To the girl who was texting all through chemistry class....

Published

...and you're wondering why you're not doing well????? What could possibly be sooo important that it can't wait until break? Maybe the fascinating conversation went like this:

Girl A: Hey, what r u doing?

Girl B: I'm in chemistry. I hate this class. It's sooooo hard.

Girl A: I'm in such-and-such class. Just got test back. Got a C-.

Girl B: You're doing better than I am! Lol!

Girl A: (hugs)

Girl B: I can't wait until break. The girl next to me keeps giving me dirty looks.

Girl A: Tell me about it. My teacher just glared at me. *****

Girl B: Time for break. Gotta go.

Girl A: TTYL

I feel better...just needed to vent a little. I just wish the instructor had better control of the class...is it just me, or is rudeness the norm these days?

In my chemistry class there are a group of guys that act all wild during lab, and cheat during the exams. My professor doesn't seem to care, it was distracting (until I switched lab partners further away from them which solved the problem hopefully) and so I know what you mean.

I know exactly how you feel. I switched where I was sitting in my class too... the girl next to me was HORRIBLE .... She would talk very loud during class, and every time the teacher would say something in her lecture, the girl would repeat it loudly and mispronounce words... Then she would sit there and smack her lips the entire night... OMG... I wanted to strangle her. She put her feet up in the middle chair between us and it constantly hit my chair... she would take up 3/4ths of the table... can you tell she irritated me?

So, I moved and I am sitting with a nice young lady who is quite and listens the first time. And if she has questions she asks me during break or after class. YAY... much more relaxing.

I dont text anymore because I don't want to be the "culprit" who distracts anyone. Although you can't hear my phone at all (it's silent and a touchscreen)... but it doesn't matter.

Although - I left it on just in case because of possible emergencies at home... (disabled diabetic mother constantly has BS in the 30's and 40's)... and its a good thing I left it on last week... my husband was driving his motorcycle home and was hit by a car on the freeway. Wow... I almost had a heart attack. He was okay thank God. From then on, I have gotten the "OK" from the instructor to leave my phone on, as long as it's silent. (The screen lights up when there is a call or msg for me to call home) so I told her if that happens I will leave the class room so not to distract anyone)

yes I can tell, obviously. And I know what you mean,

There was this girl that sat in front of me in anatomy class. She would constantly flop her hair back and let her hair just sit on my table for long periods of time during lecture. I don't know how she wouldnt be aware of it, I mean it was obviously all over my table, she had nice hair and all but still it was kind of distracting me in that her hair was literally in the way for me to take notes in lecture. I guess people will always have something to complain about. lol

Are they athletes? This might give them an excuse (for now), although athletes who act like that rarely take classes as advanced as chemistry.

2 of them are. one does track and field, and the other does football at the college. the 3rd one isn't though, he just tries to hook up with women on campus all the time, i know because i see him in the act.

This might of been cooler in highschool, but I'm in college now and I already have a BA degree and so I am so over that phase at this point in my life.

The beauty of being one of the old ladies in my classes is that I feel no shame in telling people to SHUT THEIR YAPPER. Also, wouldn't it be so much fun to dunk the cell phone in the freshly purchased Starbucks? Just a thought.

Glad to hear that I am not the only one with this problem. I have two texters in my class. Hmmm, I wonder if they are texting each other. What bothers me the most is that they text under the table and they think that the instructor is blind and doesn't see what they are doing. How stupid can you be?!?!?!?

There are 50 of us in my Nursing class. NONE of us text during lecture. Our instructors would flip if we did. We have ALL learned to have of phones off, not vibrate, (you can still hear that) before we walk in. Our lectures are long, so we do comment to each other, but we don't have conversations. The dept. has some pretty strict guidelines and does not tolerate disruptions. I love that about school. I have worked my butt off to obtain that seat and to be able to pay for it... I shouldn't have to put up with someone being disruptive. - and really neither should any of you.. college is expensive and as a consumer you deserve to get what you are paying for. Your professors should have or enforce guidelines for classroom behavior. I am so glad that dosen't occur where i am, It would drive me nuts... I feel for ya... but speak up, more that once, and.. if nothing happens.. go to the dept chair and make your concerns known... if nothing else thay can bring it up at a meeting that "45 students have complained of distrating cell phone use during class... "

In Asia Texting is a big. A long time friend of mine that is teaching English in Bangkok, recently sent me an email with a question: "Will this work?" It was a short-range Mobile Phone Jamming Device used to inhibit this very thing. He wanted to use it to jam any texts /calls going in and out of his classroom, since he implimented a no phone use (except emergency) policy. Apparently the thing actually works both with US frequencies as well as Europe and Asia. The texts and calls will come in once the phone is out of range of the "Jammer" which is good for about a 15 Meter radius I think.

Anyway, maybe you should ask your teacher to impliment the no text/call rule, and enforce it with the "Jammer" Personally I think these should be in every classroom...

In my A & P 1 class the instructor has to stop 2-3 times each class to tell

people to stop texting. It is usually the same people each class.

I just do not comprehend why people pay for a class then spend the time

texting in class.

Your professor stopped class to ask those individuals to stop texting...multiple times :banghead:? In one of my courses there were two girls who sat in the back of the class and constantly chatted. About the third week of school...the same two girls were laughing when the professor stopped the lecture and ask the girls if they planned on taking the course seriously. One of the girls felt that she had to become an activist and say, "we paid for this class just like everyone else in here...we have the right to engage in conversation". I have to say the professor's response was classic. She responded with, "I see. Well I would strongly encourage the both of you to do either two things. First, you can go withdraw from the class and get 75% of your tuition returned, or you can see if another professor is willing to accept you his or her class because the two of you are no longer welcome in my class". So, the two girls grabbed their belongings and left. While they were walking out we all began to clap.:yeah::yeah::yeah::yeah:

Is'nt it funny how we can rationalize our own behavior and still condemn others for the same! i read where one person said they only texted "a little" and is still making an A so it is ok. then another person affirmed the opinion that it was, indeed, ok and there was a difference between a small disruptive behavior and a large disruptive behavior. I am working hard for my nursing degree, and i have had to pay for my classes out of my pocket cause we don't qualify for financial aid. i am the person in the class who, instead of giving the look, i request the student show me the respect I deserve and turn their phone off, or leave the classroom. then if my instructor were to choose not to back me up, i am more than glad to take it higher. cell phones have no place in the classroom, for any reason. if you don't have enough sense to give your family school phone numbers so you can be contacted in case of an emergency, then suffer thru the couple of hrs that class takes without knowing whats going on, or if your life is too busy to get thru a class without cellphone interruption, DROP THE CLASS. It's obviously interfering with your social life!:nono:

Ditto on a lot of what is being said here and I'll be glad to join in!

It really curdles my milk when others are talking to their neighbor or texting then they keep asking for the instructor to repeat themselves or ask the stupidest, bonehead questions that often don't even apply:angryfire. I don't care if you text. I don't care if talk to your buddy as long as I can hear the instructor. I don't care if you come in late, etc. HOWEVER, it is just plain bad manners to inconveinence everyone else.
