The abortion law builds on legislation passed in 2010 that represented a major shift for a traditionally Catholic country, transforming Spain into one of the most progressive countries in Europe on reproductive rights. Spain's constitutional court last week rejected a challenge by the right-wing Popular Party against allowing abortions in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.

The debate will be heated in Spain, I imagine, as the conservative opposition pushes back. My daughter had horrible menstrual pain during her adolescence and young adulthood.  I'm certain that she would have benefitted from that time.

but how do they justify it to their constituents? Is it because only persons of color, and nonbelievers are poor? I thought more whites received Medicaid than persons of color.

But, thanks to the long-term assault (since at least the 70s) on public education, many of those constituents are either functionally illiterate or unable to reason clearly. Do you remember the controversy in Texas over a GOP platform plank about critical thinking? There are several sides to that story, but worth looking at.

"Armored Tesla" forecast to win $400 million State Department contract after Trump's election, government document shows

Nothing to see here... just the federal government shoveling huge contracts to Musk while he shuts down services to poor and vulnerable people and eyeballs social security payments.

I know that the media is framing this as increased transparency and accountability.  It doesn't look or feel transparent to me.  Does it to you?

Haven't you heard the justifications?  The constituents believe that DOGE  is rooting out fraud and waste.  They apparently believe that dedicated Inspector Generals were part of the fraud and waste. The Republicans have convinced their constituents of some things that are not true.  They've convinced them that an unelected billionaire and his small group of programmers and hackers (but no forensic accountants) should have access to all of the federal data for all institutions or agencies. They've convinced their constituents that we should all trust and believe two of the most prolific and greedy liars of our lifetimes.  One of them is evena proven and adjudicated fraudster.  (Those Republicans only believe in the courts or elections if they win)

Trump has definitely tapped into the racism and misogyny that exists in our country. When the younger fascists push Trump aside, that consolidation of disparate grievances will begin to fall apart unless another public personality steps into that cult leadership position and can stabilize the animus.  I don't think that person is JD Vance and it's not clear that Trump thinks it is either.

It is worth looking at the elements of this right wing journey to fascism.

Texas republican politics seems to be rooted in lies, animus, and propaganda with a dose of cruel accountability for others thrown in.  Here's an example.

I thought it was interesting at near the end they talked about how to punish "minor women." Minor women.  They don't want to call them teenagers or children when talking about unwanted pregnancy.  They did highlight the Texas laws which allow them to charge minor women with murder should they seek an abortion.

There's so much we could talk about.

Words of wisdom from president Lincoln.

I thought with MTG chairing, and the Dems trying to make it about Musk, that there'd be a lot of chatter here about the hearing yesterday.

I guess not.

"Democrats sought to cast the subcommittee — a complementary effort to the so-called Department of Government Efficiency led by Elon Musk — as an extension of what they see as a corrupt executive branch plot to destroy the federal bureaucracy. But Republicans largely sidestepped those attacks, arguing they were in the business of eliminating government waste while Democrats had little interest in engaging earnestly on the subject."

Can someone explain to me like I'm a five year old, why Republicans want to cut healthcare and food stamp from poor people and children, in order to extend tax cuts to millionaires and billionaires?

Because Billionaires earn their money and we shouldn't steal it from them and they are job creators.

Plus we need money for our new territory in Gaza.

A man, who claims to be a doctor, tells Mr Veifer that he "has beautiful eyes" but adds "I'm sorry you're Israeli" before saying he sends Israelis to Jahannam - an Islamic place akin to hell.

He goes on to make a throat-slitting gesture, before a woman comes on screen and says that "one day" Mr Veifer's "time will come" and that he will die, later adding that she won't treat Israelis.

"I won't treat them, I will kill them," she says.

The first study on the H5N1 bird flu outbreak from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to make it to publication under the Trump administration came out Thursday.

The journal released data suggesting some spillovers from dairy cattle into humans have gone undetected, including in states where dairy herds have not tested positive.

This comes after a freeze in external communications that interrupted the agency's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, or MMWR, a mainstay of public health communication. Publication on other topics resumed last week.

In the new study, researchers analyzed blood samples collected from 150 veterinarians who worked with cattle around the country and found that three of them had antibodies to the H5N1 virus, indicating recent infections. None recalled having any influenza-like symptoms or conjunctivitis. They also did not care for any cattle with known or suspected infections, although one did work with infected poultry.

The findings underscore the difficulty of detecting and controlling human infections based on whether or not a person seeks out medical care, says Gregory Gray, an infectious disease epidemiologist at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston.

"If the circulating H5 viruses become more transmissible between humans, we are not going to be able to control transmission as the viruses will spread rapidly and often subclinically," says Gray.

Interesting.

"Trump's Riviera Plan for Gaza was first proposed in 1953 by the US and UK, and supported by the UN. Managing a population of 150,000 in Gaza, UNRWA planned to build a new city in Egypt's Sinai to relocate Gaza residents. Water for the new city would have been diverted from River Nile. The US and World Bank would have spent $30 million to fund water diversion, and also fund building the Aswan Dam for Egypt, whose leader Gamal Abdul-Nasser was fully on board with this plan"

No one knows why Nasser said he wanted the Gazans to resettle in Egypt.  But he knew he could use them in creating more numbers of Arabs for a  unified Arab state and said  as much to a journalist.  They were pawns.  And then Nassar and the Soviets collaborated to create the PLO which did nothing for the Gazans but gave Nassar full control of the PLO.  End the end, he never accept the Gazan refugees in Egypt except in temporary camps along the border.   An advisor to Roosevelt proposed before allowing Jewish refugee into the USA, that the Jews of Europe resettle in Alaska.  Michael Chabon wrote a book, The Yiddish Policemen's Union, about what Alaska would be like if that had happened. It's also a mystery and a lot of fun from a Putlizer prize winner. Trump, of course, will take credit for this idea like he did for getting rid of pennies which already happened in Canada.
