To the girl who was texting all through chemistry class....

Published

...and you're wondering why you're not doing well????? What could possibly be sooo important that it can't wait until break? Maybe the fascinating conversation went like this:

Girl A: Hey, what r u doing?

Girl B: I'm in chemistry. I hate this class. It's sooooo hard.

Girl A: I'm in such-and-such class. Just got test back. Got a C-.

Girl B: You're doing better than I am! Lol!

Girl A: (hugs)

Girl B: I can't wait until break. The girl next to me keeps giving me dirty looks.

Girl A: Tell me about it. My teacher just glared at me. *****

Girl B: Time for break. Gotta go.

Girl A: TTYL

I feel better...just needed to vent a little. I just wish the instructor had better control of the class...is it just me, or is rudeness the norm these days?

I simply don't trust the school to contact me if there is an emergency in my family. Too many people drop the ball on a daily basis.

Twelve years ago I graduated from state university with over 23,000 students---staff actually suggested that those people with ill parents/small children carry a beeper--as they couldn't guarantee on a campus that large that a timely enough notification would come in a case of emergency. Now I attend a CC with about 7,000 students, and I STILL don't trust others to contact me if one of my children is in an accident, etc.

I will always have my cell phone with me, in my pocket, on vibrate. I do not text---I simply can't---I'm the type of learner that is easily distracted. This being said, if someone is texting nearby and it's distracting me, I will get up and move immediately. I HAVE to be able to concentrate.

The issue is not whether or not carrying a cell phone is okay, the issue is the use of it. Common sense goes a long way for everyone. ;)

I have to agree with that! now, how do we get people to use common sense in a society where the voice of one suppresses many, and the aclu is willing to defend the rights of one at the cost of all others? common sense went out the window when preperation H had to start putting "not to be taken orally" on the tube and Mcdonalds was sued cause the idiot spilled coffee in her lap at the drive thru and she won! (thats why the cups now say; "caution contents may be hot") well duh!:uhoh3:

The only person I'm responsible for is me. If something bothers me, I must speak up/do something. If I am doing something that is bothering others, I would hope that someone would also speak up. We can't make others have common sense....I guess we'll just have to continue to lead by example and stand up for ourselves and what we believe is right, whether it's popular or not.

That McDonald's coffee lawsuit was legitimate. There's stuff all over the Internet about it.

There's a difference between someone having a cell phone because of a chronically ill child, and someone who takes personal phone calls in class.

A while back, I was at the grocery store and there was a sign next to the cash register stating that any employee who took a cell call while working would be fired on the spot. :yeah: If they needed to be reached, their friends or relatives could do so through the switchboard, and they said that employees needed to leave their cell phones in their lockers.

Maybe 1tchr would not have been able to go back to school in the pre-pager/cell phone era? Sometimes you don't know the whole story. It doesn't sound like s/he abuses this privilege.

In Asia Texting is a big. A long time friend of mine that is teaching English in Bangkok, recently sent me an email with a question: "Will this work?" It was a short-range Mobile Phone Jamming Device used to inhibit this very thing. He wanted to use it to jam any texts /calls going in and out of his classroom, since he implimented a no phone use (except emergency) policy. Apparently the thing actually works both with US frequencies as well as Europe and Asia. The texts and calls will come in once the phone is out of range of the "Jammer" which is good for about a 15 Meter radius I think.

Anyway, maybe you should ask your teacher to impliment the no text/call rule, and enforce it with the "Jammer" Personally I think these should be in every classroom...

The problem I have with Jammers is what if there's an emergency...I have children and if something happened to them There would be H$#L to pay if my cell phone was jammed...I keep my phone on silent on my desk or vibrate in my pocket...I'm not in the habit of texting but I dont care if anyone else does...Its their business and if they fail the class then there's one less person to compete with for a seat.

Thanks rph, I have been rereading this entire thread trying to figure out what I could have said to imply that I thought my children were more important than anyone else's or that my situation itself was unique. I thought my message was saying that I understand how cell phones and texting can become a problem along with the ringing of phones and people actually answering phones in the class. I also thought that it was clear that I was saying to be respectful to others and not have your phone ring in class and if there is a call you must take to quickly make an exit. Further, I was saying not to use your circumstances as an excuse for disturbing or distracting others and then said because I have circumstances as well that are important enough to me to have my cell phone but that it didn't excuse me from being responsible and respectful to my class and instructor. I was just trying to say that I disagree with the statement that cellphones have no place in the classroom and I still disagree with that statement. Like back2books says its not about the phone itself but about common sense use. I still don't see what I could have said to suppress the voice of others in stating my opinion and a similar reason to what back2books said which is basically I have a reason for my phone and will continue to have it in class and if need be will excuse myself if I feel the call is important enough. That was my opinion and not an excuse at all and I don't think I should have to tell someone what I did before...cell phones were out not too long after I graduated from high school. Remember those big chunky car phones...over the years they just got smaller and smaller, more affordable, and more widely used...and before that there were beepers. It was just assumed that I had the same life experiences before cell phones that I have now and that is just not the case. I didn't have children before cell phones so I can not connect with the good ole days or remember a time back...and if I did does that mean I shouldn't take advantage of today's technological advances just because someone else chooses not to make use of a cell phone. What would it matter what I did before cell phones anyway? If wanting to carry a cell phone makes me self centered and whatever else I was referred to then so be it, because I will continue to carry my cell phone and have the ringer off and hope that I don't ever have an emergency that would lead me to quietly excuse myself from the class.

The issue is not whether or not carrying a cell phone is okay, the issue is the use of it. Common sense goes a long way for everyone. ;)

I had a teacher that used to say the following: "Apparently common sense is not so common in today's times."

common sense was a publication by Ben Franklin wasnt it?

The woman suffered third degree burns, requiring skin grafts. It was a legitimate case. The jury found McDonald's to be 80% at fault and the plaintiff to be 20% at fault.

Distractions are everywhere. People cough, sneeze, click their pens, chew gum, rustle candy wrappers, whisper, and on and on. If someone is doing something distracting, like texting, you either ask them to stop or get up and move. It's really simple.

In your nursing career, you will encounter constant interruption and distraction every single day. You will have IV pumps beeping, your phone ringing, patients and family members asking questions, CNAs reporting information, doctors wanting to talk to you, all while you are trying to concentrate. These things are NOT going to stop because *the nurse is trying to concentrate*. You have to learn how to manage your environment when you can, and tune out the distractions when you can't. Why not start practicing now, while you are still in an environment where all that is expected of you is that you listen to the instructor talk? Nobody's expecting their medications, nobody's asking you when the doctor will come, nobody needs a new IV, nobody's in pain, nobody's having shortness of breath....all you have to do is focus on the lecture.

Life is full of "shoulds". What people should do. How people should behave. The fact is, people will do what they do. You can go around focusing on what everyone else is doing, or worry about yourself.

Geesh...I couldn't find the end of this thread LOL!...I'm an older student so I just thought that it was me being irritated by the much younger students but I guess that I am not alone and overreacting but I have a story...There is a girl who comes into class 10 to 15 minutes late if she even decides to come in at all....The class is 50 minutes why she even bothers I don't know. She will come in with her IPOD up loud enough that we can hear it. On a test day she came in 15 minutes late, got her test, IPOD music on, sat right next to me, started her test....I looked up just in time enough to see her COPYING OFF OF MY TEST!!! I was so ******! I am not a snitch...But was that day because I did tell! :angryfire

Are her parents aware that she is wasting college fund money?

Oh, I don't know that for sure, but it's a pretty safe bet that's what's going on. College instructors have a very good eye for who wants to be there, and who's there because their parents made them go to college, or because it's a party school, or whatever.
