I think Senator McConnell MAY have planned his excuse on January 9th when he wrote this in a letter to GOP Senators, "If the House votes to follow through with articles of impeachment against the president before Jan. 19 -- the day before Biden's inauguration -- the Senate will receive a message indicating that the House impeached the president while the Senate is in recess."
All 100 senators would have to agree to conduct "any business of any kind" during the two pro-forma sessions to begin assessing articles of impeachment before the next regular session on Jan. 19, the letter states.
He also wrote, ""Assuming such unanimous consent is not given, the following would take place under the Senate Impeachment Rules when the Senate resumes regular session on January 19," McConnell wrote.
Therefore he knew the hearings could NOT take place before Mr. Trump was no longer President. IF so he was cunningly dishonest.

Oh, he's cunningly something all right!

I would wager however, that he's been involved in many corrupt dealings based on the amount of business he's sent to his state using his position. A proper bit of scrutiny to his dealings will reveal it. He's really not had any real challengers except possibly for a brief period this last time. And he's definitely had some shady deals re his wife's business.
His connections save him.
This might seem out of context, but this is how I view the world!
Chernobyl! Less people died at Chernobyl (under 500) than the current Covid pandemic but the effects of Chernobyl is still ongoing,
The entire Soviet apparatus is a parallel to the republican party! Just like every corporate structure is a reflection of the people at the top, Chernobyl occurred because of sycophantic behaviors to a corrupt, incompetent regime.
The last 4 years are a direct reflection of the Trump administration! When you appoint a CEO(President) especially the way the American political system is designed, you had better make sure that they aren't ethically and morally challenged! Trump's disassembling of the govt's apparatus led directly to most of the problems.
This last failure to impeach him, just as it led to the republicans losing all three measures of control, Presidency, Senate and Congress is the exact template of what's going to happen to the republican party! He is single handedly going to destroy them!
This is a summary of what happened at Chernobyl causing the disaster!
*The poor quality of operating procedures and instructions, and their conflicting character, put a heavy burden on the operating crew, including the chief engineer. The accident can be said to have flowed from a deficient safety culture, not only at the Chernobyl plant, but throughout the Soviet design, operating and regulatory organizations for a nuclear power that existed at that time."[4]:24
The plant was not designed to safety standards in effect and incorporated unsafe features
"Inadequate safety analysis" was performed[4]
There was "insufficient attention to independent safety review"[4]
"Operating procedures not founded satisfactorily in safety analysis"[4]
Safety information not adequately and effectively communicated between operators, and between operators and designers
The operators did not adequately understand safety aspects of the plant
Operators did not sufficiently respect formal requirements of operational and test procedures
The regulatory regime was insufficient to effectively counter pressures for production
There was a "general lack of safety culture in nuclear matters at the national level as well as locally"[4]
*Substitute any of the above with the Trump era cultural structure of operating!

This is Trump's heaping list of legal problems post-impeachment
Georgia election results and his NY Business dealings may be his downfall along with the Capital insurrection going forward.

Which is why I used Chernobyl as an allegory!
Chernobyl was all about covering up and disinformation and the fallout will be there for a very long time.
Trump's policies and impact will also be there for a very long time re the republicans. Just think of the many people who fell for his nonsense re masks and social distancing!
Covid survivors will be suffering from the complications, possibly all their lives. Try imagining just that single event and the ensuing impact to children, parents, family members, friends, from those that died.
How has Covid impacted present and future... education, commerce, business practices etc? All because of disinformation and cover up!
Now consider all the other decisions he's made, environmental, foreign policy, modification of how news is obtained and consumed etc?
Think of all the politicians he's now influenced and emboldened to adopt his methods and the republican supporters needs re how those politicians will behave?
He's far worse than Chernobyl, but it was the only thing that I could think of that might paint the right picture.

I think that you are correct. Republicans must be banking upon the American people not learning the truth about what Trump represents. Everyone who paid attention to the events of the past 4 years knows that Trump is guilty of assembling that mob and then sending it to the capitol. He told us repeatedly what his intentions included in a pattern of not very subtle language and behavior for many months. Now the GOP must engage in an ongoing attempt to muddy any and all investigation with their toxic politics. The politics where armed intimidation and occupation of government buildings to undo government function is excused away worth semantic and twisted arguments of technicality.
Will Trump inspire his devotees to terrorize state officials who wouldn't break laws to give him the presidency? Will Trump motivate others to intimidate candidates for national office that have angered or offended him?

It still gives me a fright thinking about the imagery and the implications!
Ignorance really is bliss based on the lackluster reactions of some people as to the implications.
My God, democracy was at stake!
Imagine us going down the route of Russia, Turkey, Hungary, Venezuela, Cuba etc with those comparable dictatorships. We seriously need more international news in this country!

As I've said for much too long...buckle up.
Despots don't concede and retire quietly to the seaside after an election loss.
It appears that a powerful segment of our Congress and an armed and angry segment of our population are ready and willing to repeat history. I'm thinking of rereading this book.
Revisiting The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich
From the article:
QuoteIndeed, the foremost object lesson from rereading Shirer’s remarkable work 50 years on might be that the glorification of suicidal martyrdom, its inseparability from delusion and defeat, blinds its adherents to anything but murderous faith—and leads to little more than the slaughter of innocents.
And, yes, perhaps one corollary that almost need not be spelled out: There is danger in giving up our sense of selfhood for the illusory unity of a frenzied mass movement, of devolving from human to herd for some homicidal abstraction. It is a problem we can never be reminded of enough, and for this we will always owe William Shirer a debt of gratitude.

Revisiting The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich
From the article:
I haven't read but I just put it on the to do list.
I can't remember who said this, but it went something like this " A dictator doesn't need supporters, he wants followers"
I could have gotten that wrong but that's the gist of it.

Indeed. The country was aware that the GOP is cowed by Trump. This was the ultimate proof.
McQonnell's 20 minutes of response is hard to stomach. He starts it off by telling everyone that Trump did exactly what the House Managers proved and then moves on to explaining his excuse for acquittal in the face of insurmountable evidence that guilty was the correct vote. I stopped listening. His motives are suspect.
