I confess to back pedaling into Trump territory when I wanted to leave discussions about him in the garbage can. My thread on the read-only break room site has 9,600 replies so I thought I'd bring up a new one.
He's not going away.
Haberman's book is out based on interviews. I won't read it, but the excerpts are interesting. Especially what he says about McConnell, a description that's against the Terms of Service here, but I actually don't disagree with. LOL
Quote“At one point, Trump made a candid admission that was as jarring as it was ultimately unsurprising. ‘The question I get asked more than any other question: “If you had it to do again, would you have done it?”’Trump said of running for president. ‘The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.’ … Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

It is hard for me to believe Canadians would give up socialized health care and lovely community centers with swimming and ice rinks in order to enrich billionaires.
Of course, Kevin O'Leary is on Shark Tank and Fox, so he must be some sort of authority.
74% seems low to me considering that not many know what the details of a proposal would be or what the benefits or drawbacks would be. At this stage, I would have thought it'd be high 90's.
Plenty of beautiful community parks and centers, bike and hiking trails, etc where I am. What makes you think those things in Canada would go away?
You asked about this proposal, not to criticize Trump's idea, so you said. But, to be more informed. Then, when I post one successful Canadian businessman thoughts on it you go right to criticizing it without any explanation as to why. Except that the man also appears on Shark Tank.

I do not believe that the majority of Canadians would trade their healthcare for the nebulous promise of saving on taxes and military protection.
You and one Canadian businessman disagree.

Neither O'Leary or I said they would. He only pointed out a few reasons to consider such a proposal I only posted the clip of him doing so.
I thought that number J22 posted did indeed seem low. I guess some are open to the idea. I suppose it depends on who you ask. I've read a poll that Atlantic Canadians are about 90 % opposed. The further west you go it drops even in to the 70's.
But I do agree with the idea that Trump was joking. It would answer a lot of trade problems but would they be one big state? How many Senators would they get? Are those Senators likely to be Republicans?
How much debt would we incur? What about all those immigrants?
It's all just fantasy, just like my fantasy to defect there and become a Canadian.
QuoteA full 82 per cent of respondents said they were opposed to the idea. People in the Atlantic provinces, women and Canadians over the age of 55 were least likely to support it.

I know you are around a lot of Canadians where you live and me as well as I meet a lot of snowbirds and nearly 100% of the time they mention their good healthcare at least once very early on. In fact when they get sick or injured they prefer to be flown home for care rather than stay here. The person who came up with universal healthcare apparently in polls is their most admired citizen.
I would tend to agree with you that if it were a serious consideration, they would look at the options and our healthcare system of paying high deductibles and setting up GoFundMe pages to pay healthcare expenses would be the deal breaker even for those that they say they are open to the idea.
Canada wanted to be loyal to the crown and France, but for hundreds of years we've been practically best friends or siblings. I really wish Trump wouldn't antagonize them. Get them to stop their illegal immigrants and drugs, but be a little more diplomatic and presidential about it.
Trump needs to be telling us how he's going to make groceries affordable and live up to his promises instead of this distraction.

I also think Canadians don't want any part of our country as long as gun violence and our lack of action in controlling it is not seriously addressed.

There's a joke here, "what's an American without a gun an healthcare?". Answer: A Canadian.
To be fair apparently gun violence is on the rise in Canada and a good deal of those guns are smuggled form the US. I'm sure it would be worse if they had a 2nd Amendment.
But also know their rise is minuscule to the tens and thousands of incidents of gun violence here.

My parents live in Alberta Canada. I travel there often. Most people just laugh at Trump calling Trudeau govenor. No one is really worried about Trump taking over Canada. Except the far left radical Canadians that is. Trump is trolling and it's working perfectly. Although some Canadians may feel there would be a benefit to being the 51st state, no one wants that. Canada is a country with a rich history distinct from the US. Besides, the last time the US messed with Canada, Canada burt down the White House. LOL
Canada's Healthcare is not completely free. Canadians pay extremely high taxes. Also the Healthcare isn't that good. With 15 hr ER waites and lengthy waits for specialist and imaging. Even so I do not think many Canadians would swap it out for private health insurance.

Wouldn't it be nice that the person you voted for wasn't laughed at, but was more Presidential and respected somewhat?
What they pay in taxes, we pay in paying premiums, medicare taxes and co-pays and deductibles. I'd rather pay that money in a healthcare/medicare for all tax that assures healthcare for all. Which I would suppose would make for longer wait times with everyone covered. Right now in this country the rich and the poor have nothing to worry about, it's us middle class that is bearing the burden. But that's a rant I've been ranting about for many years.

I did say no one would want to trade the Canadian Healthcare system with the US. So it seems we agree again
It would be nice to have a leader that isn't laughed at. It seems that the majority of Americans do respect him, hence being elected by the people. Nonetheless, many million also do not respect him.
