). We've also had the students who ask lots of off-topic questions, and the ones who talk a lot during class. I sit in the front row, and most of that goes on in the back row. I have had a student sit next to me during a computer lab and she was blabbing on her phone the whole time. I think that it is very immature behavior. It is rude to their classmates and disrespectful of the teacher.

My A&P 102 instructor was very strict about distracting noises. One day in lecture, the girl next to me was shuffling papers around and the instructor told her to stop. The girl did, but not without first calling the instructor a not so nice name. She didn't finish the class.

If I ever teach I will definitely have some kind of rule regarding being "present" in class or just being there. I wonder if you could mark someone absent if they're obviously not paying attention?
