The abortion law builds on legislation passed in 2010 that represented a major shift for a traditionally Catholic country, transforming Spain into one of the most progressive countries in Europe on reproductive rights. Spain's constitutional court last week rejected a challenge by the right-wing Popular Party against allowing abortions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.

The debate will be heated in Spain, I imagine, as the conservative opposition pushes back. My daughter had horrible menstrual pain during her adolescence and young adulthood.  I'm certain that she would have benefitted from that time.

World Pride is in Washington, DC and is receiving funding and support from DC and past events have brought in tens of millions of dollars to host cities.  They say "an event that celebrates diversity, equality and love on a global scale.”

Canada has said they won't participate and some sponsors are dropping out.

The economic consequences of fascist leadership can be far reaching.

The Canadian dollar strengthened to a two-month high against its U.S. counterpart on Thursday as U.S. bond yields declined and a key level of support for the American currency gave way.

The loonie was trading 0.5% higher at 1.4235 per U.S. dollar, or 70.25 U.S. cents, after touching its strongest intraday level since December 13 at 1.4211.

"Today's move lower in U.S. yields has weakened the USD across the board, thereby allowing CAD to post gains," said George Davis, chief technical strategist at RBC Capital Markets.

Chaos and confusion aren't helping our economy, it seems.

Weren't you complaining about the stock market suffering a few weeks ago?  What's the latest on that?

Complaining?  Hahaha

That's quite some wild speculation.

It is exactly the position he straddled in his hearings.  MY family had the vaccine but they aren't exactly safe either because it needs no testing. He's having it both ways.

The Canadian dollar was really pretty low and increasing to "two month high" wouldn't be impressive.  The low Canadian dollar and our high insurance costs are one of the reasons the market is flooded with Canadian snowbirds wanting to sell their Winter condos here (not to mention they don't like Trump and are soured on America in general).

The stock market seemed to have a good week.

January wasn't all that great in other areas such as inflation being stubborn, retail sales dropping more than expected after Christmas, jobs added less than expected.  So the news isn't all that rosy.  Trump was President 10 days of January so it all doesn't rest on his administration but his becoming President was looming and having an affect.
But you can't take ups and downs and make harsh judgements.  You can't take a bad stock market week and point a finger because the next week may be better.

Gas here was $2.99 which is relatively low from a few days ago.  Fortunately I don't eat eggs but I do have look for BOGO sales and ways to keep grocery spending low.  The two major energy companies just got approval from the state to increase prices averaging $30 a month for customers.  Things are not looking good to me in many areas.

There are some variables out there for the long term economic outlook such as tariffs, lay offs and austerity, and how much spending the administration does, interest rates, energy prices.  Overall, I don't think we're starting out on strong footing and any optimism I might have had a few months ago is a bit more shaky now.

Two of the three major global credit ratings agencies have stripped the U.S. federal government of its once top-tier rating, citing continued brinkmanship over government shutdowns and the congressionally imposed debt ceiling. Rising yields in the bond market have also revealed investor worries about Trump's economic agenda.

Asked about independent analyses that say the tax cut extension could add $4.8 trillion to the nation's debt over a decade, Crapo, of Idaho, replied: "It's a mathematical calculation based on assumptions that we're saying are invalid."

Quote

The change of assumptions is needed because Republicans -- who hold narrow majorities in both chambers of Congress -- want to pass the tax cuts using a maneuver that bypasses Senate Democrats. Under Senate rules, bills handled in that way cannot add to the federal deficit beyond a 10-year window.

It looks like congressional Republicans won't want to be held to the same standards as they hold democrats to in crafting legislation.  That's not surprising.

Here we are back looking at Idaho republican legislative interests.

Quote

A bill that originally aimed to ban pride flags in schools and on government property was amended Thursday night — hours after sponsor Rep. Trevor Lee said the legislation would let schools display Nazi and Confederate flags in some instances — to allow flags part of a public school district or charter school's approved educational curriculum to be displayed in a classroom.

The guy hung up on the interviewer when asked to clary his thinking.

The changes to the bill come after The Salt Lake Tribune reported that the Layton Republican said in a hearing Thursday that the legislation that would allow teachers to display Nazi and Confederate flags in the classroom. "There are instances where in classrooms, you have curriculum that is needed to use flags such as World War II, Civil War,” he said. "You may have a Nazi flag. You may have a Confederate flag, and so you are allowed to display those flags for the purpose of those lesson plans if it's part of the curriculum, and that is okay.”

Basically Republicans are looking to fully cut the annual budget of Medicaid in the next 9 years.  They apparently want to run both programs on half the money.

This will be interesting.

In addition to the folks who need Medicaid funding for their healthcare, we need to consider how our own paychecks will be hit. Where do you think that money came from? FAFO, folks.

Cui bono? Certainly not the healthcare workforce.

CANANDAIGUA, NY (AP) — New York State Police charged five people Friday with murder in the killing of a missing man who authorities said died following repeated acts of violence and torture for more than a month by multiple individuals who later discarded his body in a field.

The victim, Sam Nordquist, a 24-year-old transgender man originally from Minnesota, was reported missing on Feb. 9. Police said he arrived in New York in September and had lost contact with loved ones.

Major Kevin Sucher, commander of the state police troop that includes the Finger Lakes region, said the facts and circumstances of the case were "beyond depraved" and "by far the worst" homicide investigation the office has ever been part of.

"No human being should have to endure what Sam endured,” he said, during televised news conference. Police did not share many details of the case, noting it remained under active investigation.

I guess that those killers had some beef with a transman and decided that it would be fun to torture and kill him.  Maybe that rhetoric should be toned down somewhat.
