The abortion law builds on legislation passed in 2010 that represented a major shift for a traditionally Catholic country, transforming Spain into one of the most progressive countries in Europe on reproductive rights. Spain's constitutional court last week rejected a challenge by the right-wing Popular Party against allowing abortions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.

The debate will be heated in Spain, I imagine, as the conservative opposition pushes back. My daughter had horrible menstrual pain during her adolescence and young adulthood.  I'm certain that she would have benefitted from that time.

What about this? US removal of panels honoring Black soldiers at WWII cemetery in the Netherlands draws backlash - ABC News https://share.Google/EWLIqnxFJS33DyASZ

What should we think about this? I think it's racism in action.  What do you think?

I  posted about this on December 31st but I think there is so much going on in America politically that interfering with history comes under the heading "Mehhh!" Just something else to add to the ongoing stuff.

"We have never believed that any country can act as the world's police, nor do we accept that any nation can claim to be the world's judge," Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi told his Pakistani counterpart during a meeting in Beijing on Sunday, referring to "sudden developments in Venezuela" without directly mentioning the United States.

"The sovereignty and security of all countries should be fully protected under international law," Wang added, in his first remarks since images of the 63-year-old Maduro blindfolded and handcuffed on Saturday stunned the world.

Analysts note China, the world's second-largest economy and leading global trading partner, will be crucial in marshalling criticism of Washington's actions.

"There isn't much in the way of material support that China can offer Venezuela at this time, but rhetorically, Beijing will be very important when it leads the effort at the UN and with other developing countries to rally opinion against the U.S.," said Eric Olander, co-founder of the China-Global South Project.

"What we've seen in the cases of Zimbabwe and Iran, both sanctioned by the West, is that China demonstrates its commitment to these relationships through trade and investment, even under difficult circumstances," he added.

It shouldn't be hard to rally opinion against the country that threw away food rather distribute it and that cut funding for programming that helped other people.  We created distress and China has been stepping in to help people.  Rallying against Trump policy will be easy.

Kind of like the plans for honoring Civil Rights leaders and suffragettes from commemorating coins have been removed.

But we might get a Trump $1 coin.  That would be cool.

Do you think we should wait to die before we mint a coin to memorialize his presidency?

Oh boy.  Both China and Russia lectured the USA on this attack on Venezuela. The UN sees and describes Trump's actions as threatening to peace in the region because the actions were reckless and careless and lacked any principles commonly held by the members.

I wonder if this is going the way the White House imagined.

Good morning all, I am going to change direction on this thread for one post.

I know it is a bit late but I just saw Idris Elba on the news talking about his latest work and it reminded me of this;

Stringer Bell (from The Wire) has received a Knighthood in the New Year honours list. So I wonder if he will be known as Sir Stringer or - much more likely and more legally - just go with Sir Idris?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c3v15zkxpe0o

PS, I know the answer, he is Sir Idris Elba. Who knows, he may be the next James Bond. I would support that.

Take care all.

He should be the next Bond.  He's definitely got the resume. His place in that contest for the role definitely inflamed some racists though.

He's not wrong.  We are too big and powerful for any to stop us from taking Greenland.  It would probably be bloodless.  We'd just walk in, dispose of the government there and say we're in charge.

NATO exists under the agreement that if one NATO country is attacked we all come to their defense.  I wonder how it's going to work when a NATO country attacks another NATO country?  Obviously there would be no NATO after we take Greenland.

With Miller's wife posting a map of Greenland covered in the Stars and Stripes with the caption "soon" and Trump saying wait 20 days and we'll talk about Greenland, I can see them getting a bit nervous.

The problem is Greenland is an ally.  They let us build a base there.  Denmark who retains control of the sovereign state of Greenland is an ally too who agreed to more US bases there.  There is no need to control Greenland.  They are cooperating with us.  As far as their mineral wealth, as our ally the would trade with us willingly over our adversaries.
Yes, China and Russia has ships nearby, but not that close.  What are we going to do about that.

I can understand why the US has eyeballed the area over the years, but it seems like a terrible idea to destroy our relationship with NATO when we can just build on what was a cordial and cooperative relationship.

Any "taking" of Greenland is actually going to be a mutual agreement of some kind.

We didn't even take Venezuela.  We arrested a dictator who had been indicted and will now face criminal charges.   While we disagree to how much extent, oil was a factor to some degree.  While some plans aren't clear, keeping Venezuela isn't the end goal.

The narrative being talked about that Greenland is next, as if it's an apples to apples scenerio, is ridiculous.

Visited Philadelphia Mint last year -- my dad and son collect coins.  A centuries-old U.S. law forbids the image of any living person from appearing on the U.S nation's currency.  Usually U.S. Commemorative coins minted just at Philadelphia.

Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 established the American Women Quarters Program and permits $1 dollar coins for the semiquincentennial year 2026.

Quote

Sec. 2) This bill requires the Department of the Treasury to issue, beginning January 1, 2022, quarter-dollar coins in commemoration of the accomplishments and contributions of up to five prominent American women per year.

(Sec. 3) Treasury may issue quarter dollars, beginning January 1, 2026, with up to five different designs emblematic of the U.S. semiquincentennial. One of the quarter dollar designs must be emblematic of a woman's or women's contribution to the birth of the nation or the Declaration of Independence or any other monumental moments in American history. Treasury may, in addition to the coins honoring Native Americans and honoring innovation and innovators, mint for issuance during the one-year period beginning January 1, 2026, $1 dollar coins with designs emblematic of the U.S. semiquincentennial.

...(Sec. 6) No head and shoulders portrait or bust of any person, living or dead, and no portrait of a living person may be included in the design on the reverse of specified coins.

Coinweek: Trump $1 Semiquincentennial Coin: Facts, Law, and the Coolidge Precedent

Treasury officials have stated clearly that this proposed dollar is intended as a collector coin, not a general-circulation issue.

Commemorative coin section lists only FIFA coins this week. Trump coin not yet showing up.

One can view the U.S mint coin releases for scheduled for 2026: https://www.usmint.gov/coins/coin-programs/semiquincentennial/

I have a remind me set for https://www.usmint.gov/uncirculated-coin-set-2026-26RJ.html , getting Denver and Philadelphia.

Cherrish 1896 $1 dollar coin given to me by my paternal grandmother-her birth year.
