To the girl who was texting all through chemistry class....

Published

...and you're wondering why you're not doing well????? What could possibly be sooo important that it can't wait until break? Maybe the fascinating conversation went like this:

Girl A: Hey, what r u doing?

Girl B: I'm in chemistry. I hate this class. It's sooooo hard.

Girl A: I'm in such-and-such class. Just got test back. Got a C-.

Girl B: You're doing better than I am! Lol!

Girl A: (hugs)

Girl B: I can't wait until break. The girl next to me keeps giving me dirty looks.

Girl A: Tell me about it. My teacher just glared at me. *****

Girl B: Time for break. Gotta go.

Girl A: TTYL

I feel better...just needed to vent a little. I just wish the instructor had better control of the class...is it just me, or is rudeness the norm these days?

In my Sociology class last semester, the girl next to me was texting during a test!! I thought she was cheating; however, when the tests came back, I got a glimpse at her score and she failed the test!!

Oh yeah the side conversations drive me nuts. Unfortunately for me, my lab prof is one of the main offenders!! Last week we had to listen to him and another student debate the state of the economy. How we got on that subject I don't know, but it irritated the crap out of me when I worked all day and was wanting to get home to my kiddo and I had to listen to that crap before we could move on to our lab.

Hey, the competition is stiff for nursing school. TEXT AWAY! It's better that they play around now and exclude themselves, than eek into a program and exclude someone who cares to get in.

I knit in class, but it helps me retain information better. I'll stop if the teacher asks me not to do it, though.

cmonkey - I used to sew (small projects, not big things!) during class for the same reason. It really did help me stay focused. I stopped partially because I had a hard time getting around to cutting out pieces to do more, and partially because I was worried about being distracting to other students.

Oh my! I have to participate fully in what is going on in class in order to keep things straight. I could never knit or sew during class.

As far as texting is concerned, as long as it isn't distracting me I don't mind it. On the other hand, yesterday morning there was this girl in my chem class, who sits right across the aisle from me, that had those magnetic rocks that make all kind of noise as you get them close to eachother. She kept playing with them all through class. I wanted to take them from her and toss them across the room. I have decided if she has them tomorrow I am going to politely ask her to put them away.

Well I'm a texter. I generally get A's and B's in classes though. The problem I have is that I cannot learn from listening to the teacher. The only way I seem to retain information is from reading it from the book. Once I get in class though I cannot for the life of me pay attention for longer than a half hour at a time. I can listen, but I start fidgeting and feel like I need to text or doodle to not go crazy. So I read the chapter before class and if I don't understand something fully, I try really hard to listen to that part in class. I pay for this class because I want to be a nurse. I learn best from reading the book though. I do not think that makes me at a disadvantage for the nursing program because I really do learn the information, I just have a hard time concentrating in class. I never participate in side conversations or make very much noise because I do not want to distract anyone. I also never text if anyone in the class ever mentions that it bothers them, including the teacher. I just need to be told once. I didn't really ever think of it as distracting to other people since my phone is pretty quiet. I guess from now on i'll lay back on texting. I just wanted to give my :twocents: because some people just learn differently than others.

Different people have different learning styles. Some of us get distracted easily, and doing something with our hands keeps the internal monologue (or SMS distractions) from taking over and allows us to participate more fully.

Ok well in my chemisty class. There is a girl who sits in the front row right next to me. She comes in usually 10 minutes late, and puts her head on the desk face down and closes her eyes. And she stays that way the entire class. Now even if you are retaining information, thats just rude. But I guess she isn't since she put her head up for a minute last week to ask about tutoring.

You sound exactly like me :)

Specializes in none yet!.

The teacher in our micro class got his own back today on several who are late consistently, he gave us a quiz at 9am sharp, it finished 10 minutes later, and he would not let anyone who wandered in with their coffee's later do the test!! I am guessing punctuality will improve!

I have noticed that the micro and A&PI classes I am in are very attentive and sociology and psychology are full of people chatting/texting, so next semester I am doing all my courses other than A&PII online. People keep asking me how I am getting 100% in every class (other than micro, where I have a 95% average right now). I tell them I actually listen in class, make notes and ask if I am confused. I do not dedicate too much time out of class to studying, but probably do average about an hour a day overall to my 14 credits. By listening and being attentive I don't need to study so much outside class, that simple!!!!

I'll admit...I'm a texter sometimes.

I don't sit through the whole class and text, but I'll answer a text here and there and I still managed high A's in chemistry and AP.
