The Trump Thread

Published

I confess to back pedaling into Trump territory when I wanted to leave discussions about him in the garbage can.  My thread on the read-only break room site has 9,600 replies so I thought I'd bring up a new one.

He's not going away.

Haberman's book is out based on interviews.  I won't read it, but the excerpts are interesting.  Especially what he says about McConnell, a description that's against the Terms of Service here, but I actually don't disagree with.  LOL

Quote

“At one point, Trump made a candid admission that was as jarring as it was ultimately unsurprising. ‘The question I get asked more than any other question: “If you had it to do again, would you have done it?”’Trump said of running for president. ‘The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.’ … Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

Trump is again playing his devotees that that mail in voting is fraudulent in Pennsylvania.  Trump is already claiming "election fraud" based on an "expert" who appeared on Tucker Carlson's show.

How Pa. secures mail ballots, prevents fraud and more

BIGGEST ISSUE with PA mail ballots: ballots are not opened or counted until 7 a.m. on Election Day. County election staff open and count the ballots in front of observers from political parties and campaigns unlike other states that start counting process upon ballot return.  PA republican legislators declined to permit preliminary count which is only released after voting ends on in-person election day.

So don't be surprised when PA vote count not finalized for a few days post November 5th, 2024

Does Trump know that Carlson is a shill for Russian propaganda? Do Trump's voters know? Maybe they don't care.  Russian propaganda has quite a bit in common with GOP talking points in the era of Trump.

On Saturday, at a rally in Wisconsin, Donald Trump said some bizarre and potentially damaging stuff about economic policy. "So what?” you may say; it was, after all, a day ending in "y.” And to be honest, the most vile thing he said at that event wasn't about economics; it was his declaration that his vision or plan for "getting them out" — deporting undocumented immigrants — "will be a bloody story.”

Still, his remarks about how he would use tariffs to preserve the dollar's status as a reserve currency should worry anyone imagining that international economic policy during a second Trump term would be like policy in his first term — a lot of sound and fury signifying not much.

What did Trump say? Summaries of Trump's statements often make them sound more coherent than they are — a process some have decried as sanewashing. So let me hand over the mic to Trump himself and reproduce his remarks verbatim.

Quote

First, he proclaimed his own infallibility: "Trump is always right. I hate to be right. I hate to be right. I'm always right.”

Really? In 2020, Trump predicted a stock market crash if Joe Biden was elected; as of Friday's close, stocks are, in fact, up 40 percent since Biden took office. Now, everyone makes bad predictions; I'm more alarmed by the idea of handing power to a man who believes that he's never wrong.

Which brings us back to Trump. I doubt that he really understands what he's saying about the dollar as a reserve currency, but he's probably conflating government holdings of U.S. debt with the dollar's much wider international role.

In that case, however, what is he proposing? Would he, say, punish Indonesia if some of its businesses invoiced their trade with China in renminbi rather than dollars? Would he punish Colombia if some of its drug lords started hoarding more 100-euro notes than $100 bills?

If these suggestions sound absurd, that's because they are. Trump's bellicose word salad is hard to actually parse, but broadly speaking, any notion that America could use the threat of tariffs to force countries to keep using the dollar — which, again, mainly reflects private decisions — involves more than a bit of megalomania. Our nation has a lot of economic power but not that much.

Trump seems to have an almost childish view of tariffs as a fix all. He maintained the other day that tariffs would take care of childcare concerns of working parents.

Meanwhile, the bot brigade is revving up: non-existent Venezuelan gangs taking over apartment buildings in Colorado and Haitian migrants stealing ducks out of parks and eating citizen's pets in Ohio. (At least they're not eating babies.)

Certainly.

I can't imagine that most people think that the recent busting of the Russian troll farms and Russian funded right wing influencer media company exposed ALL of the foreign efforts.  It really could just be the tip of an iceberg of nefarious intent and propaganda.

And Trump spouted all of these points during the debate which moderators stepped in: not true per conversation with town officials.

Taylor Swift watched the debate, posted now:

Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. If you haven't already, now is a great time to do your research on the issues at hand and the stances these candidates take on the topics that matter to you the most. As a voter, I make sure to watch and read everything I can about their proposed policies and plans for this country.

Recently I was made aware that AI of 'me' falsely endorsing Donald Trump's presidential run was posted to his site. It really conjured up my fears around AI, and the dangers of spreading misinformation. It brought me to the conclusion that I need to be very transparent about my actual plans for this election as a voter. The simplest way to combat misinformation is with the truth.

I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election. I'm voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos. I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman's right to her own body for decades.

I've done my research, and I've made my choice. Your research is all yours to do, and the choice is yours to make. I also want to say, especially to first time voters: Remember that in order to vote, you have to be registered! I also find it's much easier to vote early. I'll link where to register and find early voting dates and info in my story.

It will be interesting to see if the press tries to make it seem like Harris didn't talk enough about policy specifics to counter Trump's agitated rambling.

The "overtaking" of buildings is an exaggeration, but the gangs are not "nonexistent " and they've committed serious crimes here in the Denver area and other places.

The eating people's pets may not be true.  The important thing to know is that there are 1000's new to the small city.
