To me he's the grandfather of the type of rhetoric we hear all the time now. Like the article below states he laid the foundation for "Trumpism"
I hope his passing was peaceful and pain and my condolences to those that loved him.

I am not sure Tweety. Words can be very painful and he attacked and denigrated a lot of people! He fomented a lot of the extremists views with blatant lies and he was a huge hypocrite!
This guy provided the fodder for paranoid people to reinforce their beliefs. Just look at what the lie about the election cost? 5 dead so far. Lies have consequences and too many right wing nutjobs are deliberately killing their own supporters with their lies. No masks, social distancing. Limbaugh was promoting this as well! AND it's all done for profit!
Just because someone dies, doesn't erase the harm he's done. And, he's done a lot of harm to this country!
He's the forerunner of Alex Jones and the likes of Hannity, Carlson etc. They deliberately dispense lies and conspiracies irresponsible to the harm and uncaring about the effects.
I wouldn't wish Hitler well and I honestly don't wish Limbaugh well. He went after women, LGBTQ, minorities and liberals. He knew exactly what he was doing!
I wouldn't hesitate to say that he has blood on his hands and is definitely responsible for many deaths indirectly!

I meant to say that I hoped his passing was peaceful and pain free (I left out the word free). That's just the human nurse in me. That doesn't erase anything he did in life. I really loathed him and his type.
A lot of his followers, like those that follow Trump, somehow are able to filter through the lies, misinformation and rhetoric and think "well underneath it all he's right about some things if you listen to him". That's not how I operate. I can't filter out and dismiss hateful rhetoric to find something I agree with.
Also, I don't think he was stupid. I think for the most part his broadcasts were relatively benign but every now and then he'd say something just for the attention, ratings and to keep himself in the limelight. Ann Coulter does this too, especially when she has a book release. Any publicity is good.
At least he regretted making fun of gay people dying of AIDS saying “most regretful things I’ve ever done” because it was “making fun of people who were dying long, painful and excruciating deaths.”
Hopefully before the end of his life he had time to reflect on other hateful things he has said.

I'm not going to say he was never offensive. The Chelsea Clinton WH dog joke was wrong.
But, many many things were presented by Media Matters and others out of context, or flat out inaccurate. Such as Barrack the Magic Negro that someone above mentioned. Although he played it and spoke of it, that wasnt even his creation, nor was it racist.
I couldn't stand him when I was in college. I used to. I used to vote Democrat, down the line. But as I grew up and saw the world through my more experienced eyes, he made much more sense. RIP, Rush.

The point is not that Limbaugh never made a valid conservative point. As they say, even a stopped clock is right twice a day.
Nor do I consider him the grandfather of Trumpism. That dishonor goes to Spiro Agnew, Ronald Reagan and the architects of the Republicans’ southern strategy. For that matter, white supremacy in America goes all the way back to the discovery of the New World and European colonialism. Limbaugh certainly didn’t invent any of that.
What Limbaugh, Fox News, Glen Beck, et. al., did was to flood the electorate with hateful divisive rhetoric demonizing the “other” purely for their own profit. The Republican Party gleefully co-opted these self-serving hacks, along with evangelical Christians (remember the “silent majority”?) to fulfill their fantasy of a permanent Republican majority. It didn’t take long for the rhetoric to devolve into an arms race of crazy as Republican candidates won primary elections by being nastier and crazier than their opponents. That is Limbaugh’s legacy.
This is what I wasn't sure about. I wouldn't be this nice. I worked pediatric oncology for a brief period and couldn't cope any longer with people of faith saying "it's God's will" re the innocent kids, as an explanation of what was happening.
I am a polite, civilized person, but I have friends that are Hispanics, Black, Jewish and of the LGBTQ persuasion AND also friends who are republicans who listened to Limbaugh and repeated his trash in my presence. They sided with him re Kavanagh and Trump's women's accusations AND I have also listened to his show. He should have been charged and convicted for incitement and put away to rot in jail!
Personally, I wish none of those things for him and to be honest, the exact opposite. The same applies to Alex Jones and the like. They are dangerous people who choose to live outside the rules of civilization and I see no difference between them and the people who propagate jihads!
Just as we have to consider the implications of our words in this forum because of the impact and our small personal world, to culture the right people around us, EVEN though we have free speech, we DON'T!

I listened to him often when I had long commutes. He was a vile and awful man who made arguments so specious anyone could drive a truck through them. He was a guy who just sucked air someone else deserved more. I deserved to become a drug addict after denigrating others with the same problem. He was just another carney barker from Missouri who somehow latched onto a neurolinguistic style that attraced non-thinkers. I can't imagine that Romney, George Will and other true conservatives are mourning his demise since he sullied the Republican label.

And that's the thing I don't get about republicans, I have never met a Democrat or a Liberal who embraces the caricature they paint.
I don't know of a single person who doesn't want to pay less taxes, have smaller optimized but EFFECTIVE Govt, want free speech and trade, respect for our constitutional rights, no wars, but because we DIFFER on disrespecting the rights of women, minorities, LGBTQ and A DEMOCRATIC PROCESS IN ELECTIONS, we are the enemy!
They never want Democracy which GIVES THEM THE RIGHTS THEY SO LOVE, but choose Facism and Authoritarianism, which would enslave them and TAKE AWAY THOSE RIGHTS!
How do possibly reach them with the limited time we have AND WHAT is the appeal to so many of the people they always disenfranchised?
This article reminds me of the story of the golden calf from the Bible. So-called Christians are willing to supplant their Lord with a fake flimflam man. How can they worship someone can't even name his favorite Bible verse and professes never needing to ask God for forgiveness.
