To the girl who was texting all through chemistry class....

Published

...and you're wondering why you're not doing well????? What could possibly be sooo important that it can't wait until break? Maybe the fascinating conversation went like this:

Girl A: Hey, what r u doing?

Girl B: I'm in chemistry. I hate this class. It's sooooo hard.

Girl A: I'm in such-and-such class. Just got test back. Got a C-.

Girl B: You're doing better than I am! Lol!

Girl A: (hugs)

Girl B: I can't wait until break. The girl next to me keeps giving me dirty looks.

Girl A: Tell me about it. My teacher just glared at me. *****

Girl B: Time for break. Gotta go.

Girl A: TTYL

I feel better...just needed to vent a little. I just wish the instructor had better control of the class...is it just me, or is rudeness the norm these days?

Hey, the competition is stiff for nursing school. TEXT AWAY! It's better that they play around now and exclude themselves, than eek into a program and exclude someone who cares to get in.

I'm currently in Anatomy, and the nursing program here requires a minimum of a B- in both Anatomy and Physiology in order to get accepted into nursing school. Of the 48 people just in my class alone, I'd guess that maybe about 25% are going to pull a B- or higher, and the rest are going to have to take the class again.

The nursing program in the next town over only requires a GPA of 2.5 in the pre-req classes (average of all classes, not minimum per class), and it accepts people simply on the basis of how long they've been on the waiting list. A neighbor who went through their program was always frustrated by their low academic requirements, because a lot of the people who got Cs in their pre-req classes ended up dropping out of their program, leaving an empty slot for the rest of the two-year program.

I wish I could text that much and that fast I need a better phone :twocents:

And they probably have grades of A's and B's in the class too I am jealous....

Unfortuantely you are excluding a lot of good people who would make great nurses regardless of the Prereq GPA... Nursing is so much more than GPA... Also there is no proof that all those people whom dropped out was because of their C's in prereq classes. That is most likely an assumption.. Everyone should be given an opportunity if you pass your prereqs. That single mom or Dad with 3 kids who does not have time necessary to reach that 3.8 GPA should not be excluded. :D

I know I'm not going to be texting in class anymore. I'll just have to suck it up and try writing notes again... Don't know how I'll do it with my 3 hour long algebra class though...

Check out this post of mine from a couple months ago (knitting in class was mentioned in that thread, too), including the article that was linked in:

As an update to my post, my son who NEVER got his morning work done in class all through second grade, even with the teachers reminding him constantly, is now getting his work done on time every single day, without any reminders from the teachers, since I got him the Tangletoy Junior. He's also been bumped up one grade level in math -- he goes to the fourth grade room during math time.

If you're a "fidgety" type person, one of these silent fidget toys might allow you the outlet that you need, without being a distraction to your classmates.

In what world is a B- a 3.8 GPA???

If someone can't eke out much more than a D in Anatomy, do you really think they're going to be able to pass their board exam?

Do you want someone who can just barely manage to pass a basic math class figuring up your med dosage in the hospital?

I'm not saying that only straight-A students should be accepted into nursing school. But if it comes down to offering a spot to someone who gets As and Bs or someone who gets Cs and Ds when there's a waiting list to get into nursing school, then IMO the spot should go to the student with the better chance of completing the program and passing their boards. That's my own personal opinion, and everyone's entitled to have a different opinion on the subject.

I know that can be annoying, but I can pretty much ignore the texting and chatting. One thing that did bother me was the guy in my Chemistry lab. We had to work in groups of 3, and of course, another gal and I were the luck ones who got stuck with him. He hardly lifted a finger in lab! He would either just sit and watch, or he'd be on the phone texting too! He would just sit there and let us do all the work, but I let him have it one time. He asked a question about the lab because he didn't know what the heck was going on, and I flat out told him "You need to participate for once instead of just sitting there, then you'll know what we're doing!" That kinda bothered him, but so what, he probably needed someone to tell him. After that, he got a little better, but still sometimes tried to get away with just sitting there and copying the notes from the other girl! :angryfire

I know I should just worry about myself, but he was my lab partner, so it was hard to ignore. And that really worries me that someone as lazy as himself would want to become a nurse! Couldn't help but wonder if he would make it in nursing school...:icon_roll

:banghead:I say text all ya want, but dont ask me what a instructors said after a class or can you copy my notes.we have several folks that text, its cool if ya want as long as it dont bother me. turn ya ringer off.If someone gets outta hand in my classes by talking ill say something to them in front of everyone. There is a cpl guys in my class that get 40s-50s on test and a cpl thats young that are allways late or not there.they scored a 10-11 on their lab.i just laughed. So to all of you that and it causesya grades to suffer,i say go ahead, and i"ll see ya in the ER,or ICU totake care of ya,and you complain ya dont make enuff from a low paying job. Sorry if i am writing fast and sloppy, but im in a hurry! good luck to everyone thats really trying.:twocents:

The beauty of being one of the old ladies in my classes is that I feel no shame in telling people to SHUT THEIR YAPPER. Also, wouldn't it be so much fun to dunk the cell phone in the freshly purchased Starbucks? Just a thought.

Yep, I'm the Old Coot always turning to the yappers and saying "SHHH!". Who cares what they think of me. ;)

She responded with, "I see. Well I would strongly encourage the both of you to do either two things. First, you can go withdraw from the class and get 75% of your tuition returned, or you can see if another professor is willing to accept you his or her class because the two of you are no longer welcome in my class". So, the two girls grabbed their belongings and left. While they were walking out we all began to clap.

OMG! I love it!

I also can't believe one of them defended her "right" to chat during class! Usually, the texters/chatters who get caught are embarrassed, at least at my school.

my daughter was racking up thousands of texts per month..crazy..i started really zoning in on times and she was texting from the time she got to school until the time she hit the door here at the house...i don't think so!!!:nono: could this be why she was failing her classes...you betcha...i took that thing away from her and now she is on the b honor roll and will start college (early enrollment) next summer:wink2:...

good for you, mom! sounds like something my mom would have done...

dtinnan, I think you are in a very lucky position, and boy would I rather give my family the number to my school in case of an emergency because that would really be much easier. Since high school, however, I have not been to a school where I can tell my family to call if there is an extreme emergency. I really do wish that I was in a position to not have to worry about that, but then again unlike you I don't refer to my family as my social life...they are much more important to me than my social life. I respect your opinion and your view on cell phones, but honestly no one in my class would even know that I had one if they hadn't seen me on it during our breaks in between class...and even that is a stretch for me because I rarely use it during those times. I keep the ringer off, not vibrate OFF, so the only way I would even know I missed a call is by looking at it while it is in my handbag. What distracts a person varies widely and if you were bothered by the fact that, as an adult, I went to the bathroom, I would welcome you to tell the dean or anyone else that you felt had to know. You are welcome to say that I am making excuses and and we could probably go back and forth because we both feel strongly about the issue, but really let's just agree to diasagree. I feel sorry that you feel that someone like me that values the well being of my family is not entitled to further their education. However, I wish you the best of luck in both your education and your social life and hope that you are never put in the position where your family is reduced to your social life just because someone doesn't think they are important.

I think if students want to text, that's their deal. They will most likely not do as well in the class, and in my case that's a good thing because it means a shorter wait list to get into the nursing program! The one thing that does drive me crazy is students talking during class. There are two girls in my public speaking class that chatter non-stop, and I'm seriously tempted to slap both of them, although that wouldn't go over too well since I'm a guy! As long as I'm not distracted, I don't care what they're doing- if they fail, its their own fault
