...and you're wondering why you're not doing well????? What could possibly be sooo important that it can't wait until break? Maybe the fascinating conversation went like this:
Girl A: Hey, what r u doing?
Girl B: I'm in chemistry. I hate this class. It's sooooo hard.
Girl A: I'm in such-and-such class. Just got test back. Got a C-.
Girl B: You're doing better than I am! Lol!
Girl A: (hugs)
Girl B: I can't wait until break. The girl next to me keeps giving me dirty looks.
Girl A: Tell me about it. My teacher just glared at me. *****
Girl B: Time for break. Gotta go.
Girl A: TTYL
I feel better...just needed to vent a little. I just wish the instructor had better control of the class...is it just me, or is rudeness the norm these days?
I thought it was just my being 36 in a class of 20 somethings. These people not only text during lecture they hold conversations with each other, they do not even bother to try and whisper. I have never seen such rude attitude!! Unfortunately, the professors that I have had say nothing to them. I am not saying that it is because they are young, I am sure some older folk do it too, it just drives me insane!
LOL I've come across these people in my pre-req classes too. Guess what chances are these are the ones who won't make it. And you are right, it's very rude. We've had gum snappers, talkers, txt'rs, cheaters. Each prof has their own way of handling this. I've seen some go into a 15 minute rampage, while others let the classmates sitting nearby tell the offender off. Some of these classes have 70 students or more in them, so I can see why some profs flip out.

YES! I just took Chem last semester and my professor had all but thrown in the towel on controlling the class. It was ridiculous. Texting, cheating, talking throughout lectures and labs...I saw it all. I think he did too, but didn't do anything much to stop it. What a surprise (not) it was to learn that he was short-timing it for the next 2-3 years when he planned to retire. I couldn't wait to get out of that class. Chemistry is hard enough to study without all the distractions of rude and disinterested classmates!
Ok well in my chemisty class. There is a girl who sits in the front row right next to me. She comes in usually 10 minutes late, and puts her head on the desk face down and closes her eyes. And she stays that way the entire class. Now even if you are retaining information, thats just rude. But I guess she isn't since she put her head up for a minute last week to ask about tutoring.
I had this in my chemistry class as well. The only difference is that the offender was male. He often appeared to be sound asleep.
Did he really think that the teacher would not find this rude??? Talk about clueless.

I love what you've said. My mom always tells me that as I get older I will learn to grow a pair and confront people that deserve confronting...such as those that text loudly during class.
A girl was texting during bio-ethics yesterday and I wanted to say something to her but I didn't want to confront her while the teacher was talking. Next Wednesday before class starts I am going to ask her if she can move to the back of the classroom and/or turn the button sounds off on her iPhone. I don't care who texts during class or what their grades are, I just don't want to hear it. Ever if she turned off the button sounds I could hear her nails tapping away against the screen. UGH!
I think people that have a problem sitting still and paying attention in class should either take the class online or read/make notecards during class...
