I confess to back pedaling into Trump territory when I wanted to leave discussions about him in the garbage can. My thread on the read-only break room site has 9,600 replies so I thought I'd bring up a new one.
He's not going away.
Haberman's book is out based on interviews. I won't read it, but the excerpts are interesting. Especially what he says about McConnell, a description that's against the Terms of Service here, but I actually don't disagree with. LOL
Quote“At one point, Trump made a candid admission that was as jarring as it was ultimately unsurprising. ‘The question I get asked more than any other question: “If you had it to do again, would you have done it?”’Trump said of running for president. ‘The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.’ … Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

Supper Tuesday nights speech more cohesive read from teleprompter.
Trump recited a familiar list of grievances, insisting that the nation was descending toward chaos under Biden's leadership and raising doubts again about election integrity even as he has swept through the Republican primary contests. "We're a third-world country at our borders, and we're a third-world country at our elections,”
GOP spent millions on the program "Bank Your Vote" to get Republicans voting early, while Trump continues to rail against early voting. Maybe if he encouraged early voting would have an upset this November.
I can't see how he can possibly be on his game when it seems he deliberately chooses to do events largely attended by his fawning sycophants. He trots the same old boring lines out there, but with increasing incoherence, "word salad" exactly. They'll applaud at anything.
I was disappointed that his primary opponents and most of the media gave him a pass for refusing to be part of their debates-- he knows he can be the star of a Town Hall within a few days, so from his standpoint it makes sense. Nobody will put an empty chair on the stage...
He's now taken control of the RNC, which at least nominally was intended to support Republicans with a certain tolerance for differing views. Not anymore. Installing a family member, too. Right out of the dictator playbook. Why alarm people by shaking things up too much at first, when you can slowly suck the life out of these ancillary groups.
Maybe this will help strengthen support for the various rule-of-law Republican offshoot groups like Lincoln Project. I hope so.

QuoteIn an overlooked lawsuit, Donald Trump's lawyers are exhibiting a habit from his White House days: Hunting for anonymous sources.
In transcripts of four depositions obtained by Business Insider, Trump's attorneys had the opportunity to question journalists about a mystery that has vexed them for years: Who are the anonymous consultants who reviewed the Pulitzer Prizes awarded to The New York Times and The Washington Post for their coverage of Trump's connections to Russia?
The depositions were taken last year for a lawsuit Trump brought in December 2022, suing the Pulitzer Prize Board, which administers American journalism's highest honors. He accused the board and its 18 members of defaming him by awarding the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for National Reporting to The Washington Post and The New York Times for their coverage of Russia's interference in the 2016 election and the country's connections to Trump's presidential campaign and administration.
QuoteIn his lawsuit, Trump complained that journalists and the Pulitzer board conspired together as part of a larger "Russia Collusion Hoax," which the former president claimed was "fully debunked." In reality, investigations from Robert Mueller and a US Senate intelligence committee found numerous connections between Russian efforts and the Trump campaign, even as they did not conclude that Trump personally fostered them.
Trump just knows that people believe what is repeated. He needs his lies, not the truth about his lies, repeated. Isn't it crazy that so many conservatives believe that those connections to Russia were just made up?
QuoteDonald Trump on Friday posted a $91.6 million bond to cover the defamation verdict in favor of writer E. Jean Carroll, and began his appeal of the case that arose from his branding her a liar after she accused him of raping her decades ago.
The bond from Federal Insurance Co, part of the insurer Chubb , would cover Carroll's $83.3 million judgment if Trump were to lose his appeal of the Jan. 26 verdict and refuse to pay
His victim can't access that money until he finishes his appeals. I wonder what assets Trump had to put up as collateral for that loan. This is where Trump's history of carrying huge amounts of debt hurt him.
Quote"I don't think it makes any sense,” Bolton argued. "And I think it, really, puts whatever he is told at risk of being disclosed.”
It is customary for major-party candidates to be included in intelligence briefings once they've secured their respective party's nomination, which could make transitioning into the White House easier if they win the presidency.
Trump is transactional. I wonder who he is indebted to in his time of financial strain. Voters should know these things.
QuoteThe presiding judge in the Georgia criminal case against Donald Trump and his allies has thrown out some of the charges against the former president and several of his co-defendants.
The partial dismissal by Georgia Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee leaves most of the sprawling racketeering indictment intact.

What are the odds that this decision is related to why his brother isn't seeking reelection to his House seat?

QuoteAsked who he plans to vote for in the general election, Pence said, "Like most Americans, I'm going to keep my vote to myself."
"I would never vote for Joe Biden," Pence said when asked if he would vote for Biden. "How I vote when that curtain closes, that will be for me."
It is unusual that a failing candidate doesn't endorse the nominee, but it's no surprise given that he pressured Pence to reject the 2020 election. As awful as Pence is as a conservative, he does seem to have some integrity. My guess is that if Trump isn't conservative enough for him when faced with a choice he's voting for Trump.
As a side note, I don't think he's like most Americans. Most of us are pretty open and vocal about who we are voting for, if we vote at all.

My guess is that it wouldn't be safe for him to verbalize that he won't vote for Trump. Most of us don't feel the same sort of political pressure or actual threat that he might experience. I mean, Trump supporters threatened to hang him if he didn't go along with the plan to steal the election for Trump.
Trump granted clemency to Medicare fraudsters before vowing to cut entitlement program abuse
QuoteIn an attempt to clean up comments he made this week about "cutting" entitlement programs, former president Donald Trump has vowed in recent days that he would reduce spending on Social Security and Medicare by targeting waste and fraud in those programs.
Cut through the 2024 election noise. Get The Campaign Moment newsletter.
However, a review of Trump's record shows that, in the closing months of his presidency, he used his clemency powers to help several people convicted in major Medicare fraud cases, including commuting the sentence of a man the Justice Department had described as having "orchestrated one of the largest health care fraud schemes in U.S. history.”
In his last year in office, Trump commuted the sentences of at least five people who collectively filed nearly $1.6 billion in fraudulent claims through Medicare or Medicaid.
I presume when Trump says he is going to cut waste he means he is going to fire the career people who understand the system and replace them with his cronies who can siphon off Medicare funds to their hearts delight.

Imagine what would happen if we could claw back the billions of taxpayer money stolen by fraudsters!
I'm talking about things like predatory lending (student loans), billing fraud (looking at you, Rick Scott), abuse of specific spending programs (both state and federal). You get the gist ...
We could start with investigating fraudulent PPP loans that have been forgiven.
QuoteSaturday's rally was hosted by Buckeye Values PAC, a group backing Moreno's candidacy. But Trump used the stage to deliver a profanity-filled version of his usual rally speech that again painted an apocalyptic picture of the country if Biden wins a second term.
"If I don't get elected, it's going to be a bloodbath for the whole — that's going to be the least of it. It's going to be a bloodbath for the country," he warned, while talking about the impact of offshoring on the country's auto industry and his plans to increase tariffs on foreign-made cars.
QuoteTrump campaign spokesman Steven Cheung said that Trump had clearly been talking about the impact of a second Biden term on the auto industry and broader economy.
Here's the link to the crazy speech for the people who think he was taken out of context while talking about violence and lying and telling confused stories.
