The Trump Thread

Published

I confess to back pedaling into Trump territory when I wanted to leave discussions about him in the garbage can.  My thread on the read-only break room site has 9,600 replies so I thought I'd bring up a new one.

He's not going away.

Haberman's book is out based on interviews.  I won't read it, but the excerpts are interesting.  Especially what he says about McConnell, a description that's against the Terms of Service here, but I actually don't disagree with.  LOL

Quote

“At one point, Trump made a candid admission that was as jarring as it was ultimately unsurprising. ‘The question I get asked more than any other question: “If you had it to do again, would you have done it?”’Trump said of running for president. ‘The answer is, yeah, I think so. Because here’s the way I look at it. I have so many rich friends and nobody knows who they are.’ … Reflecting on the meaning of having been president of the United States, his first impulse was not to mention public service, or what he felt he’d accomplished, only that it appeared to be a vehicle for fame, and that many experiences were only worth having if someone else envied them.”

Was having a conversation with a friend and he told me Trump ranting about sharks.  So I dug deeper.  Trump who has been praised for not using a teleprompter and being able to carry own a speech spontaneously said this the other day (when his teleprompter was out)

It must be because of M.I.T., my relationship with M.I.T., very smart. I say, 'What would happen if the boat sank from its weight and you're in the boat and you have this tremendously powerful battery, and the battery is now underwater, and there's a shark that's approximately 10 yards over there?" Trump said. "By the way, lot of shark attacks lately. Did you notice that?"

First, heavy boats don't think...think aircraft carrier.

2nd:  "But shark attacks are still considered rare. The Florida Museum, a state natural history museum, puts the odds of being attacked by a shark at 1 in 11.5 million.

Though reports of attacks like last week's may contribute to the perception that such incidents are on the rise, attacks in the U.S. have actually trended down in recent years. And more reports can be expected now because we've entered the time of year when people spend more time in the ocean, raising the chances people and sharks may come in contact."

3rd:  What is his relationship to MIT?  His Uncle was a professor there.  Earlier this year apparently he boasted his uncle was the longest serving professor in the history of MIT (he wasn't but did have a decades long career there).

4th:  What are the odds of a boat sinking with a big electric battery, being electrocuted (because it's now underwater) and then being attacked by a shark.

He was probably trying to discredit electric vehicles or something.

I will admit that the shark thing is weird. Probably one of his dumb jokes.

I would consider this as possible cognitive decline but the association with heavy batteries,  sinking and sharks suggest all these loosely related ideas:  heavy battery - Sinking- water- sharks doesn't support it.

Just another non sensible loosely related and I admit, stupid comment.

Yeah, someone posted the video here.

Unlike Biden, he's out speaking in front of audiences and cameras almost everyday.   Not surprising we get one of these weird rambles now and then.

I dunno, Biden has been out and about recently and he has a pretty demanding day job to boot.

Are you saying that you think that Trump's "weird ramblings" are only occasional? I listen to a good number of Trump's speeches.  He regularly speaks in word salad and demonstrates associative looseness when he's off script, IMV.

On a related note, it's instructive to compare and contrast both men's ability to function under intense pressure. Rather an important consideration in selecting the leader of the most powerful country in the world, I think.

I agree wholeheartedly.  We saw how Trump handled pressure with the pandemic.  Where previous leaders might have found a way to unite the country against a common foe in an election year, Trump could not.  Joe Biden is not fickle or feckless.

I'll sometimes miss a post if I'm working, or if it needs moderators approval before it being posted and I've moved on past it.  My apologies for bringing it up again.

It's understandable and not surprising because it's Trump.  Most candidates on a hectic schedule don't ramble and make things up that don't make sense.

Candidates in close races often have a grueling and hectic schedule the final months.  Most are pretty competent and masters at making speeches.  Romney ramped up his schedule when Obama was closing in.  Ms. Clinton had a grueling schedule in the final months before the primaries against Sanders and then later against Trump.  It comes with the territory.

I don't remember having to deal with one that "freezes" and acts old and feeble and one that has "weird rambles" (lies and makes things up) before.

Fun times.

I agree.  Yes, it does come with the territory.  As does being the POTUS.

You hit the nail on the head in your last paragraph.

Biden's busy, demanding schedule starts today with a DACA  anniversary celebration at 230pm.  He seldom gets his daily briefing before 10am.  Today, it's 345pm.

Then, it's off to a evening campaign event before heading off to his beach house.

Since this is the Trump thread it would be appropriate to compare Biden's schedule with the schedule that his opponent kept while in office.

https://www.axios.com/2019/02/03/donald-trump-private-schedules-leak-executive-time

We learned that the most common type of time scheduled for Trump during his single failed term was "executive time" during which he watched TV and scrolled through the internet.  Beyond that, Mr Trump spent tens of millions of tax payer dollars flying to his properties where tax dollars paid for rooms and food. Trump played golf on average of one round every 6 days of his presidency.  That consumed nearly a year of presidential free time in 4 years.

That was 4 years ago.  That lazy guy is 4 years older now and he couldn't even stay awake during important courtroom events recently.  I don't trust his judgement.

Nice deflection and sarcasm.  I imagine after the G7 conference and his fundraisers, they kept his schedule light.  I have often wondered with as much time politicians spend on the campaign trail, how busy are their real full time jobs.

I suspect that how busy their jobs are depends a bit upon the individual holding the job and how they approach the work. Some executives are very hands on people who live to immerse themselves in the details and complexities of an issue.  There's little evidence that Trump was one of those people.

Do you remember when we learned that Trump didn't really read the daily briefings that were prepared for him and what a challenge that presented to keep him informed of important details? He said that he didn't need them, remember?

https://www.npr.org/2016/12/13/505348507/what-exactly-is-the-presidents-daily-brief-and-why-is-it-important

Trump played lots of golf, watched lots of TV and didn't generally read the PDBs. His lazy approach to the presidency resulted in Trump ranking among the least effective presidents we've ever experienced.
