Just a bit ago the top three threads involved:
1.I have a DWI. Can I be a nurse?
2.I am stupid. Can I be a nurse?
3.If it takes me five times to pass NCLEX, Can I be nurse.
Not much left to add. Says it all.
not to derail the hilariousness of this thread but why is it lately that the "career changers" are getting a bad rap? I've wanted to be a nurse for a long time, but my former employer wasn't schedule friendly - I happened to get laid off (actually they miraculously didn't have a position for me after my FMLA ran out I was a 10 year employee) and it was like I was handed an opportunity...so not all of us are in it for the glory of saying "I'm a nurse" - some of us are finally getting a golden opportunity - I happen to love nursing school, love clinicals and well - poop is what's going to keep me in a job!
My understanding, and experience, is that by law you must be offered "a job" upon return from FMLA. It may not be the same job you had before your leave, but they are not allowed to terminate you, as long as you come back before you exceed the 12 week allotment.
There are a lot of people who jumped on the nursing bandwagon because they thought it would be better than the career they already had. These are the people you see posting here who are disillusioned after less than a year in the profession.
Finally, I never knew there was glory in being a nurse. Hard work, yes, but glory? My biggest disappointment as a new grad was that nursing caps had gone out of vogue. I was one of the few people who thought it was cool to wear them. Since my first job was in psych, it probably wouldn't have worked out that well after all.
i clicked on this thread because the title sounded interesting. what a disapointment. instead of a thread discussing the 'mockery of nursing' it is a thread aimed at humilitating fellow an members. and to think there are moderators on here participating. unbelievable.really, you're no better than a bunch of kids sitting in a cafeteria pointing and laughing while making fun of the kids who aren't cool like you.
to those commenting that this is 'the best thread ever', and 'i'm laughing so hard i have pop coming out my nose' grow up.... this thread has been done before. it wasn't funny then and it isn't funny now, this thread is mean, unprofessional and very immature.
what's most disapointing is that there are members commenting on this thread whose opinions i usually respect.
have you never had a day when you just really wanted to vent? a day when you swear if you get asked one more dumb question (and yes, there really are dumb questions, contrary to the popular saying) you'll scream? many of the people here are just voicing their frustration at those kinds of questions, and having just that kind of day.
i'd suggest coming back to this thread on another day, another time, when maybe you can view it differently. what a difference a day makes

thank you for perfectly illustrating my biggest pet peeve. thankfully, i have gotten over my catholic guilt complex from childhood, and i intend to continue to participate and laugh at this thread. it's better than therapy!

I was over 12 weeks - and it was fairly salary driven - having been there for 10 years and being an assistant supervisor they were paying me a salary that would have paid for 2 newbie employees...
as for the "glory" comment - perhaps I misspoke as I was trying to find the right word...I guess I meant the whole "I'll get my RN but I want to be a CRNA" type of post...I just want to do bedside care (OB is my real interest but if med/surg gets me in the door so be it) and I have no desire to manage anyone nor go for the advanced degree (unless its to get my masters to teach)...
My all time favorite..."OMG when I was in college a few years ago all I did was get drunk and party while that boring old Suz was sitting in the dorm studying and learning stuff. Now that I'm back doing my nursing pre-reqs those mean people from the college want to calculate my GPA using the grades I got during my party days! They need to change all the rules for me because they suck and they are boring! So what if other people were actually studying because they were not as cool or as fun as I was. Aren't they mean! Agree with me!"

Well, yeah, if you exceed the 12 week limit, you're pretty much SOL.
